Sq. Art 2013: Giuseppe Penone: "Ideas of Stone (Idee di pietra)"]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/10/10/mad-sq-art-2013-l-giuseppe-penone-ideas-of-stone-idee-di-pietra http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/10/10/mad-sq-art-2013-l-giuseppe-penone-ideas-of-stone-idee-di-pietra Date: October 10, 2013

New York—Madison Square Park Conservancy’s Mad. Sq. Art announces a new sculptural installation for fall 2013 by renowned Italian artist Giuseppe Penone, consisting of three monumental, 30-foot tall bronze trees. Ideas of Stone, featuring Penone’s signature manipulation of the trees’ natural forms, will interact with Madison Square Park’s lush landscape to highlight the relationships amongst man, sculpture and nature. The installation will remain on view daily from September 26, 2013 through February 9, 2014 in Madison Square Park.

Throughout his 40-year career, Penone has employed natural materials and forms in an exploration of the contrasting and fundamental relationships between man and nature. Penone was a member of the Italian Arte Povera movement, which was comprised of artists who sought to dissolve divisions between art and life by using commonplace subjects and materials in their work. Trees as living sculpture is a recurring theme for Penone. He often manipulates these natural forms by twisting, deconstructing, hollowing, and uprooting the organic figures. He incorporates traces of fingerprints, nails, wires, carvings, and precariously placed boulders as remnant evidence of the sculptures’ manmade composition and the effect of human interaction with the natural world. Penone addresses concepts of weight, balance, and scale, while merging the manmade and the organic.

President of the Madison Square Park Conservancy, Debbie Landau comments: “With this, the Park’s twenty-sixth exhibition of outdoor sculpture, we are honored to present Giuseppe Penone, an esteemed artist of international stature. Penone’s work may be best-known to European audiences, and the opportunity to display his towering bronze trees in New York is a tribute to his unique vision which complements the natural environment of the Park’s foliage as the seasons transition from fall to winter.”

Artist Giuseppe Penone states: “It is with great anticipation that I have planned for the exhibition of my work in Madison Square Park. A tree summarizes in an exemplary way the contrast between two forces: the force of gravity and the weight of life we are part of. The need and the search for balance, which exists in every living being to counteract the force of gravity, is evident in every step and in every small action of our lives. It is a river stone that appears amid the branches of a tree. A stone suspended amid the branches of a tree, separated from the soil by a structure that is not land and is not air, a stone that lies between the force of gravity and the force of the attraction of light.”

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Saturdays, Tuesday and Thursday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Rain and weather / air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are cancelled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. After years of being a gym rat, I've seen the light, so to speak. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

<![CDATA[Art Exhibition - Notched Bodies: Insects In Contemporary Art]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/10/10/art-exhibition-notched-bodies-insects-in-contemporary-art http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/10/10/art-exhibition-notched-bodies-insects-in-contemporary-art Date: October 10, 2013

This exhibition features eleven contemporary artists who offer probing personal interpretations on the importance of insects through a variety of media: Brandon Ballengée, Joianne Bittle, Rebecca Clark, Emilie Clark, Talia Greene, Asuka Hishiki, Julian Montague, Lisa Murch, Julia Oldham, Christy Rupp, and Ben Snead. The show is curated by Jennifer Lantzas, NYC Parks’ Public Art Coordinator.

This exhibition takes its name from ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle’s classification of insects by their similar traits: six legs and clearly segmented or “notched” bodies. Humans have had a long and complex relationship with insects. Their alien appearance can be jarring or off-putting, but upon closer inspection insects are works of art. They are often seen as pests or invaders; however, their critical role in our ecosystem and daily lives is increasingly clear as urban farming, gardening, and the impact of syndromes like Colony Collapse Disorder become prevalent. Insects are keen indicators of the health of our environment. They help break down and decompose rotting materials, which reintroduces rich nutrients into the soil. They are also the first line of defense against invasive plants and other harmful insects.

Located on the Arsenal lawn, Brandon Ballengée’s outdoor light installation creates interactions between nocturnal arthropods and humans. In the gallery, Joianne Bittle’s Goliath Beetle is removed from his natural surroundings and placed on a gold background, referencing religious icons from the Byzantine era. A botanic wallpaper installation by Talia Greene is inhabited by a colony of weaver ants, illustrating our vain attempts to impose order on the natural world. Faux books and records designed by Julian Montague document the hypothetical history of pest control. In her videos, Julia Oldham translates insects’ behaviors into choreographed performances. Ben Snead paints insects in geometric patterns—a personal classification system based on aesthetics rather than science. Rebecca Clark, Emilie Clark, Asuka Hishiki, Lisa Murch, and Christy Rupp also present diverse artworks that herald insects as fascinating creatures to be studied, understood and celebrated.

If you suffer migraines or back or neck pain, the instructor will advice you on the specific technique to alleviate the area of concern.

New trees were planted last spring at sites across all five boros. Just as important to planting trees is ensuring their long-term health and survival through stewardship. During October 8 – 16, volunteers, with the support of the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee and the NFL, will come out to all five boroughs and help take care of their neighborhood’s newest green asset—their growing forest. Volunteers will pull weeds, remove invasive vegetation, add mulch, and clean up any litter. The stewardship activities will culminate in the largest planting in one site to date on Saturday October 19, 2013 with 20,000 trees and 5,000 shrubs planted at Rockaway Community Park.

Experience the thrills and chills of the season with a garden full of intricately carved pumpkin sculptures, bugs, bats, parades, and more.

New this year: the Haunted Pumpkin Garden features creepy-creature encounters every weekend and the largest Spooky Nighttime Adventures trail ever!

Pumpkin sculptures of spooky scarecrows, frightening spiders, sneaky snakes, and more await discovery at every turn in the Everett Children's Adventure Garden. The display includes more than 500 intricately carved pumpkins that are sure to capture your youngster's imagination.

Every day kids can play inside a "gourd-geous" Pumpkin House, put on a scary show at the Pumpkin Puppet Theater, look for wiggly worms, and join a Halloween Parade, while every weekend offers even more treats.

Many plants, like the prickly pear cactus (Opuntia sp.) and Dioscorea elephantipes (elephant’s foot) aren aturally protected with weapon-worthy spines or a thick coating of armor. Others, such as Sagittaria, have names that allude to armor-like aspects of their anatomy.
