Musical Ecologies continues with composer and media artist David Linton. Active in New York City since the late 1970s, Linton is known for his experimental mixed-media performances and installations.

For this performance he will present Citharodeo, a new work for electric guitar that approaches the instrument as “a spatially embedded vibrating medium.” Using extended techniques, non-traditional tunings and rich signal processing, the performance will animate the unique acoustics of the Great Room at the Old Stone House.

GrowTogether with us for Earth Week at Part 2 of the 38th Annual GreenThumb GrowTogether Conference! iNaturalist is a community/citizen science platform where anyone can record their observations – photos or audio recordings – of any living thing anywhere in the world. Community gardeners and visitors can use iNaturalist to document and keep records about their gardens, such as flowering and fruiting times; identify and keep track of common weeds; and identify insect visitors, whether pests, predators, or pollinators.

In this workshop, we will use iNaturalist “in the field” to make observations of plants and insects and upload them to iNaturalist, creating a record of the biodiversity in a community garden. If you have access to a smartphone, please download the iNaturalist app in advance and bring it to the workshop!

Join the Wyckoff House Museum for a special Earth Day Farm Volunteering Day! Volunteering will take place in two shifts from noon to 2:00 p.m. (processing food scraps and compost) and 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (General spring garden clean up).

We will provide tools, hand sanitizer, and masks for those who need them. Upon arrival, we will review important tool safety information. We recommend that volunteers dress with layers in clothing suitable for outdoor work and durable boots or sneakers, and bring a refillable water bottle, and snacks.

Schedule:

Noon - 2:00 p.m. – Processing food scraps and compost
2:00 p.m - 4:00 p.m. – General spring garden clean up

Planning your visit:

  • Prepare to get dirty! Dress for the mess by wearing proper outdoor work attire (hat, warm layers, rain gear, gardening gloves, closed-toed shoes, etc.).
  • Bring a water bottle. We will have a water refilling station available.
  • Bring snacks/lunch with you (there are limited food options in the area).
  • Tasks are often physically strenuous, and can include weeding, mulching, turning compost, or harvesting, depending on the needs of the farm that day.
  • We welcome volunteers ages 13 & older.

GrowTogether with us for Earth Week at Part 2 of the 38th Annual GreenThumb GrowTogether Conference! Studies have shown that there are similarities between the soil rhizosphere (near the roots of plants) and the human intestine. This means there are direct connections between the life in the soil and the life in our own gut flora. The act of taking the scraps of food you leave and feeding it to the earth is foundational to our well-being. Food for you is food for the earth. By understanding simple recipes to feed the earth, you can invite microorganisms in the earth to thrive.

Join Prospect Park Alliance for a fun and festive day in the park—we’ve got a lot to celebrate! It’s Earth Day, the Prospect Park Audubon Center’s 20th Anniversary, and the birthday of two legends: naturalist John James Audubon, and… the 200th anniversary of the birth of landscape architect and Prospect Park’s creator, Frederick Law Olmsted!

Learn more about Olmsted’s important work by viewing select panels from Frederick Law Olmsted: Landscapes for the Public Good, an exhibit that focuses on his life story, major landscape commissions, and their relevance to contemporary society. This exhibit, which will be up through Labor Day, was created as part of a partnership with the National Association for Olmsted Parks, the Olmsted 200 campaign, and the Oak Spring Garden Foundation. Take a virtual tour of the entire exhibit.

Celebrate with activities for all ages that celebrate the historic and environmental importance of Prospect Park, Brooklyn’s slice of nature and home to a thriving ecosystem of hundreds of species of plants and animals, 30,000 trees, and Brooklyn’s only lake and last remaining forest.

Join Prospect Park Alliance and Turnstile Tours on Frederick Law Olmsted’s 200th birthday with a special tour celebrating his two New York City masterpieces — Prospect Park and Central Park.

Prospect Park’s Turnstile Tours guides will be joined by guides from Central Park to explore Olmsted’s unique vision and legacy while comparing and contrasting the two parks and what they tell us about his evolution as a designer over the decade separating their construction. Built in different geographical and political contexts, Prospect Park and Central Park share many similar structures hallmarks — varied terrain and meandering paths to spark curiosity and grand vistas to inspire awe — that speak to Olmsted’s lasting influence on landscape design and public space, elements we continue to appreciate and benefit from today.

Tours will be held on Saturday, April 23, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 24, from 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
