This spring, the Public Theater’s Mobile Unit will tour Shakespeare’s timeless tale of Romeo and Juliet to communities across New York City, including many NYC Parks locations. In some of the most romantic language ever written for the stage, young Romeo and Juliet become fortune’s fools when the ancient grudge between their families forces them to sacrifice all for the chance to be together. Obie Award winner Lear de Bessonet directs the classic tale of star-crossed lovers caught between the world outside the bedroom window and passion as boundless as the sea.

The Public Theater’s mission to make theater accessible to all, as exemplified by free Shakespeare in the Park, is expanded upon by the Mobile Unit, which strengthens community engagement with the arts by bringing free, world-class productions of Shakespeare to recreation centers, correctional facilities, homeless shelters, social advocacy organizations, and other places of community gathering in all five boroughs.

Each winter, Wave Hill opens Glyndor Gallery as workspace for New York-area artists, giving them the unique opportunity to explore the winter landscape as a source of inspiration. Artists share aspects of their practice and engagement with Wave Hill through hands-on workshops. Workshops begin in Glyndor Gallery with an introduction to the artist’s work, then continue in the Ecology Building or Wave Hill House for the creative activity.

During the Winter Workspace, Sindy Butz will continue research on two video projects, one that is focused on the Palisades and the other on 11th-century German nun St. Hildegard von Bingen and her medicinal study of rocks and botanicals. This workshop will encourage the examination of two very different histories and traditions, providing participants with the opportunity to learn about Saint Hildegard of Bingen, and Butoh, a meditative Japanese dance form that involves very slow, intense movements. Learn more about Butoh and practice guided imagery and meditative movement techniques that Sindy Butz uses in her own art performances and training. In celebration of the vernal equinox, end a cold winter with joy and make the transition into spring with consciousness, then enjoy a cup of tea from a recipe inspired by Saint Hildegard.

Visitors ages 12 and over are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Newcomers and practicing artists alike are welcome.

Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the Park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.

Highlights of this tour include McGowan's Pass, Fort Clinton, Nutter's Battery, and the Harlem Meer.

The tour route involves many hills and stairs, and some uneven terrain. Tour starts at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (inside the park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues), and ends near the park perimeter at 106th Street and Fifth Avenue.

For weather cancellation and other ticket policies, please review the Central Park Conservancy's policies carefully.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” The installation consists of previously and newly acquired works, all from the original Gracie Mansion period, which have been curated to create a more historically accurate picture of life in New York City during the time of Gracie Mansion’s construction.

To RSVP for tour, please go to: on.nyc.gov/gracietour.

Currently, Gracie Mansion is not offering group tours. If you are part of a private organization that would like to tour the house, please email your request, including the size of group, your name and the purpose of a tour, to gracieinfo@cityhall.nyc.gov, and we will work to add you to one of the currently scheduled tours.

Great Outdoors showcases over thirty artworks from the Museum of American Illustration’s collection that depict the vast indulgences of outdoor life, including recreational sports, ice skating, biking, and quiet contemplation. The show features illustrations originally published in books, magazines and weeklies from the Golden Age of Illustration (1880-1920) through 2014.
