See New York City in 1968 through the lens of photographer Katrina Thomas with “Streets in Play." Curated from the NYC Parks Photo Archive collection, the exhibition features more than 40 of Thomas’ photographs of “Playstreets” or residential blocks closed to traffic and equipped with recreational and cultural activities. With dynamic black-and-white images that document carless streets and children engaged in inventive and self-directed forms of play, the 1968 images speak to present-day questions of whom and what purposes city streets might serve.

Katrina Thomas (1927-2018) was hired to document Mayor Lindsay’s 1968 Task Force initiatives and later donated those photographs to NYC Parks. Her images were commissioned to use for publicity, fundraising appeals, and official reports, and intended to offer visual proof that the city was compensating for a lack of investment in low-income, racially segregated neighborhoods. But Thomas’ exceptional eye transcended the task. Her photographs represent one of the most complicated yet revealing collections of imagery in the Photo Archives—shaped by the tension between the demands of a commissioned project and Thomas’ personal perspective.

Curated by Rebekah Burgess, NYC Parks Photo Archivist, and Mariana Mogilevich, historian of architecture and urbanism and Editor in Chief, Urban Omnibus.

Please note: Mask-wearing is required to enter the Arsenal Gallery, and guests are required to sign in. Groups of five or more people can call (212) 360-8114 or email artandantiquities@parks.nyc.gov to pre-register. The gallery is closed on federal holidays.

Legendary label VP Records has been a bastion of Jamaican music in New York City since its founding in 1977. This Central Park party showcases the intersection of dancehall and hip-hop in the 1990s—a sweet spot for the Jamaican artist Wayne Wonder, whose honeyed vocals and talent for interpretation helped establish him as a hitmaker with songs for both the lovers and the streets since the late 80s. He made his name covering the work of American artists including Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” PM Dawn’s “Die Without You” and En Vogue’s “Hold On,” but branched out to recording original works in the early 90s. He’s worked with such producers as King Tubby, Dave Kelly, Steve “Lenky” Marsden, Bobby Digital, Sly and Robbie, and even No Doubt’s Tony Kanal, who produced his cover of the Thompson Twins’ “Hold Me Now” for the soundtrack of the 2004 Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore rom-com 50 First Dates.

Programming will kick off at 6:00PM with DJ and a processional.

“Gregory Stephen Ionman Tate (1957-2021), was an amazing son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, nephew, cousin – a family man in the deepest African sense. A proud Harlem resident, he was also an invaluable friend, a generous mentor to many, and a gentle giant of Black radical thought and creativity. Please join us for this major celebration of Greg’s life and works.”
– The Tate Family

Burnt Sugar/Danz was founded in 2002 by writer/musician/conductor Greg Tate and dancer/choreographer/filmmaker Gabri Christa as a radical melding of Christa’s profound relationship to movement and Tate’s equally rigorous approach to music. The collaboration they formed was rooted in the work of Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber, the sprawling band of virtuosos that Tate founded and co-led – a multi-generational ensemble inspired by Butch Morris’ CONDUCTION system for improvising orchestras. Burnt Sugar/Danz, which made its debut at SummerStage in Central Park that same year, draws upon the cream of the crop in New York City’s music, choreographic, and dance-performance talent to create innovative, never-before-seen works, live, and in real time. Adopting Morris’ baton gestures and hand-sign vocabulary to dance, Burnt Sugar/Danz presents an alchemical blend of spontaneously composed music and choreography. This 20th-anniversary celebration, held in tribute to Tate, includes guest appearances by Harriet Tubman, the avant power trio known for its deep fusion of soul, rock, and jazz; the Resistance Revival Chorus, a collective of more than 60 women and non-binary singers; the Bardo Steppers, a deep-funk second-line procession of drums and horns led by bassist Melvin Gibbs; and DJ Reborn, a trailblazing international DJ, sound collage artist, and arts educator, also the resident DJ for Ms. Lauryn Hill’s world tour and the founder of DJs for Justice.

This performance by Resistance Revival Chorus for SummerStage is supported by the Omomuki Foundation.

For over 20 years The Decemberists have been one of the most original, daring, and thrilling American rock bands. Founded in the year 2000 when singer, songwriter, and guitarist Colin Meloy moved from Montana to Portland, Oregon and met bassist Nate Query, keyboardist Jenny Conlee, and guitarist Chris Funk, The Decemberists’ distinctive brand of hyperliterate folk-rock set them apart from the start with the release of their debut EP 5 Songs in 2001. After making their full-length debut with Castaways and Cutouts in 2002, the band signed with Kill Rock Stars for the release of the acclaimed albums Her Majesty the Decemberists (2003) and Picaresque (2005), which was produced by Chris Walla. The 2004 EP The Tain – an 18-minute single-track epic – made the band’s grand creative ambitions clear.

Wake Up, Daisy! tells the story of Daisy, a lively little girl living in the heart of New York City in an apartment overlooking Central Park. At Daisy’s much-anticipated birthday party, she encounters three special guests, known as her “Squad-parents”, from Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx who grant her the gifts of courage, knowledge, and a second chance. When an unwelcome guest shows up and casts a curse on her, Daisy’s life is forever changed. But through the support of her friends and an adventure throughout the city, Daisy’s strong self-determination and vivid imagination may be all she needs to break the curse.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s (HSDC) 14-member troupe is one of the few contemporary repertory companies to continually tour in the U.S. and abroad. After celebrating National Dance Day in 2020 with SummerStage Anywhere, HSDC brings their company to New York City, live and in-person. They’ll perform highlights from Season 44: RE/CHARGE, a work that acknowledges the experiences of the past two years and forges ahead. Founded in 1977 by Lou Conte and now in its 44th year, the company is led by Artistic Director Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell, a former dancer in the company.

Produced by The Bowery Presents

Over two decades have passed since Animal Collective accidentally began to reimagine the sound and image of what’s easiest here to call indie rock. From the start, they turned the ultimately rare trick of tucking inscrutable experiments into songs so infectious they became generational standards, empowering a new permissibility within a sometimes-stodgy scene. They helped make the world safe for The Grateful Dead and tie-dye, or indie rock open to the Gamelan and Juju. Influences, they implicitly insisted, matter less than the music and spirit they inspire. Such paradigm-bending lessons are now simply part of the paradigm, philosophical cornerstones of modern music. But Animal Collective have never sat still, even on the cornerstones they helped create.

Time Skiffs, the quartet’s first studio album in more than half a decade, feels like listening in on a conversation among four old friends, just as it felt during their inchoate early days or their Strawberry Jam heyday. These nine songs are love letters, distress signals, en plein air observations, and relaxation hymns, the collected transmissions of four people who have grown into relationships and parenthood and adult worry. But they are rendered with Animal Collective’s singular sense of exploratory wonder, same as they ever were. There are harmonies so rich you want to skydive through their shared air, textures so fascinating you want to decode their sorcery, rhythms so intricate you want to untangle their sources. Here is Animal Collective past 20, still in search of what’s next.

It has been easy in these last two years to be more anxious than ever, to give yourself over to the sense that here we are at the end of days, every day. There are traces of that on Time Skiffs, moments of worry about the future we’re creating in the present or consternation with the moments we face now. There is sadness, turmoil, mourning. But there is mostly an undeniable joie de vivre to Time Skiffs, an excitement with love and life and nature and (sometimes) people. There are extended stargazing sessions, discursive country drives, contented creative nights, long-distance phone calls. There is gratitude and acceptance and exhilaration. “It’s really new every day,” goes one line that sticks out not as some overwrought thesis but as a genuine realization, an epiphany in real time. That is the prevailing sense of Time Skiffs—that, at our absolute best, we can be ever new, always in awe of what is yet to come.

Despite the protracted gestation, Time Skiffs is shorter than most Animal Collective records. But as it ends, you long to linger for a while longer, to coexist with the band in this full state of being and feeling. That is perhaps the real feat of Time Skiffs, made by a band whose songs seemed so audacious and new that their emotional cores could sometimes be overlooked. Here is the heart of Animal Collective.

Avey Tare has said that, for him, hearing music has always been a way to be transported, to be whisked away to another time for three or seven or ten minutes at a time. These nine songs, then, are now your own Time Skiffs, your vehicles for traveling to the wilds of Western North Carolina or a sunset surrounded by seagulls or a New Orleans night making music with your friends or any other moment, however real or imagined, that floats into your mind. For these 47 minutes, you feel like you belong somewhere else, like you’ve returned to a place that feels both familiar and foreign, where reality is bent just enough to suggest some beautiful new horizon. Enjoy the trip to whenever and wherever these time skiffs may take you.

After opening the SummerStage season in 2021, the renowned jazz ensemble returns with its critically-acclaimed director to conclude this year’s free season. Director Wynton Marsalis’s name looms large in the world of jazz, and for good reason— the Grammy-winning trumpeter, composer, and bandleader has helped shepherd the cultural institution of jazz into a new millennium. Under his direction, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra performs a vast repertoire: from rare historic compositions to Jazz at Lincoln Center-commissioned works, including compositions and arrangements by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Charles Mingus, and many others. Since the orchestra’s founding in 1988, the group’s performances have been leaving its global audiences inspired and uplifted with the full vigor, vision, and depth of America’s music. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis’s vast, innovative body of original work over the past decade demonstrates the orchestra composers’ and arrangers’ thematic ambitions, distinctive musical personalities, and unprecedented range.

<![CDATA[Streets In Play: Katrina Thomas, NYC Summer 1968]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2022/09/02/streets-in-play-katrina-thomas-nyc-summer-1968 http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2022/09/02/streets-in-play-katrina-thomas-nyc-summer-1968 Date: September 2, 2022

Presented by MeanRed Productions

Since the mid-2000s, Lupe Fiasco has been one of hip-hop’s most intelligent and enigmatic artists. A Grammy winner, Henry Crown Fellow, and visiting MIT professor, Lupe Fiasco’s complex narratives and creative metaphors are rare examples of commercially successful and critically acclaimed artistry. Initially rising to fame with 2006’s ‘Food & liquor’, the following year’s ‘The Cool’ cemented Lupe Fiasco as an international star. Led by his first top ten single ‘Superstar’, ‘The Cool’ received a gold certification and four Grammy nominations. Since ‘The Cool’, Lupe Fiasco has released several albums, including the chart-topping ‘Lasers’ (2011), with 2022’s ‘Drill Music in Zion’ his latest. On September 7, join Lupe Fiasco as MeanRed welcomes the Chicago-rapper to New York’s Capital One City Parks Foundation Summerstage in celebration of 15 years of ‘The Cool.’

Presented by MeanRed Productions

One of hip-hop’s most unapologetic artists, Azealia Banks’ house-infused sound and profane lyrics have garnered her respect and controversy in equal measure. A prodigious wordsmith and online lighting rod, Azealia Banks has been at the forefront of modern culture since her 2011 breakthrough single, ‘212’. Though making music since through humble internet beginnings and a stint with XL Recordings, it was the filth-pop masterpiece and her subsequent studio album ‘Broke With Expensive Taste’ where things really took off. That album cracked Billboard’s Hip Hop/R&B chart’s top five and kept her name on the tip of everyone’s tongue across the industry, ultimately collaborating with names like Pharrell Williams, M.I.A and Paul Oakenfold. On September 8, MeanRed welcomes this one-of-a-kind artist to a hometown SummerStage event that is sure to be the talk of the late summer.

In Association with World Music Institute

With a 36-year curatorial presence in NYC, World Music Institute is mainly known for presenting traditional and contemporary music from around the world. However, in the early years, the programming included a series rooted in the NYC jazz and improvised music scene, ‘Improvisations’. This series brought together musicians from various backgrounds and cultures, many who had never performed together before, and gave them an opportunity to improvise and collaborate.

A core member of many of these dates was drummer, percussionist, and often Acting Music Director Adam Rudolph, who has been hailed as “a pioneer in world music” by The New York Times and “a master percussionist” by Musician Magazine. Rudolph performed on over a dozen of these ‘Improvisations’ shows, many of which led to life-long musical relationships including with Yusef Lateef, Hassan Hakmoun, and Don Cherry, among others. Adam’s later projects, ‘Moving Pictures’ and ‘Go: Organic Orchestra’ (featured at this event) were partly inspired by the unique Improvisation collaborations that he experienced at these WMI shows. Adam Rudolph reboots the ‘Improvisations’ series with an impressive lineup of musicians from many different backgrounds and musical influences at SummerStage.

Produced by The Bowery Presents

On their earthy, jubilant new album, the Columbus, Ohio, band Caamp examine those in-between days that make up a life—not the best or most eventful days, certainly not the worst or most tragic, but those full of small pleasures and forgotten disappointments. Taylor Meier, the group’s singer and primary songwriter, came up with the phrase Lavender Days to describe them—a phrase that struck him out of the blue, “like a coconut out of the sky,” he says with a laugh. Why lavender? “It’s nostalgic. It can remind you of your grandmother’s perfume or maybe the air freshener in your mom’s car. It can summon up all of these incredible memories and transport you to those in-between days, which I think everybody remembers with more clarity than the big events.”

Caamp have been writing and singing about those lavender days—in tender love songs tinged with melancholy and determination—ever since Meier played his first notes with bandmate Evan Westfall more than a decade ago. They met as students at Ohio University in Athens, playing local coffeehouses and growing more committed to this extracurricular project. With the addition of Matt Vinson on bass and Joseph Kavalec on keyboards, they built up a grassroots following well beyond the Buckeye State based on the inventiveness of Meier’s songwriting, the exuberance of their live performances, and their tireless dedication to touring as much as possible.

Produced by The Bowery Presents

Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s first recordings were made by founding members Ela Melo and Darrick “Bozzy” Keller in an Appalachian State University dorm room; the North Carolina group has since expanded into a five-piece alt-rock band with a strong hip-hop and R&B influence. Their major label debut How To: Friend, Love, Freefall draws on the learning experiences of life and love, including Melo’s own coming out to his bandmates. The subsequent tour culminated in a coronation of sorts at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater and three consecutive gigs in Athens, GA—chronicled on their 2021 live album, Live From Athens Georgia.
