Kes the Band has been flying the flag for its Trinidad and Tobago soca-influenced Caribbean pop since 2006's Three Baldheads and A Dread, but truly broke out at Carnival in 2011 with their infectious hit "Wotless." Led by the three Dieffenthaller brothers and their friend Riad Boochoon, Kes wields island rhythms with a reggae and soca heart and calypso melodies. They also had a hit with 2013's "Tuesday on the Rocks," which became the namesake for their annual concert held on the Tuesday before Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival celebration (since 2014) featuring local, regional, and international artists.

Performing: Danny Mixon Quartet featuring Antoinette Montague

Socrates and The Jazz Foundation have presented this beloved live music series since 2016, featuring world-class musicians on each second Thursday throughout the summer. This year’s edition focuses on the work of three profoundly important pianists.

Born in Harlem and based in Brooklyn, pianist Danny Mixon has long been one of NYC’s jazz treasures. His expressive technique and mastery of the blues have been on keen display from his early days with Patti LaBelle and Betty Carter, through engagements with Charles Mingus and Yusef Lateef, and in years-long runs as a leader at uptown institutions like Showman’s and the Lenox Lounge. This concert features his frequent collaborator, the phenomenal vocalist Antoinette Montague of Jazz Woman to the Rescue!

Jazz and Stargazing: Join students and astronomy faculty from the Natural Sciences Department at LaGuardia Community College to view stars and other celestial bodies through their telescope on each night of Jazz at Socrates.

The NYC Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment and NYC Parks present New York Music Month Concert Series!

Join us for a Hip Hop Family Day celebration featuring Uptown Vinyl Supreme, Ana Garcia, DJ Perly, and Grandmaster Caz.

Uptown Vinyl Supreme is a Bronx-based DJ collective and community organization paying homage to the analog roots of music, party, and dance culture. Records have the power to uplift, inspire, and heal the people. Friends and lovers of vinyl, Sunny Cheeba, Buddy, Silver Disco, and Brujo Boogie take this responsibility seriously and continue to explore progressive ways in which this power can reach audiences all over the world, be it through dance gatherings, individual sessions, workshops, private functions, or cultural institutions.

Ana Garcia, better known by her stage name Rokafella, is a breakdancer and dance teacher. At the age of 11, Rokafella had thus far found her step and was on the path of becoming a B-Girl. Garcia is not only a renowned dancer but also a poet, musician, filmmaker, and entrepreneur. Rokafella is also regarded as the pioneer for the new generation of B-Girls and B-Boys. Raised in Spanish Harlem by Puerto Rican immigrants, Garcia grew up seeing hip hop performed in her own neighborhood during the late 1970s and '80s. In 1991, veteran breakdancer Kwikstep took Garcia on as a mentee. She would go on to dance with many crews in New York City including The Transformers, The Breeze Team, and the New York City Float Committee. With her now-husband, Kwikstep, Rokafella co-founded and performs with the non-profit hip-hop dance company Full Circle Productions to empower young dancers through the positive power of hip-hop.

DJ Perly is a female Puerto Rican Russian American DK who plays hip hop, breaks, and house music, and practices the art of turntablism with a passion. She is the first female to win the DMC Championship!

Grandmaster Caz is a Hall of Fame DJ, world-renowned MC, lecturer, author, historian, host, promoter, and speaker.

In Association with Sony presents Blue Note Jazz Festival

The Jack DeJohnette, Ravi Coltrane and Matt Garrison Trio is a multi-generational jazz supergroup. DeJohnette is a highly influential jazz drummer inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2007; Ravi Coltrane - post-bop jazz saxophonist - is the son of jazz pianist Alice Coltrane and saxophonist John Coltrane, who played with DeJohnette; Matthew Garrison is DeJohnette's godson, and an accomplished bassist in his own right, described by the New York Times as "an electric bass virtuoso." Fifty years ago DeJohnette played with Coltrane Garrison's fathers in John Coltrane's group; on the 2016 album In Movement, he plays Coltrane’s haunting elegy “Alabama” with their sons. The trio is joined by the harpist Brandee Younger, a modern harpist, under the influence of Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane herself.

She first started rapping and dancing at 11 years old, and did stints in the groups Los Tetas and Makiza before setting off on her own in 2006 with the single "Ya No Fue." In 2009 she embraced hip-hop with her Grammy-nominated breakout LP 1977, which drew comparisons to DJ Premier's work with Jeru the Damaja. Self-proclaimed “Tropical Futurists,” they reach into the past to find the sounds of the future, with rhythms rooted in cumbia yet incorporating champeta, Afropop, calypso, dub, Haitian kompa, and even a little bit of Cape Verde’s space echo vibes.

The Summer Solstice is the longest and most light-filled day of the year, and one of our favorite occasions to celebrate at Socrates!

In honor of the current exhibition, Chronos Cosmos: Deep Time, Open Space, we’ll be taking our festivities from high-energy daylight to reflective starlit nighttime, exploring the celestial-terrestrial connection and otherworldly origins of expression and art.

The festival features activities for everyone: Agostino Arts face-painting, tarot readings by Liz Nieves, lantern-making with Noguchi Museum, spaceship sculpture building with Free Style Arts Association, light-up inflatables with artist Tamar Ettun, solar observing, and telescope tours of the sky with LaGuardia Community College’s Natural Sciences Department.

And as always, get ready to dance! Performance and percussion rock our stage with Secret Society Dance Company, Imamou, and powerhouse ensemble, Heritage OP, offering musical textures of Africa and the Caribbean.

Once night begins to fall, we begin a very special version of our annual sunset Solstice ritual featuring ceremony, circle singing, and story sharing with Cetiliztli Nauhcampa Quetzalcoatl in Ixachitlan, Urban Shaman Mama Donna, and Kevin Nathaniel with Harmony Mbira.

Schedule:

  • Taulant Mehmeti: 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
  • The Afro Nick: 8:20 p.m. - 9:20 p.m.

Nick has performed widely at concerts and festivals throughout the United States and also served as a music producer in New York City.

Festivals and venues have included European Music Day, Make Music New York Festival, Herndon Festival VA, Eastern Moat Theater in Crete, Rockwood Music Hall, Nublu, The Bitter End, Mercury Lounge, Lucille’s BB King’s, Sullivan Hall, Piano’s, Arlene’s Grocery

Kosovo born Albanian guitarist Taulant Mehmeti is a natural improviser, drawing upon the rich Balkan rhythms and gypsy music he grew up hearing and playing. Along with his deep interest in jazz and Django Reinhardt, Charlie Parker and Wes Montgomery as major influences, his musical sensibility is equally informed by funk, rock, and world music genres. Taulant's music weaves these bright strands into a shimmering tapestry of his own creation.

As a youngster in war-torn Kosovo, Taulant Mehmeti amazed local audiences with his songwriting talent and musicianship. Under the mentorship of renowned local jazz guitaristArmend Xhaferi, he developed into a leading jazz player in Kosovo and Albania.

Now an active performer on the New York scene, Mehmeti has played, as a leader and a sideman, in venues including Blue Note, B.B.Kings and Iridium just to name a few.

Taulant's performances have taken him to over 20 countries and varied settings, among them: TED Talks and Prishtina Jazz Festival in Kosovo; Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland, International Gypsy Romanian Festival Bucharest; Tirana Jazz Festival and Shkodra Summer Jazz, Albania; Castellon Jazz Festival in Spain, Reykjavik Jazz Festival in Iceland, Jazz a Carthage in Tunisia, Contours of Contemporary Kosovo Istanbul, Turkey, Jazz Appreciation Month at WBGO in New Jersey; and in New York: Stars of Tomorrow- Hudson River Park, Jazz in the Square and Ideas City Festival - New Museum.

He has performed with artists such as Vic Juris, Armend Xhaferi, Ilir Bajri, Linda Briceño, Baden Goyo, Nesim Maxhuni, and Gabriel Chakarji.

His debut jazz album Pinxhur'n'Pestil with his band Trio of Love, received positive press and garnered airplay, including a New Year's Eve live TV performance on KlanKosova network in Kosovo. Other notable recordings include his performance with Kosovo jazz drummer Nesim Maxhuni’s Hip-Bop Quintet release Syndrome; as well as his appearance on ErnestoLlorens' new album "On My Gypsy Way" featuring legendary gypsy guitarists Bireli Lagrene, Stochelo Rosenberg and Adrien Moingnard with whom he shared tracks.

Taulant Mehmeti recently graduated from The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, holding the distinction for being the first jazz guitarist from Kosovo to study there.

Dubbed “The World’s Coolest Day Party” by Vice, Everyday People is a monthly day party with a 90s R&B soundtrack that celebrates the black diaspora. Founded in 2012 by Saada Ahmed, Chef Roblé Ali & DJ Moma, the intersectional safe space takes its name from Arrested Development’s song "People Everyday," and is both a party and a platform, with multiple residencies in NY & LA, even transporting their vibes across the Atlantic to Nairobi, Johannesburg and Cape Town. This summer they bring the party to Brooklyn's Herbert Von King park.

In Association with Francerocks Inc, Sacem and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy

In celebration of Fete de la Musique (“Music Day”), a celebration of music on the summer solstice first celebrated in Paris in 1982, two pioneering French groups grace SummerStage, in association with Francerocks Festival. Zdar will represent the electronic duo Cassius, who first started working together in 1988, producing albums for the iconic French rapper MC Solaar and doing remixes for the likes of Neneh Cherry, Björk, Daft Punk, Air and Depeche Mode. Producers Philippe Cerboneschi and Hubert Blanc-Francard—better known as Philippe Zdar and Boom Bass—have since harnessed the pop appeal with an underground heart that defined the French house wave they contributed to in the late 90s. They’re joined by Les Negresses Vertes—a group so named for the verbal abuse directed at its members at an early concert—who mix Latin, rai, and folk with a punk sensibility to make unique dance music.

While dancehall has risen to become the most popular lane in Jamaican music, infiltrating clubs and parties around the world, a new generation of roots reggae artists carries the torch for the likes of Bob Marley and the Wailers, making music promoting socially conscious messages and the Rastafari faith. Jesse Royal, mentored by the late Fatis Burrell, took his singing talents from church to the recording studio after befriending Ziggy Marley's son Daniel; his hit "Always Be Around" anointed him as one of Jamaica's rising stars, and his latest LP, Lily of Da Valley, hit #1 on US Reggae charts. Rapper/singer/producer Kabaka Pyramid returns to SummerStage after a sold out 5-week European tour. Kabaka Pyramid is seen as a leader in reggae revival, whose debut album Kontraband, executively produced by Damian Marley, blends hip-hop's lyricism with dancehall's energy and reggae's soul. The Federation Sound's Max Glazer, a Brooklyn dancehall mainstay who once served as Rihanna's touring DJ, will man the turntables.

One of indie rock's strongest new voices, Michelle Zauner showcases a diverse pop palette as Japanese Breakfast. Writing pretty pop songs about death and grief while wielding strings and AutoTune with equal aplomb, she brings a production both nuanced and cinematic in scope. With support from Australia's Hatchie, a Pitchfork "Rising" artist with a spaced-out dream pop wall of sound whose debut LP, Keepsake (out June 21), floats as if carried by a cloud.

Celebrate Canada Day with two female fronted pop bands from opposite ends of the Great White North. Toronto-via-Prince Edward Island 5-piece Alvvays is best known for their breakout hit "Archie, Marry Me;" channeling a love for Teenage Fanclub into witty lyrics and sweet melodies that have a sound all their own, their latest LP, 2017's “Antisocialites,” took home a Juno Award. They're joined by Vancouver's sun-drenched Flying Nun-influenced indie pop band The Courtneys, the first non-New Zealand band signed to the legendary Kiwi label responsible for the enduring "Dunedin Sound." "The quintessential New York MC" (The FADER) first turned heads rocking Bobby Shmurda's flow harder than he could on M.A The Mixtape, but by 2016 Young M.A had cracked both the Billboard charts and Forbes' 30-under-30 list on the strength of the triple-platinum mega-hit, "OOOUUU." Her latest hit—a remix of Blueface's "Thotiana"—proves she's "one of the boys" but still does their schtick better than they do. She is joined by NYC hip-hop figurehead and radio DJ Funk Flex
