Moderated by Nicholas Van Eyck, panelists include Professor Andrew Lambert (Assistant Professor of Philosophy at City University of New York, College of Staten Island, East Asian Studies Program) with additional panelists to be announced. This program includes a tour of the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden, and is in celebration of the Breaking Ground: Twenty Years of the New York Chinese Scholar's Garden exhibition, which is on display at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art through December 29, 2019.

Purchase tickets online.

Nick Van Eyck (moderator) first came to the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden (NYCSG) as a visitor looking to satisfy his curiosity and quickly evolved into a part-time docent. Nick obtained a degree in Linguistics, Chinese, and East Asian Studies from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee (UWM) and worked for numerous years in real estate to produce market feasibility studies and appraisals. He also spent nine months in Taiwan studying Mandarin Chinese on a government scholarship, was the President of the Chinese Club at UWM, and is a recipient of the Wisconsin Association for Language Teachers Certificate of Excellence.

Andrew Lambert (panelist) is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at City University of New York, College of Staten Island, and received his PhD from the University of Hawai’i. He has been a visiting scholar at Peking University and at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and was a Mombusho Scholar at Kyoto University. His research focuses primarily on ethics and Chinese thought, particularly the relationship between conceptions of moral conduct and personal attachment. His recent publications include, “Friendship East and West: How the Confucians help us rethink the morality of friendship” and “Confucian Ethics and Care: An Amicable Split?” and “Rethinking disability through classical Daoist thought.” He has completed several translations of works in Chinese philosophy, including a full translation of contemporary Chinese intellectual Li Zehou’s book, A History Ancient Chinese Thought, published by Routledge in 2019.

The Breaking Ground exhibition is made possible by the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation and New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Additional support is provided by Visit Suzhou, China. Breaking Ground events and programs are funded in part by the New York City Council Cultural Immigrant Initiative. Programming in the NY Chinese Scholar’s Garden is supported by Bank of America.

Julia Simoniello is an artist living in Staten Island, NYC. She has shown work in various group shows in galleries around Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as a few small galleries in her hometown of Staten Island. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a degree in Illustration. She is also an award-winning musician, beauty queen, and tomato gardener. Some of her visual art can be viewed at juliasimoniello.com.

Reclamation is a series of drawings and paintings by Julia Simoniello that documents the artist’s experience as a queer, femme artist living in a changing suburban landscape in a dying world.

The art will confront sexuality, femininity, death, loss, and life on Staten Island through an exploration of psychological portraiture. The art on display aims to undermine the prototypical figure as mother or object of beauty.

Reclamation is on display October 19 to December 29, 2019 in the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art (Buildings C & G) at Snug Harbor. $5 Gallery Admission | $4 Students/Seniors/Members | Free for students grades 6-12 with student ID. The Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art is open on Thursdays through Fridays from noon to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Reclamation is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. This project is made possible in part by a DCA Premier Grant from Staten Island Arts, with public funding for the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Image credit: Julia Simoniello

Measure for Measure by William Shakespeare, Directed by LA Williams

This season, The Public’s acclaimed Mobile Unit transports communities of the five boroughs to the vibrant streets of New Orleans for a bold new production of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure directed by LA Williams.

It’s 1979, and though Mardi Gras has been officially cancelled, the community is still celebrating. Temporarily left in charge by the Duke, the upright and uptight Lord Angelo has decided to crack down on the city’s debauchery, arresting young Claudio for impregnating his fiancée Juliet before their wedding. When virtuous Isabella, Claudio’s sister, hears of his death sentence, she begs Lord Angelo for mercy. The hypocritical Angelo propositions her instead, leaving Isabella with an impossible choice: save her soul or her brother’s life. In this timely production, lovers and leaders in disguise reveal how those in power take advantage of those without it – posing the question, can the law be both just and merciful?

In partnership with the Public Theater Mobile Unit.

The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are implemented by DSNY-funded teams at seven host organizations, including Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Big Reuse, Earth Matter NY, Lower East Side Ecology Center, Queens Botanical Garden, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, and The New York Botanical Garden. Described by NPR as a “cure for alienation” and “music that’s not about means to ends but about meaning and transcendence,” New York-based Falsa is a cathartic musical experience rooted in 14th century Sufi music of North India and Pakistan, and developed into a chamber fusion ensemble, a diverse group of extraordinary improvisational musicians dedicated to craft.

The effect of listening to Falsa is to be transported both inwards and across centuries of joys, sorrows, and longings.
