To celebrate Earth Day, this year the Freshkills Park Alliance is excited to present a mix of drop-in and scheduled activities in collaboration with community partners. For those looking to learn more about the wildlife, history, or art at the park, programs will be led by Snug Harbor, Urban Park Rangers, IlluminArt Productions, United Activities Unlimited, La Colmena, New York Community League, and the New York Public Library.

Interactive workshops include community planting, seed ball making, upcycled art, plant identification, a mobile science lab, family storytime, mindful movement exercises, and a bike decoration and ride event. Visitors are also welcome to explore the New Springville Greenway.

Stay tuned for the official schedule of events and workshops. This festival is free for all ages!

Activities and events:

Storytime: An interactive and playful storytime with an environmental focus for families with young children (0-8 years old). Schedule TBD.

Mindful Movement: Commune with nature mentally and physically through yoga, stretching, and meditation. Open to all ages and modifiable for those of all ability levels.

Nature Walks: Join the Urban Park Rangers to explore the flora and fauna of Staten Island on a journey from Freshkills Park to the William T. Davis Wildlife Refuge.

Upcycled Art: Join IlluminArt Productions to sculpt a plant from your own imagination, inspired by local flowers, trees, and grasses using upcycled materials.

Mobile Lab: Explore the science of Freshkills Park through hands-on activities with our researchers!

Compost: Why is compost important? How can you make it and use it? Learn all this and more through a workshop with Snug Harbor and the NYC Compost Project. Compost pick-up and scrap drop-off will also be available!

Planting and Seed Balls: Plant and learn about native plants at the Studio + Gallery as a part of a larger beautification effort. Visitors can also make seed balls to take home and spread beneficial plants across the Island!

Bicycle & Scooter Decoration Parade: Create decorations for your bike or scooter and show them off at an end-of-day parade on the New Springville Greenway!

Planning your visit:

  • Come prepared for the outdoors! Conditions can be muddy. We recommend wearing closed-toed shoes, and be sure to dress for the weather.

Join NYC urban naturalists to explore and document the biodiversity of North Mt. Loretto State Forest during the 2022 City Nature Challenge, an annual 4-day global bioblitz to document urban wildlife. Field trip participants will be encouraged to take photos (using a camera, cell phone, or other device) of plants, insects, birds, and other wildlife encountered during the trips, to contribute to the citywide and global effort.

North Mt. Loretto State Forest is a diverse green space in Staten Island featuring hardwood forest and several wetland features. It provides critical habitat for plants and animals including amphibians and birds. It is home to many locally rare vascular plants and bryophytes. The only population of Solidago puberula (downy goldenrod) in NYC is found here.

Participants of all levels are welcome! Local naturalists with expertise on plants, birds, and insects will share their knowledge on the biodiversity of the site and how to make meaningful observations. The bioblitz will be led by Zihao Wang.

Getting There: Parking is available at the entrance on Amboy Road. North Mt. Loretto State Forest is located near the Pleasant Plains and Richmond Valley stops on the Staten Island Railroad (SIR). Participants traveling from Manhattan can take the Staten Island Ferry and transfer to the SIR. Use caution when crossing the street from the train stations due to lack of sidewalk and crosswalks.

City Nature Challenge is an international competition for people in cities to find and document urban wildlife. Bring your smartphone and we recommend downloading iNaturalist ahead of the event. Don't worry if you aren't tech-savvy; we'll have plenty of support to show you how to use the app and to help troubleshoot any issues.

Meet in front of the Seward Park Library at 10:30 p.m. Our event will start with a brief introduction and best practices followed by a bioblitz of the park. If you can't make it on Sunday morning, feel free to visit the park and capture images on your own anytime between April 29 and May 2!

The ancient Greeks and Romans were the first in recorded history to celebrate mothers, in their case certain mother goddesses. Nowadays, mothers work even harder than ever to nurture us, whether or not they are our birth mothers, and Mother’s Day, wonderfully timed to coincide—in the northeast anyway—with the arrival of spring, is the perfect opportunity to pull out all the stops.

We invite you to plan for a day in the gardens on Saturday or Sunday, May 7 or 8. Enjoy a special Family Art Project both mornings, a guided walk in the gardens both afternoons, a session of spring birding, a free session of community yoga, and a family nature walk, both on Sunday.

Learn more about the individual Mother's day sessions

Enjoy the very rare opportunity to picnic on the North Lawn (opposite Wave hill House) or in Armor Hall —space there is available on a first-come basis and space is limited. Plan to picnic between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If you dine outdoors, you may bring your own blanket and outdoor folding chairs, with your own picnic. Or you may purchase a picnic from our exclusive caterer Great Performances—reservations are required by Friday, April 29.
