Three of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies are produced by the irreverent, surprising, and critically acclaimed The Drilling Company: Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It with music by Natalie Smith, and Measure for Measure. The plays feature the greatest, funniest, and noblest women of the canon—Beatrice, Rosalind, and Isabella—remarkable characters who, with close connections to other women, master true love and overcome misogyny and sexual harassment.

Throughout five weekends in April and May, PIP committee members, New York Junior League volunteers, and external volunteers will spend a day in the park gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this well-loved park. We will provide you with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt. Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

Please RSVP if you are interested in participating in one or more park days. Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old. Volunteers ages 13 - 18 will require a parental consent form.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project
For 25 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend cleanup days include landscaping and repairing the parks. We work with over 700 volunteers each season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community.

The experienced boatbuilders of the Village Community Boathouse will lead volunteers in constructing a 14-foot-long Whitehall rowboat in Brooklyn Bridge Park's Community Room at 99 Plymouth. Named after the Lower Manhattan street that now ends at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, Whitehalls were the water taxis of their day, speedily ferrying passengers across the East River and to and from ships at anchor in the harbor. The shape and dimensions of this boat are drawn from a Whitehall built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1890.

Regular boatbuilding sessions will take place on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon until May 22. Spectators are more than welcome and volunteers are encouraged to join. No experience is necessary.

Join NYC Parks for Brooklyn Recreation Arts Partners Pop-Up Gallery!

Meet Brooklyn artist Iris Ward Loughran, at Brooklyn Recreation Arts Pop-Up Gallery. The exhibit features Loughran's oil painting series, Visual Pollution: MTA Ad Defacement. The series was inspired by altered or vandalized New York City subway ads.

Iris Ward Loughran is a Brooklyn-based artist, urbanist, and organizer. Her work has been presented at Greenpoint Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), Art Party, (New York, NY), Mandeville Annex Gallery (La Jolla, CA), ADDO (San Diego, CA), and Art-Fist Collective (San Diego, CA), among others.

Artist Statement
Recognizing that this (damaged ads) can be a form of street art, and individuals can manipulate ads to form whole new meanings, the defacement is taken out of context allowing the viewer to see the vandalism in a whole new light. The actual advertisement, or what some urbanists refer to as visual pollution, is taken out of the image, and we are left with the surprisingly beautiful, painterly defacements.

Join Wave Hill’s Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions.

In the main gallery, (Not So) Still Life presents novel ways that contemporary artists are transforming the still-life genre to engage with current culture. As a subject, the still life has remained popular since the early Renaissance, featuring compositions of natural and inanimate objects often presented with allegorical connotations. Today, artists are creating new variations by working in photography and sculpture to combine interior space with landscape, or by using video and animation to convey still life in motion. Artists include Adam Brent, Elizabeth Bryant, Nicole Cohen, Ori Gersht, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Sue Johnson, Laura Letinsky, Beth Lipman, Erin O’Keefe,Donna Sharrett, Nicolas Touron, Michael Vahrenwald, Rodrigo Valenzuela and Alex Verhaest.

In the Sunroom Project Space, Tai Hwa Goh explores the controlled natural environment of greenhouses, contemplating the intersection of the organic and the human-made realms.

This spring, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) of the New York Junior League invites you to join them in rolling up your sleeves to help revitalize Marcus Garvey Park.

Come discuss plans for the future of one of New York's oldest houses, the John Bowne House in Flushing, Queens, built in 1661. Volunteering on behalf of the Bowne House Historical Society, students from St. John's University will lead two tours at 1:30 p.m. and again at 3:30 p.m. One tour will focus on how the house changed over time with the addition of utilities and other modern conveniences. Visitors can view the contents of a "forgotten" cistern revealed during archaeological excavation. A second tour will focus on the landscape, and discuss the once sprawling boundaries of the Bowne property. Special attention will be given to the surrounding neighborhood and Flushing's history as a center for nursery plants and trees.

This program is being held in recognition of the beginning of National Historic Preservation Month in May, and in support of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's “This Place Matters” initiative.
