Join the NYC Parks Stewardship team and staff at the Greenbelt Native Plant Center to process beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata) for the upcoming spring season!

Ammophila is the dominant coastal grass in our region, helping to build and stabilize front dunes. Because the grass primarily spreads by rhizome, we harvest bare-root plant material from GNPC production plots to replant into dune restoration projects. Before planting, the stems must be cleaned and packaged. This process involves hand-stripping outer brown layers and excess roots, ensuring the viability of the green material and facilitating its replanting.

Volunteers should dress in clothes that can get dirty, close-toed shoes, and warm layers. Facemasks are required! Please note this event will occur inside of a greenhouse with room for social distancing, or outside if weather allows.

Join the Freshkills Park Alliance and NYC Parks for a volunteer day at Schmul Park and discover ways to get creative in our green spaces and support the bees! Ages 12+

We will work together to remove harmful plants and litter, learn how to establish complex pollinator ecosystems, and highlight all the ways pollinators support our parks and our planet!

Please note: As per NYC Parks policy, volunteers must sign an activity waiver and will be required to show proof they have received two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or the one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in order to participate.

Plan Ahead: Wear long pants, close-toed shoes, and insect repellant. Also wear a hat and bring water and a snack. Tools, gloves, masks, and sanitizer will be provided. Do not attend if you are sick or have been exposed to COVID-19.

Can't make it? You can still help by promoting our volunteer projects with your friends and neighbors. Students can receive credit for community service hours. We will also be adding more volunteer opportunities as the season continues. For more information about upcoming volunteer opportunities, check out our website at freshkillspark.org/volunteer.

Join NYC H2O along with the National Resources Protective Association for a volunteer cleanup at Oakwood Beach! Oakwood Beach and adjoining wetlands deal with a double-edged sword of being a secret to most of Staten island. While the wildlife holds strong, the few people that are around, and the close proximity to a waste plant, brings in a huge amount of trash. The site holds one of the highest density populations of Osprey seen on the Island - including Fresh Kills. The cleanup will run from 10am to 12:00pm. Gloves, garbage bags and pickers will be provided. Please wear your mask! Kayak along Freshkills Park's waterways! This two-mile round-trip paddle is a chance to explore the creeks and shorelines of Freshkills Park and experience the wildlife while the site is closed to the public. We know this program fills quickly and wish we could offer it more frequently. But we have a small staff and are generally limited to trips on the weekend during high tide.

There is a $20 suggested donation per participant. Your donation supports education, programming, and research at the Freshkills Park Alliance and makes programs like this possible.

Your ticket admits 1 car. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, all participants must provide their own car that will stay on-site the whole time. Participants may not use a bicycle, taxi or ride-share service. Each ticket holder may bring up to 3 additional guests in their car. During registration you will be asked about additional participants in your car. Due to limited reservations, carpooling with friends and family is encouraged.

This event is held in partnership with NYC Parks.

The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to reduce waste in NYC and rebuild NYC’s soil by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs and staff are funded and managed through the DSNY Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability (BRS) in partnership with host institutions.

ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS -- PLEASE REVIEW THIS COVID-19 SAFETY INFORMATION

Perform a self-health check at home to see if you may be sick with the coronavirus. If you exhibit any of the following symptoms, please do NOT volunteer.

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Sore throat
  • New loss of taste or smell

Wear a face covering. People who do not show symptoms may still be able to spread COVID-19. A face covering can help prevent you from spreading COVID-19 to other people, so you should wear one whenever you leave home and cannot maintain at least six feet of distance from others. A face covering can include anything that covers your nose and mouth including dust masks, scarves, and bandanas, but an N95 mask remains the most effective at preventing the spread of coronavirus. These are readily available at most retailers stocking masks.

GrowTogether with us for Earth Week at Part 2 of the 38th Annual GreenThumb GrowTogether Conference! New York City is home to hundreds of species of pollinating insects. While butterflies and bumblebees are easily-spotted inhabitants of our community gardens, meet a few of New York City’s lesser-known pollinators—including wasps, flower flies, and specialist bees— during this workshop with Sarah Ward from National Wildlife Federation and Chris Keussling (aka Flatbush Gardener). During a walk through the garden, participants will learn tips and tricks for observing pollinators and welcoming them into our gardens. Participants will also learn how to use the community science app iNaturalist to identify pollinators and contribute valuable data about pollinators in New York City.

Register on Eventbrite.

Facilitated by Sarah Ward, National Wildlife Federation, and Chris Keussling (aka Flatbush Gardener). Sarah Ward is the Schoolyard and Community Habitats Program Manager for National Wildlife Federation NYC. She is a gardener and educator endlessly interested in the plants, people, and places that make up the NYC ecosystem. Chris Keussling is a Brooklyn naturalist and gardener specializing in gardening with native plants to create habitat for pollinators and other invertebrates.

Rain date: Sunday, April 24, same time

Tickets will be available until two days before the event. This will allow us time to prepare for the attendees who have registered in advance. Walk-ins are welcome to attend and observe, but supplies aren't guaranteed.

Please visit the 38th Annual GreenThumb GrowTogether Conference Guide for a full list of workshop descriptions, facilitators, and other details.

A permanent exhibition celebrating the community's maritime heritage.

Located on the southermost point of New York, Tottenville's coastal environment was at the center of its rich maritime history. The surrounding waterways provided economic and social benefits, and the area became a natural location for bustling shipbuilding and repair yards. The Rutan-Becket House stands as a testament to this industry. The exhibition highlights both the economic and social use of the waterfront from the mid-19th century through the 20th century with photographs, artifacts, and artwork.
