In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

Enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings while working on the NYC Compost Project demonstration site. Learn sustainable landscape management practices and help us make compost. Bring a water bottle, wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

This event takes place on the first Wednesdays of the month from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on the second and third Saturdays of the month from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are implemented by DSNY-funded teams at seven host organizations, including Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Big Reuse, Earth Matter NY, Lower East Side Ecology Center, Queens Botanical Garden, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, and The New York Botanical Garden. With Jean-Pierre Cargol, François Truffaut
1970 | Drama | PG | 1h23 | France | The Film Desk

A scantily clothed and dirty young boy is admitted to the National Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in Paris. Having been found in the forest, the child is unable to speak, communicate or function in society. His case is taken up by Doctor Itard, a lone physician (played by Truffaut himself) who has unyielding dedication to re-integrating the lad into society. More Art premieres NYsferatu: Symphony of a Century by Andrea Mastrovito, a spectacular, hand-animated, silent film that combines music and community engagement to create a powerful and poignant statement about the horrors of the unknown and the inspiring search for liberty.

Resetting Friedrich W. Murnau’s classic 1922 film Nosferatu in contemporary New York City, Mastrovito and his team of 12 artists have created over 35,000 original drawings to replicate the beautifully eerie flickering shutter effect of early cinema. The re-imagined storyline and title cards of NYsferatu were made in collaboration with recent immigrants and English-as-new-language learners. Musical improvisation by The Michael Leonhart Orchestra.

The movie starts at dusk, generally around 7:30 p.m.. Film runs 65 mins.

This exhibition and event are made possible by the Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant, which supports the creation of artworks by New York City-based emerging artists at 10 parks that are highly visible, but underserved by cultural programming. The Bronx Meets East Africa is an exhibition showcasing East African artists and their emerging relationships to the Bronx community. The artwork featured will focus on the following themes: The drive to feed one’s family, to provide a decent shelter for self and loved ones, to belong, and to leave a legacy.

The event intends to showcase the similarities and differences of Ugandans’ daily life compared to that of an American displaced in the Bronx. Of the 3.2 million foreign born residing in NYC, the Bronx is home to the largest concentration of African born immigrants compared to other boroughs.

Join us in celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana at Wave Hill. Ikebana is the Japanese tradition of flower arranging, and Sogetsu, founded in 1927, is an avant garde style, with study groups all over the world. A famous saying by founder Sofu Teshigahara—and the credo of the Sogetsu school—is that Sogetsu can be done by anyone, anywhere, anytime with any kind of material. View beautiful works of art in an exhibition featuring arrangements, courtesy of the New York Branch of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana. Attend a live demonstration by Sogetsu instructors, and stop by The Shop at Wave Hill for a special promotion on ikebana-related titles.

This landmark New York event continues this summer, with storytelling happening every Saturday from June through September.

Liz Weir will share Irish tales and Angela Halvorson Borg will share the Iraqi story "The Golden Lamb."

Storytelling is held rain or shine. The stories are appropriate for children six years old and up. Parents or guardians are asked to sit with their children.

Enjoy free yoga in Fort Greene Park in collaboration with the public artwork Circadia by Blythe Cain, which opens June 20. Bring a yoga mat, water, and sunscreen, and wear comfortable clothes. All levels are welcome!

This weekly class will take place on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. from June 3 to October 14 (except July 1 and September 2).

This free event is sponsored by lushretreats.com for Circadia!

Meet at the flag pole between the monument and Visitor's Center. This yoga class will take place on the lawn in front of the Ft. Greene Park Visitor Center. Circadia is an interactive luminescent sculpture and seating system made from concrete and glow sand, which acts as a guide to the park entrance. Resembling a historic building foundation, Circadia also mimics the park's rolling hills and the natural rhythms found in nature.

This exhibition and event are made possible by the Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant, which supports the creation of artworks by New York City-based emerging artists at 10 parks that are highly visible, but underserved by cultural programming. The UNIQLO grant program will transform these locations into engaging art destinations with a series of rotating exhibitions and community events through 2019.
