This study will enable Parks to:

• Learn how many people the park serves
• Secure data to inform decisions about park maintenance
• Identify ways to ensure the park best serves the community

This is a unique opportunity to give back to Highbridge Park and learn about the park’s impact!

Volunteers must be 18 years or older.

Calling all park lovers! This spring, the New York Junior League's Playground Improvement Project committee ("PIP") invites you to join them in rolling up your sleeves to help revitalize Jackie Robinson Park in Harlem.

Throughout five weekends in April and May PIP committee members, New York Junior League volunteers, and community volunteers will spend a day in the park gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this highly used space. PIP will provide you with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt.

All volunteer days are rain or shine.

Registration
All participants (ages 16 and older) must register in advance. Volunteers can sign up nyjl.org/playground Please RSVP if you are interested in participating in one or more park days (April 22, 23, 29, 30 and May 6, 7, 13, 20, 21). Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project
For more than 25 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized, and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend cleanup days include landscaping and repairing the parks. We work with over 700 volunteers each season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community. Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. Guest co-curators and art historians Deborah Frizzell and Harry J. Weil lead a conversationwith artists Samira Abbassy, Scherezade Garcia, and Fay Ku who are exhibiting as part of Outcasts: Women in the Wilderness. The artists speak about how they use ancient and modern mythologies as a source to create artwork that explores hybrid alternatives to the social and cultural order.

Samira Abbassy’s self-portraiture and mixed-media sculptures explore cultural identity, knitting together disparate visual languages, conventions and myths drawn from Arab-Iranian, Persian, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, and Buddhist traditions.

Interdisciplinary visual artist Scherezade Garcia addresses contemporary allegories of history and the processes of colonization and migration, which frequently evoke memories of faraway home and the hopes that accompany relocating in a new land.

Fay Ku layers her drawings with hybrid animal, human and vegetal forms, her archetypes comment on cultural identity and tradition through a delicate sense of line and a sensitivity to surface.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

To RSVP for tour, please visit on.nyc.gov/gracietour.

Currently, Gracie Mansion is not offering group tours. If you are part of a private organization that would like to tour the house, please email your request, including the size of group, your name and the purpose of a tour, to gracieinfo@cityhall.nyc.gov and we will work to add you to one of the currently scheduled tours.

About Free Community Rowing
The Community Rows are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. Visit the Village Community Boathouse's website for more information and photos!
