Celebrate Juneteenth in Harlem with a free, outdoor screening of Oscar®-winning documentary Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised). In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary – part music film, part historical record – created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in summer 1969, just 100 miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was largely forgotten – until now.

Summer of Soul premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award. The film has swept the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards with wins in all six categories for which it was nominated, including Best Documentary Feature and Best Director. It has also won 46 awards across critics’ groups and guilds including DOC NYC, the AFI Special Award, LAFCA, AAFCA and NBR, and has earned an additional 43 nominations including the 94th Oscars®, 75th BAFTA Awards, DGA, Cinema Eye Honors, the GRAMMYS, IDA, PGA, NAACP, ACE, MPSE Golden Reel, among many others.

Summer of Soul secured Disney’s Onyx Collective’s first Academy Award® nomination, in partnership with Searchlight Pictures and Hulu. Summer of Soul is streaming on Hulu and Disney+, in conjunction with Disney General Entertainment’s Onyx Collective; Searchlight Pictures released it theatrically.

Screening of Joe Papp in Five Acts which tells the story of this indomitable, feisty, street-wise champion of the arts. As founder of The Public Theater, Free Shakespeare in the Park and producer of groundbreaking plays like Hair, A Chorus Line and for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf, Papp believed great art was for everyone, not just a privileged few. A cultural change agent for more than fifty years, Papp’s stages held up a mirror to society with work that reflected the reality of people’s lives.

Papp worked to expand public access to the arts. “We have public libraries,” he would argue, “Why not public theaters?” He recognized the role artists could play in building a more democratic, inclusive society. At a time when theatre was largely the domain of white men, he was convinced that women, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC and other marginalized communities, denied power elsewhere in society, could develop it on the stage. His goal was a “theater of inclusion” on-stage, backstage, and in the audience.

Featuring rare footage from the 50s to Papp's death in 1991, and up-close scenes from the performances themselves, Joe Papp in Five Acts tells his own story without narration. His great accomplishments and his own, often tumultuous, personal history is told by the artists he helped create—and, in some cases, tried to destroy—including actors Kevin Kline, James Earl Jones, Meryl Streep, Olympia Dukakis, Mandy Patinkin, Martin Sheen, Christopher Walken and playwrights Larry Kramer, and David Hare among others.

Directors Tracie Holder and Karen Thorsen will introduce the film.

Set during the 1970s punk rock revolution in London, the story follows a clever and creative young grifter named Estella, who is determined to become a successful designer. After Estella befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, the three build a life for themselves on the London streets. Before long, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute fashion legend, played by Emma Thompson (HOWARDS END, SENSE AND SENSIBILITY). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella."

Grab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park or playground! This summer, NYC Parks and The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs.

"The 13-year-old boy Luca Paguro finds himself in the beautiful seaside town of Portorosso on the Italian Riviera for the summer. There, he meets Alberto Scorfano, a fellow teenage boy, and together, they spend their days eating pasta, downing gelato, riding scooters, and going on endless adventures. Their fun, however, is constantly threatened by their fear of the townspeople finding out about their little secret: that they came from the depths of the sea."

Movies begin at dusk. This event is FREE and open to the public. Glass bottles and alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited. In the event of heavy rain or extreme weather, the screening may be canceled. The decision to cancel the event will be made prior to the screening and will be prominently posted on our website.

In Association with Rooftop Films and Disney Original Documentary

Doris Muñoz got her start in music guiding the careers of the next generation of Latinx artists, and founding Solidarity for Sanctuary, a non-profit that amplifies voices of immigrant communities through music, advocacy and the arts, including an annual concert that raises money for legal fees for the undocumented. As seen in the Disney Original Documentary Mija, Doris becomes a mentor to Mexican-American singer and songwriter Jacks Haupt. Hailing from Dallas, Jacks has redefined the pop-R&B sound with her nostalgic voice and magnifying sound. Fast forward to today, Doris has now emerged from behind-the-scenes to re-enter the music world as an artist herself while Jacks continues to represent a generation that exists across cultures, languages and genres through her music. The showcase will highlight performances from both Doris and Jacks as well as Helado Negro, whose space-age lullabies share an intensely private energy that draws you into his world; and Silvana Estrada, a Mexican singer-songwriter who paints tender portraits of lost love with her Venezuelan cuatro. The event will also feature a screening of Disney Original Documentary Mija, directed by Isabel Castro.
