Join Wave Hill’s Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions. In the main gallery, (Not So) Still Life presents novel ways that contemporary artists are transforming the still life genre to engage with current culture. As a subject, the still life has remained popular since the early Renaissance, featuring compositions of natural and inanimate objects often presented with allegorical connotations. Today, artists are creating new variations by working in photography and sculpture to conflate interior space with landscape, or by using video and animation to convey still life in motion. Artists include Adam Brent, Elizabeth Bryant, Nicole Cohen, Ori Gersht, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Sue Johnson, Laura Letinsky, Beth Lipman, Erin O’Keefe,Donna Sharrett, Nicolas Touron, Michael Vahrenwald, Rodrigo Valenzuela and Alex Verhaest. In the Sunroom Project Space, Tai Hwa Goh explores the controlled natural environment of greenhouses, contemplating the intersection of the organic and the human-made realms.

The experienced boatbuilders of the Village Community Boathouse will lead volunteers in constructing a 14-foot-long Whitehall rowboat in Brooklyn Bridge Park's Community Room at 99 Plymouth. Named after the Lower Manhattan street that now ends at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, Whitehalls were the water taxis of their day, speedily ferrying passengers across the East River and to and from ships at anchor in the harbor. The shape and dimensions of this boat are drawn from a Whitehall built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1890.

Regular boatbuilding sessions will take place on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon until May 22. Spectators are more than welcome and volunteers are encouraged to join. No experience is necessary.

From prominent temple gardens in Kyoto to the tranquil stone oasis at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Shiro Nakane is keeping the art of the traditional Japanese garden alive. Favoring subdued assemblages of stones and greenery over lush florals, the Japanese garden is revered for its calm, meditative quality. Son of garden master Kinsaku Nakane, Shiro began studying the craft as a young boy and has been following in his father's footsteps ever since.

On April 21, Shiro comes to Japan Society to share his insights on Japanese garden design gained through a lifetime of work in the field.

Some people think that all insects are pests and are a threat to your garden plants but did you ever wonder if there might be insects that help the garden?

This workshop will uncover insects that play a critical role in the life cycles of your garden plants from those that pollinate your vegetable and fruit crops to others that prey on herbivores and other harmful insects.

Participants will be able to learn about the life cycles and biology of two particular species of beneficial insects and have an opportunity to take them to their gardens where they may be released.

Throughout five weekends in April and May, PIP committee members, New York Junior League volunteers, and external volunteers will spend a day in the park gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this well-loved park. We will provide you with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt. Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

Please RSVP if you are interested in participating in one or more park days. Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old. Volunteers ages 13 - 18 will require a parental consent form.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project
For 25 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend cleanup days include landscaping and repairing the parks. We work with over 700 volunteers each season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community.

For more information or to sign up, please email info@villagecommunityboathouse.org or register here.

Quiet like a mountain, moving like a river, Tai Chi is a sequence of gentle movements based on images found in nature. In this beginner level class, Irving Yee, a member of the William CC Chen Tai Chi School, introduces students to the internal martial arts, and promotes an awareness of its health benefits.

Students split into groups according to their level of expertise, exploring movements at their own pace, whether as beginners or as more advanced students of Tai Chi.

Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and a fun way to reduce stress. Regardless of the intensity level, it is a great way to burn calories and stay fit.

Our Urban Park Ranger hiking guides will introduce you to the hidden gems of New York City parks. On our nature hikes, you can take an hour to unplug from the world and immerse yourself in the wonders of nature.

Vigorous hikes may include walking long distances, with hills and rugged terrain. For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.
