Enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings while working on the NYC Compost Project demonstration site. The best way to learn about compost is to make it, and attending our Turn & Learns will make you a pro. Bring a water bottle, wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. If you help us make compost, you can take compost. Please bring your own container. (Please note this is a volunteer event and not a pick-up event. You must volunteer at the work day to receive compost. Supplies may be limited.) Registration is strongly recommended.

Registration requested.

The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are implemented by DSNY-funded teams at seven host organizations, including Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Big Reuse, Earth Matter NY, Lower East Side Ecology Center, Queens Botanical Garden, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, and The New York Botanical Garden. For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their workouts, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

In this engaging lecture architect and historian, John Reddick will explore the colonial aesthetic in Harlem's early "modern" architecture, considering how it served as a backdrop to the jazz age. Discussing select local early twentieth-century designs, such as the Roger Morris Apartments and the Colonial Park & Pool, Reddick will place into context the architecture of Harlem and the work of African American architect, Vertner Tandy, and his residence for Madame Walker on 136th Street, known during the Renaissance as the "Dark Tower."

John Reddick has served as a curator and discussion leader for the Harlem Focus series at the Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt Design Center and has worked on several Harlem public space & art projects including Ralph Ellison Memorial, Harriet Tubman Square, and Frederick Douglass Circle. Reddick received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Ohio State University and a Master of Architecture from Yale University.

What began as a shared curiosity, Staten Island residents Val Falcone and Michael Shanley have embarked on a quest to uncover the history and subsequent transformation of Huguenot Beach.

We invite the public to join us in an exploration of the art and artifacts we have assembled throughout our journey. In addition to displaying one of the most comprehensive collections of Terra Marine Inn artifacts, the exhibit will also feature driftwood sculpture crafted from local materials, mixed media projects inspired by historical events and beach ephemera, and a photographic retrospective of Huguenot over the past 120 years.

This project is made possible (in part) by a DCA Premier Grant from Staten Island Arts, with public funding from the NYC Dept. Of Cultural Affairs.

A high level of research and experimentation informs Peter Hoffmeister’s sculptures and installations. When working site-specifically, he delves deeply into the location’s history, uncovering untold or forgotten narratives and revealing the institutionalized cultural ideologies that not only shape our history but also resonate in our present.

Grounding his endeavors in this type of historical inquiry, Hoffmeister approaches current concerns by exposing firmly established roots that require a fully-developed context to understand.

Grow to Learn and GreenThumb

Get to know the soil in your garden. If we take care of the soil, the soil will take care of our plants and crops. Meet the microbes and other members of the soil food web who recycle nutrients and learn best practices for soil care.

Please bring a small ziplock bag of soil or compost from your garden if you’d like to look at your soil microbes under a microscope. Workshop attendees who are members of registered GreenThumb community gardens may be eligible to take home a small kit for testing soil nutrients while supplies last.

Pre-registration is required online or by calling (212) 602-5300. Please bring a photo ID and allow time to get through security.
