Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their workouts, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Saturday morning walks begin at 8:30 a.m.

Green Girls Afterschool is an environmental science club that will engage middle school girls throughout the school year in fun-filled online adventures about New York City’s parks and waterways, encouraging them to realize their potential to create change within the natural environment. Through hands-on activities and the stimulating concepts of virtual field exploration, technology, advocacy and project-based science, Green Girls develop an understanding of natural ecosystems in NYC’s parks, learn about future careers in the sciences and understand their own power to advocate for the environment and their parks.

This year, because of the pandemic related changes, Green Girls will have a particular opportunity to focus on how climate change is affecting our city and our future. Students will learn about the history of climate action and how young people have advocated for the environment. The Green Girls will take part in this advocacy as a group.

The program is available online in fall 2020 from October 5th - December 17th.

If you have any questions or would like to register your child via phone please contact Sam Schwartz at (212) 360-2746 or sschwartz@CityParksFoundation.org. Applicants will be notified of acceptance into the program.

Harvest season is upon us, and we’re sure to start seeing the beautiful decorations and crafts that are made from nature that always remind us of fall. You can even create some yourself, like the quintessential Corn Husk Doll, and we’ll show you how! During this Autumnal craft program, you will learn some of their history and symbolism of the Corn Husk Dolls - who made them, when, why, and how?

You will take part in a socially-distanced craft activity to create your very own Corn Husk Doll, with the live instruction of an Environmental Educator. All materials will be provided, and you can take your doll with you to decorate your home. This program will take place outdoors. Best for ages 6+.

Gloria Gaynor’s legendary career spans the past 40 years never losing momentum. She has achieved global stardom and musical recognition with hit songs in the charts in all five decades. Gloria has channeled her fame and recognition into support for several charities, donating not only her money but also her time and talent. She changed the lyrics to her world-renowned song and leant her time to a corresponding music video used by the Miami Children’s Hospital to raise awareness and funds for their lifesaving efforts. Never one to rest, Gloria recently earned a bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences to aid in her work with charities and organizations helping at-risk youths and their families.

Gloria continues to tirelessly tour the world performing at concerts in the USA, Europe, South America, and beyond each year. She was a presenter at the 2015 GRAMMY Awards® and the headliner at the 2015 “Official GRAMMY® Celebration.” The CCU’s Women in Leadership Conference honored Gloria in early 2015 with their “Celebration of Inspiring Women” Award for her philanthropic and leadership achievements and contributions. On May 16th, 2015 Dowling College presented Gloria with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Music.

Gloria was also honored by the Library of Congress on May 6, 2017 after having her recording of her global anthem, “I Will Survive,” inducted in the library’s collection of recordings with American historical & cultural significance in 2016. She was part of an “In Conversation” with fellow survivor, Robin Roberts from “Good Morning America,” in the Coolidge Theater in Washington, DC. And later that same day, Gloria will delivered a concert to end all concerts in the Thomas Jefferson Building’s Great Hall.

When not focusing on her several charitable endeavors, Gloria continues to write and record new music. Her recent work in Nashville with the GRAMMY Award® winning team of Christopher Stevens (TobyMac, Mandisa, Jason Aldean), F. Reid Shippen (Dierks Bentley, Lady Antebellum, Keith Urban), Bryan Fowler, Shannon Sanders, and Drew Ramsey as well as Yolanda Adams, Bart Millard (MercyMe), Mike Farris, and Jason Crabb has delivered her new album, “TESTIMONY.” Her new roots gospel album debuted in the Top 5 of the BILLBOARD Top Gospel Albums Chart, the Top 3 on the iTunes Gospel Chart and the Top 20 on the Amazon Overall Album Chart. The album has received rave reviews from Rolling Stone, Billboard, The Herald-Standard, CBS Sunday Morning, The TODAY Show and more! “TESTIMONY,” also received two GRAMMY® nominations for Best Roots Gospel Album and for Best Gospel Performance / Song for Gloria’s duet with Yolanda Adams on the song, “Talkin’ ‘Bout Jesus.” And Gloria took home the Best Roots Gospel GRAMMY® at the 2020 Award Ceremony. Gloria also headlined the 2020 GRAMMY® Celebration.

Conflict is natural, and can happen even in the most well-organized garden group or with the best of friends. How can we hold space for and resolve conflict within our groups? In these monthly sessions, mediators Skye Roper-Moses and Michelle Jackson will facilitate discussion circles for community gardeners to bring their challenges to the group and collectively generate solutions. The facilitators will model skills for holding space that gardeners can bring back to their own groups to begin to develop a practice for addressing and transforming conflict in the garden.

Please RSVP to receive the link to join the webinar.

How this series works:

This participatory virtual series begins with a one-hour orientation on September 9, from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., that we ask everyone to attend. After orientation, there will be three two-hour monthly sessions (dates: 9/23, 10/21, 11/18). You can attend one, two, or all three of these sessions.

Please attend the one-hour orientation on September 9, where you will meet the facilitators, suggest topics for exploration, and learn more about the sessions’ format. Please come to the orientation with ideas and specific issues that you would like to troubleshoot.

This webinar will be interactive and we encourage everyone's participation. We will not be recording.

Join GreenThumb for our two part workshop series on oral history and community archiving. Community gardeners have shaped the history of New York City and it is critical that their experiences and legacies are preserved for future generations. Part 2 will focus on methods to archive and make community garden stories accessible using digital platforms such as wikimedia, social media, and online web exhibits. Participants will be provided with an introduction on how to conduct a community archive project design, identify record organization strategies and sharing their garden’s legacy with the greater public.

Please RSVP to receive the link to join the webinar.

This webinar will be co-facilitated by GreenThumb staff and Yvette Ramírez.

Facilitator Bio: Yvette Ramírez is an arts administrator, oral-historian, and archivist from Queens, NY. She is inspired by the power of community-centered archives to further explore the complexities of information access and memory within Latinx/Andean diasporic communities in the United States. With nearly a decade of experience as a cultural producer, Yvette has worked alongside community-based and cultural organizations such as The Laundromat Project, PEN America, Make The Road New York, and New Immigrant Community Empowerment.

Dig, then ride with us on NYCMTB's monthly welcome days at Highbridge Park in Manhattan!

Bring your friends and family for a day of fun in the woods and learn what it takes to build, maintain, and ride the most progressive urban bike park in America! There will be light trail maintenance tasks for all ages from 10:00 a.m. to noon. All participants, NYCMTB members, or anyone with logged volunteer hours, receive a free 20-minute clinic and a guided ride throughout the trails from 12:30 p.m to 3:00 p.m. Bikes and helmets provided!

Highbridge Park is the home of NYC's first Mountain Biking Course. The 3-mile course offers trails of varying difficulty from intermediate to expert and a free-ride trail that includes drops, steeps, and berms. The park also features a dirt jump park and pump track, making it a good place to develop different skills at all levels. The course has been featured in national media and is stewarded by volunteers just like you!

Make this day your introduction to the park, or to the sport of off-road cycling. Interested volunteers are encouraged to participate regardless of age, ability or gender. There is something for everyone at Highbridge - It's NYC's bike park!

Please bring water, sunscreen, bug repellant, and sturdy shoes or boots.

Register on Eventbrite at nycmtb.eventbrite.com.
