And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water.

Exercising with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestow health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

The Bronx is both a place and a collection of metaphors, a peninsula attached to the mainland in a city of islands. In many ways, it is defined by its diversities—social, demographic, geographic and temporal. Hospitals, museums, universities, formal gardens, beaches, parks, and historical sites are prominent features of the landscape. Massive public housing developments, neighborhoods of six-story apartment buildings and private homes, and bucolic landscapes surrounding long-standing estates can be found within the borders of the Bronx.

The photographers represented in this exhibit are connected to the Bronx by birth, residency, work, or affinity. Each has a unique history, a particular point of view, and an evolving personal story. Who we are as individuals and as a group is represented in this exhibit. We are creating a photographic archive of the Bronx. The Bronx Photographers Collaborative hopes these images speak to, inform, provoke, and inspire you to join us in documenting, celebrating, and advocating for the borough that means so much to us and has contributed so much to who we are.

The Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. Since then, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin.

Join us to explore this incredible natural resource in the heart of NYC.

Honoring our roots means remembering how our ancestors healed themselves and acknowledging their gifts through medicine-making. Using plants and flowers directly from Borikén (Puerto Rico), we will make alcoholado, a medicinal rubbing alcohol (or liniment) used to heal a number of spiritual and physical ailments such as muscular pain, headaches, insect bites, melancholy and emotional trauma. To learn more about Casitas Wisdom, please visit casitaswisdom.org.

Facilitated by Myrna Cabán Lezcano, Sacred Vibes Apothecary and Casitas Wisdom; and GreenThumb

Become a Volunteer
The Village Community Boathouse, based on Pier 40 in Hudson River Park, seeks qualified volunteers to help with its satellite community rowing program in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Volunteers need to be physically fit and able to lift boats on and off dollies, and willing to stand in shallow water to help load and unload boats. Some experience paddling (and, especially, rowing) small boats is desirable. The program runs summer Saturdays from noon to 4:00 p.m. with setup beginning at 11:30 a.m. and cleanup concluding at 4:30 p.m..

Email the Village Community Boathouse at info@vcb.nyc for more info or to sign up.

The Village Community Boathouse offers free public rowing in traditional wooden rowboats every summer Saturday in Prospect Park. Rowing is on a first-come, first-served basis. Boats launch from the ramp on Well House Drive at the northwetcorner of the lake. All rowers must sign waivers and don life vests; minors must be accompanied by a parent.

Roughly translated, Taiko means "big drums" - and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings: big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This is an introduction overview to Oregon State University's (OSU) "Introduction to Permaculture Design", a free online long distance learning college course. After this workshop you will be fully familiarized with the fundamental concepts and have hands on practice before taking the full introduction curriculum online. We will provide all study and learning materials to prepare you for OSU's Course taught by Andrew Millison.

In this introduction we will explain what defines permaculture designs basics, including its ethics based philosophies and principles, and how permaculture uses nature as a guide to learn from and inform its decision making matrix.

After the morning class, we will rework Genesis into its transition period towards permaculture by:

  • Addressing its needs
  • Developing soil systems
  • Different composting practices
  • Water harvesting and irrigation
  • Bio-remediation while applying permaculture principles to each task in the garden on an ongoing basis each week and throughout the year

Please pack a lunch if you wish or a bodega and a supermarket are nearby.

Catch-and-release fishing is a great way to get outdoors and discover nature just a few blocks from home. Our experienced Urban Park Rangers teach the ethics of fishing and the ecology of our waterways on every fishing program.

You can try to hook a pumpkinseed sunfish, carp, or chain pickerel. Whether you chose to grab a simple bamboo pole at a quiet lake or join more advanced saltwater programs, we have a program that fits your skill level.

Participation is first come, first served. This program is recommended for ages 8 years and older.
