Willowbrook Park is one of the most popular of Staten Island’s Greenbelt parks. Its combination of natural wilderness and recreational facilities draws a variety of visitors, particularly in the summer months.

The 164 acres of greenery offer a welcome contrast to the bustling neighborhood and traffic-lined streets that surround it. The Willowbrook area is mentioned in colonial records as early as 1683. Its many streams and waterways attracted early industrialists. By 1760, Willowbrook could boast of at least one sawmill and a number of factories producing metal tools.

Join the Rangers on a historic tour of Willowbrook Park and discover the park's interesting past.

Village Community Boathouse is offering free Community Rowing in our fleet of Whitehall Gigs. No experience is necessary though rowing does require some physical dexterity.

Community Rowing events are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds on site.

Please note: The rows last, depending on river conditions and crew experience, between one and three hours. Please arrive on-time as the crews will be assigned before 1:00 p.m. Bring extra water, a hat, and sunscreen as you will be rowing outdoors in the hot sun. Rowing is weather dependent and will be canceled for high winds, rain, or thunderstorms. All participants must sign a waiver and be able to climb a ladder.

A Collective Utterance is a solo exhibition of photographs by the artist Naima Green, presenting a selection of images culled from her ongoing series “Jewels from The Hinterland” (2013–present). With black and brown artists, writers, culture workers, and thinkers positioned centrally in each image, the exhibition spans green spaces throughout New York City—such as Riverside Park, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Central Park—as well as select sites across the United States.

With each photograph, Green offers a statement of quietude, solace, insistence, and strength, making visible a community purportedly relegated to the margins, yet who critically inform dominant tastes and trends. These gentle, nuanced compositions are particularly urgent within the context of seemingly interminable sociopolitical crisis, where black and brown bodies are continually imaged as sites of violence and trauma. Within the framework of A Collective Utterance, each individual is left to be—in all of their tenderness, complexities, and intricacies.

A Collective Utterance is organized by Oluremi C. Onabanjo.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

The Bronx is both a place and a collection of metaphors, a peninsula attached to the mainland in a city of islands. In many ways, it is defined by its diversities—social, demographic, geographic and temporal. Hospitals, museums, universities, formal gardens, beaches, parks, and historical sites are prominent features of the landscape. Massive public housing developments, neighborhoods of six-story apartment buildings and private homes, and bucolic landscapes surrounding long-standing estates can be found within the borders of the Bronx.

The photographers represented in this exhibit are connected to the Bronx by birth, residency, work, or affinity. Each has a unique history, a particular point of view, and an evolving personal story. Who we are as individuals and as a group is represented in this exhibit. We are creating a photographic archive of the Bronx. The Bronx Photographers Collaborative hopes these images speak to, inform, provoke, and inspire you to join us in documenting, celebrating, and advocating for the borough that means so much to us and has contributed so much to who we are.

Onabanjo.

Join NYC Parks for special concerts featuring the group Taikoza. They have created a new sound using the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Roughly translated, Taiko means "big drums" - and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings: big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance.

About Taikoza: Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the renaissance of taiko in Japan in the 60s and introduced Taiko to the world). The members of Taikoza have performed in some of the most prestigious halls and locations including Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, and Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall.

Learn American Sign Language through songs and play with other parents, educators, and/or children close to your child’s age. Go home each week with new vocabulary and new tunes to enhance communication between you and your child!

Whether you intend to incorporate sign language in your life for the long term or simply during this pre-verbal/developing verbal time, watch in awe as your child discovers the world of language. See the research come to life, as music and sign language both aid in the development of language and literacy. Baby Fingers programs incorporate the research supporting the benefits of sign language at all ages and stages, for children with and without special needs.

Onabanjo.

There will be a pre-screening performance at 7:00 p.m. The film begins at sundown.

Monsoon Wedding (India)
Directed by Mira Nair; 2001, 113 mins.
Programmed by Film Forum.
A buoyant comedy of an Indian family preparing for a flamboyant (arranged) marriage, Monsoon Wedding finds the frenzied upper-middle-class Vernas of Delhi facing impending disaster. Wedding costs are spiraling out of control. The bride-to-be, who barely knows the groom, pursues a fling with her talk-show-host ex. Far-flung relatives descend on the family to further complicate matters. And family secrets threaten to burst into the open on the big day. Filmmaker Mira Nair (Salaam Bombay!, Mississippi Masala) infuses this sprawling, uproarious story with humor, sensitivity and a clear-eyed take on the clash between tradition and modernity – brightened by a joyous soundtrack. Named the best movie romance of the 21st century by IndieWire. “Nair’s stereotype-shattering movie — like the polymorphous culture it illuminates — borrows from Bollywood, Hollywood and cinema verité, and comes up with something exuberantly its own.” – David Ansen, Newsweek
