Caribbean-American artists Devin Osorio and Tania L. Balan-Gaubert's Gallery transforms the Lefferts Historic House front porch into a Caribbean veranda with a multimedia installation featuring Osorio's tropical-patterned Dracaena Cane Coil Curtain, comprised of hanging coiled balls, and Balan-Gaubert's salvaged furniture sculptures, Somewhere in the Unfinished. Says Osorio: "I am referencing the plants and types of objects that my grandmother decorated her own patio at her home in the Dominican Republic. This was my favorite place to be when I visited, and I want to bring that same joy and sense of island summer ease to Lefferts Historic House." Says Balan-Gaubert: "Chairs placed in front of homes in a way that suggests continued use are evocative of the lives inside who come outdoors to enjoy the weather or be in the company of others, and can be visual representations of a city… Stoop life… porch sitting… block parties and barbecues signal the aesthetics of community."

"Threads" examines the history of linen production from field to fabric. Visitors can examine the Conference House collection of antique tools of the trade such as flax break, hackle, carder, and spinning wheel. The exhibit includes dried flax plant samples, yarn, and linens.

Linen, a natural textile used and valued by humans for thousands of years for its useful properties, was the fabric of choice in colonial America. Linen fabric is made from the cellulose fibers that grow inside of the stalks of the flax plant. Linum usitatissimum is one of the oldest cultivated plants in human history.

Please note: Although the Conference House closed for the winter months on December 21, the Threads exhibit will accept visitors by appointment during the wintertime. The Conference House's official Spring re-opening date is April 5, 2019.

The daughter of an American professor father and Mixtec singer mother, the Oaxaca-born singer-songwriter and actress Lila Downs has long been a champion of Mexico's indigenous populations; For evidence, look no further than the video for her duet with Juanes "La Patria Modina," which highlights the real-world after effects of NAFTA and the US-Mexico drug war on indigenous Mexicans. While her early work was often jazzy, she quickly evolved into a folkloric style, and eventually would dabble in ranchera, bolero, blues, and soul, singing in indigenous languages such as Mixtec, Zapotec, Mayan, Nahuatl and Purépecha on her way to winning a Grammy (Pecados y Milagros, 2010) and three Latin Grammy awards. She's joined by indigenous Colombian-Canadian musician, singer, and songwriter Lido Pimienta, who pairs traditional indigenous and afro-caribbean rhythms with next-gen synthesizers and electronic compositions—she won the 2017 Polaris Music Prize for her LP La Papessa. With DJ Ripley, a Brooklyn/Philly-based border-busting DJ that celebrates people's stories across race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality with global street bass sounds.

Harboring no illusions and expecting no answers, Karenin comes to Vronsky and asks him the question which has been tormenting him all his life: what made his mother cross the line? After some hesitation Vronsky agrees to tell the story of his tragic love for Anna Karenina, observing that people remember only what they choose to remember. Immersed in the past, Vronsky begins to reassess the story of thirty years ago and finally comes to realize that for many years he has been in the grip of the bygone events.

Astoria Park Alliance will present a box office smash hit Bohemian Rhapsody as the third annual spring movie screening in Astoria Park.

A limited amount of FREE popcorn will be distributed.

The movie will be screened on the great lawn of Astoria Park overlooking the sunset across the East River and is scheduled to begin at sundown, which is generally around 8:15 pm. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring their own blankets and picnics for the movie night that's turned into an annual tradition for the Astoria Park Alliance.

Attendees are encouraged to RSVP on Facebook.

Bohemian Rhapsody

This biopic follows the life of Freddie Mercury, lead singer of the British rock band Queen, as he rose to stardom. This film features the iconic rock music of Queen and an Oscar-winning performance of Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury.

"APA Presents Movies Under the Stars" was born out of a desire to schedule a screening for the late spring, when the weather's comfortable and the event calendar is less occupied. A weekend evening was specifically targeted along with a title that would be appealing to an adult audience.

For years, we have admired and helped promote the July - August Monday night movie series that Central Astoria LDC has sponsored and hosted in Astoria Park. The Alliance hopes to replicate the old-time drive-in-without-the-drive neighborhood feel that brings a magical sensation to the park.

The Astoria Park Alliance is able to offer free public programming to the community thanks to generous donations made through PayPal on our website and at our fundraisers.

WHERE DO WE GO NOW? (Et maintenant on va où ?)
Directed by Nadine Labaki, 2011, PG-13, 1h40, France-Lebanon
With Claude Baz Moussawbaa, Layla Hakim, Nadine Labaki, Yvonne Maalouf

Presented in partnership with the Consulate General of Lebanon in New York, the Washington Square Park Conservancy, with the support of Sézane and FF2 Media LLC.

In a remote village in Lebanon, where the church and the mosque stand side-by-side, the town’s women try to keep their blowhard men from starting a religious war. Women heartsick over sons, husbands, and fathers lost to previous flare-ups unite to distract their men with clever, even comical ruses, from faking a miracle to hiring a troop of Ukrainian strippers.

Soils in urban areas are more likely than soils elsewhere to contain certain contaminants. In this introductory workshop, participants will learn about lead contamination in exposed soils. Want to know how to safely garden? Curious about what steps you can take to protect your children? This workshop will detail simple and easy steps you, your family, and your neighbors can take to safely enjoy the outdoors.

We will offer free soil testing through our partner to find out the levels of lead in your soil! We will outline which areas are likely to contain higher lead levels and demonstrate the best way to obtain samples for accurate results. Bring in soil samples to the workshop or submit your soils after the demonstration.

Attendees should be 18+

This workshop is an activity of Strengthening Our Common Ground: Lead in Soils in Greenpoint, a project made possible with funding provided by the Office of the New York State Attorney General and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation through the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund.
