Please note: Due to rain, tonight's performance of the festival will take place at NYU’s Frederick Loewe Theatre, 35 West 4th Street, at 8 p.m.

Music Director Lutz Rath has announced the 58th season of the Washington Square Music Festival, taking place Tuesdays in June at Washington Square Park. The Festival is under the auspices of the Washington Square Association, Inc. Seating is first-come, first-served.

The New York Jazzharmonic, Ron Wasserman leader
Enjoy an evening of classic jazz, featuring the first performance of a work by Fred Hellerman, co-founder in 1948, with Pete Seeger, of The Weavers, a group that launched American’s folk music revival. Fred is the only surviving member of The Weavers. Fred Hellerman’s “Fourths of July” was composed in 1987 and was never performed. The piece was originally scored for symphony orchestra, but is being re-orchestrated by Ron Wasserman for a jazz orchestra instrumentation.

The Washington Square Music Festival is made possible with public funding through Councilmember Margaret Chin and The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency. Generous grants from The Earle K. & Katherine F. Moore Foundation, The Horace Goldsmith W. Foundation, Washington Square Association, Music Performance Trust Fund, The Margaret Neubart Foundation Trust, New York University Community Affairs & NYU Community Fund, Salamon-Abrams Family Fund, Three Sheets/Off the Wagon/Down the Hatch, Con Edison, and the Washington Square Park Conservancy, are deeply appreciated, as is invaluable help from NYC Parks & Recreation.

The School of Jazz at The New School, founded in 1986, is one of the most influential institutions of its kind. The quality and uniqueness of the school lie in its artist-as-mentor approach to learning, its progressive curriculum, small ensemble-based performance, a stellar faculty composed of artist-practitioners, and our access to unique musical opportunities throughout New York City.

Catch some of the city’s grooviest acts for an evening of tunes that will get you moving! This summer, Brooklyn Bodega brings some of New York’s most exciting musicians to Pier 1 for our Bridge Grooves music series.

On July 20, PitchBlak Brass Band joins Maurice “Mobetta” Brown and DJ OP! for a concert that’s sure to get you out of your seat!

PitchBlak Brass Band, a Brooklyn based, Hip-Hop infused ten-piece brass band, marries the sounds of tubas, trombones, saxophones and other typically non-hip-hop instruments in the spirit of The Roots and some of rap’s iconic live bands, to deliver an energy that samples, loops and breakbeats can’t always capture.

DJ OP! is a founding member of the heralded I Love Vinyl Party and a co-partner of the long established Afrokinetic party in NYC. As a purveyor of all things soulful, OP!’s sets include hip-hop, r&b, reggae, pop, rock, and classics to house, future soul, and various electronic genres from the UK and musical flavors from Africa.

Head to Pier 1 at 7pm to grab a spot on Harbor View Lawn and enjoy the sunset, the view, and of course, the music!

About the Artists

Carte Blanche Performance is a Brooklyn-based contemporary dance company that creates sensual, joyful works in nontraditional spaces, inviting the audience to permeate the performer's space.

The Dance Cartel proposes a new dance experience: with an extreme-dance emphasis on endurance and technical rigor, they employ the social nature of dance and the sharpness of a music video to create a fresh, vibrant and inclusive dance community.

Jordan Eagles is a New York based artist who preserves, encases, layers and suspends blood, which he then illuminates. The materials and luminosity in his bodies of work relate to themes of life, death, spirituality, science and equality.

Merche Blasco is an interdisciplinary artist and composer whose practice includes building instruments for electronic music performance, orchestrating participatory sound performances in public spaces, and electroacoustic improvisation.

Rob Roth is a multiplatform and multimedia artist and director. He uses theater, film, audio, and performance to create richly textured, lyrical and mysterious works with a critical eye on our culture.

Yael Acher "KAT" Modiano is a multi-genre flutist, composer, and educator. She works as a soloist and bandleader within classical, contemporary, and Jazz, and creating live soundtracks for films and dance

Ursula Scherrer is a Swiss multimedia and video artist living in New York City. She transforms spaces and landscapes into serene, abstract portraits of rhythm, color and light.

Join the Fort Tryon Park Trust, NYC Parks, and the Michels family in honoring the late Council Member Stan Michels at the eighth annual Memorial Jazz Concert. Enjoy live jazz by local impresario Marjorie Eliot and her ensemble underneath the majestic elms on the promenade, alongside the beautiful Heather Garden and overlooking the Hudson River.

Stan Michels represented Northern Manhattan in the City Council for 24 years from 1978 through 2001. He was chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection, and his legislative record was notable for his work fighting on behalf of tenants for the expansion of the city’s recycling program, for the protection of our water supply and cleaner air, and against childhood lead poisoning, smoking in public places, and unreasonable noise. He was also a steadfast advocate for parks, allocating over $50 million for park improvements in Washington Heights, Inwood, and Harlem, including virtually every playground in his district. The promenade where this concert is being held was named in his honor shortly before he passed away on August 1, 2008.

We hope you can be with us to remember Stan on the eighth anniversary of his passing.

This program will be accessible to people with disabilities.
