  • Growing Healthy Soils: Gardeners’ Roles in Protecting Human and Environmental Health
    Noon – 1:00 p.m.
Hannah Shayler and Perl Egendorf (Cornell University)
Urban gardeners continually create healthy urban soils, and many experienced growers know how to effectively limit exposure to soil contaminants. These skills and best management practices have emerged from collaborations between growers and researchers, in NYC and in cities across the world. Come discuss some trends across the U.S. in community-engaged research on soil contaminants, and the roles you can play in better protecting your community and environmental health.

Hannah Shayler is an Extension Associate at Cornell University, where she coordinates Healthy Soils, Healthy Communities and other programs. She works together with gardeners, farmers, community members, agency partners, researchers, educators, and others to address concerns about lead and other contaminants in soils. Through a better understanding of our soils and healthy gardening practices, we can support urban food production and the many other benefits that gardening, and farming bring to our cities and our communities.

Perl Egendorf learns from soils and people who work with them. Currently, she uses biogeochemical and participatory action research methods to study bacterial and fungal communities in newly constructed soils. In collaboration with many experts outside of academia, she conducts experiments on the ways urban soils can mitigate climate change, promote food justice, and support BIPOC-led movements for justice and liberation.

  • Best Practices for Youth Engagement
    5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Lila Elman (NYC Parks Greenthumb) and Maureen Connolly (CBK Associates)

This webinar will bring together facilitators youth members to share lessons learned and best practices for meaningfully engaging youth in community gardens. Community gardeners will learn practical tips for sustaining consistent youth participation. A leadership development expert will present skill-building activities and exercises for gardeners and youth. GreenThumb will also share key findings from its recent evaluation of the YLC program, based on surveys and interviews with youth participants and adult facilitators.

Lila Elman is NYC Parks GreenThumb's Youth Engagement Coordinator, working to support community gardeners in facilitating Youth Leadership Councils, in partnership with NYC Service. She is a community gardener herself and has experience as a children's garden and nutrition educator.

Maureen Connolly of CBK Associates plans, develops and delivers content for the Youth Leadership Council program in NYC. Of special concern have been integrating service learning across the curriculum, understanding reflection, and Meeting Common Core Standards through a service-learning lens.

Explore and celebrate our own history with public historian and genealogist Debbie-Ann Paige and history teacher Diane Isaac as we discuss the enduring value and unique challenge of sharing Black history.

Registration required

Staten Island has an inspiring past of thriving African-American communities. The dominant narrative of African-American history focuses on the violence and injustice of enslavement and systemic racism, or on the African-American stars who form the constellations of our pop culture. Excavating local African-American history introduces us to the individuals and families who have contributed to the fabric of our own lives today, here in our own borough.

Debbie-Ann Paige is a public historian specializing in local African-American history and a professional genealogist. She is co-president and a founding member of the Richard B. Dickenson Staten Island Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS), a newly appointed member of the New York City Council task force created to examine monuments, statues, public art, and historical markers on city-owned property and Owner of PAIGE ONE ASSIST: A Legacy Research Company. Debbie-Ann facilitates public history forums focused on the historical perspectives of race and race relations.

Diane Isaac has taught history at Staten Island’s Curtis High School for 19 years. She has taught every social studies subject. Her commitment to community is strong. She has mentored numerous clubs, including the Feminist Club and the Black Awareness Club, and she leads annual student trips to The National Archives and the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian. Along with colleagues, she organized Curtis High School’s first all-day Black History event. The event featured prominent Black Staten Island community leaders and highlighted the achievements of students, both past and present. Ms Isaac also co-founded the Curtis Black and Brown Coalition to address issues of equity and inclusion, social emotional learning, and restorative justice. The Coalition has worked closely in partnership with the UFT, AFT, NYCID, and The Schlechty Center.

Community gardeners from across New York City have been gathering at the GrowTogether conference each spring since 1984 to celebrate the start of the garden season with a day of learning, networking, and reconnecting with friends. Join us for the sixth, and final day, of Part I of this year's NYC Parks GreenThumb 38th Annual GreenThumb GrowTogether Conference. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the conference will be hybrid this year, and spread out over the course of two weeks. Part I takes place virtually from Saturday, February 19th to Friday, February 25th. You can register for the full conference or individual sessions, all free of cost, on Eventbrite. Part 2 will be in community gardens around the city in April 2022 (registration coming soon).

Friday, February 25:

  • Herbs for Getting in Touch with the Body and Skin
    Noon - 1:00 p.m.
    Vivian Mac (Willow's Touch)

Our skin surrounds our body, forming a protective barrier as well as a place of connection and contact with the world around us (including plants). During the winter, we might find ourselves with dry skin. In this workshop, we will learn how to work with herbs to physically and spiritually protect and connect with our bodies. We will learn how to make an herbal infused oil and salve. Through getting in touch with and resourcing our body, we connect with the earth body, plants, and others by extension.

Vivian Mac is a Spiritual Herbalist and the founder of Willow's Touch, which offers dream-inspired herbal remedies for being in touch with who you are, in order to heal yourself and take inspired action. She is a graduate of Sacred Vibes Spiritual Herbalism’s Apprenticeship and her intention is to share herbal remedies that inspire inner and outer transformation, for the benefit of self, community, and the Earth and all beings that live here.
  • Making Herbal-Infused Honey with Community
    6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
    Kelly Pacumio (Sacred Vibes Apothecary)

Honey is a sweet liquid made by bees using nectar from flowers. People throughout the world have hailed the benefits of honey for thousands of years. Believe it or not, honey can be even tastier by infusing it with herbs! In this workshop, we will learn about the medicinal properties of 3 herbs (Rose, Ginger, and Lavender) and how to make an herbal-infused honey. Making herbal-infused honeys are absolutely delicious and a great way to try out with kids, family, and friends, which can help us foster community connection with each other in a sweet and delicious way.

Kelly Pacumio is a Filipina Spiritual Herbalist and a Registered Nurse. She combines her knowledge of science and western medicine with the medicine of the earth and ancestral ways to help others towards wellness. She is also the founder of Maharlika, a herbal line that offers herbal remedies that are inspired by ancestral wisdom and healing. She is a graduate of Sacred Vibes Spiritual Herbalism’s Apprenticeship and will forever be a student of herbalism who continues to deeply be committed to help serve communities.

Before Central Park was built, the area from West 82nd to West 89th Street was home to Seneca Village, the largest community of African-American property owners in New York.

Discover Seneca Village, the largest community of free African-American property owners in pre–Civil War New York. On this tour, visitors will read the physical landscape of Seneca Village to understand the particular value it provided to Black New Yorkers seeking refuge from the crowded conditions and racial discrimination prevalent in early 19th Century NYC. Conservancy guides offer insight into this unique community and the events that resulted in the displacement of Seneca Village residents through the process of eminent domain for the construction of a new park.

Recommended for those interested in Black history, social history, NYC history, and/or archaeology.

In celebration of Black History Month, "The NYC Parks Renaming Project: Celebrating Black Leaders" highlights some of the parks and park features that the agency has recently renamed to honor the Black experience in New York City.

In June 2020, the agency pledged to demonstrate how it stands in solidarity with the Black community in its fight to combat systemic racism. Since then, Parks has named 28 parks spaces to acknowledge the legacies of Black Americans, encourage discourse about their contributions, and work to make the park system more diverse and reflective of the people it serves. The exhibition includes historical and contemporary photographs accompanied by texts detailing the park histories and biographies of the honored individuals.

The Arsenal Gallery is located at 64th Street and Fifth Avenue inside Central Park, Third Floor of the Arsenal Building. Gallery hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. (Closed Thursday, March 3 and Friday, March 4.) Admission is free. For further information please call (212) 360-8114.

By Ora Kemp, MPH, Director of Nutrition, NY Common Pantry.

Sowed from seeds of fertile grounds, sweat-drenched brows, and broken backs, the flavors of the American plate are seasoned with enslavement's bitterness. Salted with segregation and smoked in stacks of racial injustice, the hunger pangs that linger in the gut of Black and Brown folks has fully grown into an insatiable desire for change. The future of food equity will not be one carved by the unsavory nature of our past but inspired by the diversity of our people and the places and spaces that shape and nurture us. Join us as we explore the American plate and the flavors that define the future of food equity.

Join the NYC Parks Stewardship team and staff at the Greenbelt Native Plant Center to process beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata) for the upcoming spring season!

Ammophila is the dominant coastal grass in our region, helping to build and stabilize front dunes. Because the grass primarily spreads by rhizome, we harvest bare-root plant material from GNPC production plots to replant into dune restoration projects. Before planting, the stems must be cleaned and packaged. This process involves hand-stripping outer brown layers and excess roots, ensuring the viability of the green material and facilitating its replanting.

Volunteers should dress in clothes that can get dirty, close-toed shoes, and warm layers. Facemasks are required! Please note this event will occur inside of a greenhouse with room for social distancing, or outside if weather allows.

Join the NYC Parks Stewardship team and staff at John Dewey High School to process beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata) for the upcoming spring season!

Ammophila is the dominant coastal grass in our region, helping to build and stabilize front dunes. Because the grass primarily spreads by rhizome, we harvest bare-root plant material from the Greenbelt Native Plant Center's production plots to replant into dune restoration projects. Before planting, the stems must be cleaned and packaged. This process involves hand-stripping outer brown layers and excess roots, ensuring the viability of the green material and facilitating its replanting.

Join us for our first #VirtualPASS event of the year. This presentation will highlight the process of choreographer Kiera Bono’s 2021 PASS residency, including excerpts of recorded footage by Bono and collaborators.

Registration required

Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) is an ongoing archival process that oscillates between aestheticizing and de-aestheticizing daily maintenance movements. Tuning into mobility impairment, chronic illness, and physical therapy as choreographic resources, this practice began as an attempted collaboration between a stainless-steel plate, seven screws, and a distal radius from the time of their surgical fixation in April 2019 and has continued beyond the surgical removal of hardware in July 2020.

With attention to the materiality and temporality of disability, ORIF offers porous bones, rubber TheraBand resistance bars, accordion bellows, and strands of homemade pasta as dance partners in scores that stew in the blurriness between internal and external.

Conceived and choreographed by Kiera Bono. Collaborators: Laura Farrell, Alexander Enzo Hope, Simone Johnson, Yo-Yo Lin, Julia Lucrecia Taveras, and Ella Dawn W-S. Live captioning by Cory Dostie and ASL interpretation by SignNexus.

Kiera Bono is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Theatre and Performance program at The Graduate Center, CUNY; a Graduate Teaching Fellow at The City College of New York; and an interdisciplinary artist. Approaching biopolitical questions surrounding disability, queerness, food, and diaspora, their research explores performances of assimilation and resistance. Through multisensorial scores and choreographies of care, Bono maintains embodied and digital archives of labor, trauma, and relationality.
