The Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. Since then, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin.

Join us to explore this incredible natural resource in the heart of NYC.

Over the course of the 1800s, weddings in New York City evolved from intimate private ceremonies to large, lavish affairs. This exhibition explores the changes in wedding customs as the 19th century progressed, including the trousseau, printed invitations, and the giving of gifts.

Highlights include Eliza Tredwell’s 1820 empire-style embroidered cotton wedding dress and Sarah Ann Tredwell’s 1872 silk bridal dress made in Paris, the highest fashion of the post-Civil War bustle period. Accessories include silk wedding boots, and earrings, corsage, and headpiece of wax orange blossoms.

Our trained Urban Park Rangers will lead you on canoe adventures that range from the gentle waters of protected lakes to the challenging open waters of rivers and bays. All canoe programs are for ages 8 years and older. Participation in a manadatory safety review led by a trained Ranger is requied.

This basic canoeing program is great for all skill levels. First-come, first-served. The line to participate may close prior to 2:00 p.m. due to demand.

It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

Meet and greet the artists of the Bronx Photographers Collaborative as they discuss their new work, Capturing the Bronx!

The Bronx is a place and a metaphor, defined by its diversity and a peninsula in a city of islands. It is home to massive public housing developments, neighborhoods of six-story apartment buildings and private homes, and bucolic landscapes. Through these images, we are creating a photographic archive of the Bronx and documenting, celebrating and advocating for the borough that means so much to us and has contributed so much to who we are.

Avifauna: Birds + Habitat features artworks that delve into the relationship between birds and their habitats—from the role birds play in propagating plants to changes in how natural and built environments affect migration patterns. Artists working in photography, video, artist books, wall painting, installation, drawing and sound include Tatiana Arocha, Tanya Chaly, Marna Chester, Nina Katchadourian, Paula McCartney, Jeff Mertz, Peter Morgan, Sarah Nicholls, James Prosek, Jenna Spevackand Fred Tomaselli.

In the Sunroom Project Space, Austin Ballard’s installation Rumorsis on view. Fabricating furniture using cane webbing and epoxy clay, Austin Ballard constructs an immersive domestic setting. Intended as functional sculpture, the forms are reminiscent of Victorian furniture and recall Wave Hill’s history as a private home.

The Studio Museum in Harlem and NYC Parks invite you to join us in celebration of Maren Hassinger: Monuments. In Monuments, the eight sculptures on view respond to the landscape of Marcus Garvey Park. Hassinger considers the natural environment a site of hope and potential, a place of equality, where humanity has a shared purpose of stewardship and understanding. According to Hassinger, "Within nature, we are equal." Monuments transforms Marcus Garvey Park into a space both physical and psychological and prompts the audience to consider the place of nature in their lives. Each of the eight sculptures is meant to provide a contemplative moment, one that invites multiple responses that call forth memories or associations for those who encounter them.

Maren Hassinger: Monuments is a public art initiative presented by The Studio Museum in Harlem in partnership with NYC Parks. Site-specific artworks are on view throughout Marcus Garvey Park from June 16, 2018, to June 10, 2019. This event is open to all, but RSVPs are encouraged.

This is an introduction overview to Oregon State University's (OSU) "Introduction to Permaculture Design", a free online long distance learning college course. After this workshop you will be fully familiarized with the fundamental concepts and have hands on practice before taking the full introduction curriculum online. We will provide all study and learning materials to prepare you for OSU's Course taught by Andrew Millison.

In this introduction we will explain what defines permaculture designs basics, including its ethics based philosophies and principles, and how permaculture uses nature as a guide to learn from and inform its decision making matrix.

After the morning class, we will rework Genesis into its transition period towards permaculture by:

  • Addressing its needs
  • Developing soil systems
  • Different composting practices
  • Water harvesting and irrigation
  • Bio-remediation while applying permaculture principles to each task in the garden on an ongoing basis each week and throughout the year

Please pack a lunch if you wish or a bodega and a supermarket are nearby.

Now, visitors can use the rustic trail to view native plantings that attract birds and other wildlife. Join our guides for this exclusive tour of the Hallett Nature Sanctuary, one of the most magical places in the Park.

Astoria Park Alliance is excited to host this brand new Father’s Day event along the East River. The community is invited to walk down Shore Boulevard aka “The Strip” exploring dozens of classic cars from around the region. Park-goers of all ages are encouraged to meet the car owners and learn more about their vehicles.

Food and craft vendors will stretch along Shore Blvd., accompanied by live music and family activities. Classic car owners will have their vehicles professionally judged in a variety of categories, with trophy presentations on stage to conclude the event.

Award winning singer-songwriter D.B. Rielly will be featured on the main stage. Rielly and his band will perform two sets of their wide-ranging collection of American roots music, including zydeco, blues, and country.

Featured vendors that include The Breakfast Shack, Bench Flour Bakers, Astor Apiaries and HellGate Farm will offer refreshments as well as last minute Father’s Day gifts.

Astoria Park, with its gorgeous views of Manhattan, has a long history of being a magnet for car and motorcycle enthusiasts. Walk the strip on any given day and you are likely to run into proud vehicle owners parked along the riverside showing off their rides and enjoying the view. The Father’s Day Classic Car Show aims to embrace the past, while looking to the future.

Participating classic cars will enter the site for registration prior to the event from the corner of Ditmars Boulevard and Shore Boulevard.

Please note: While the event is free to the public there is a $15 entry fee for each vehicle. Car owners interested in entering their vehicles in the Father’s Day Classic Car Show are encouraged to contact Astoria Park Alliance by email at getinvolved@astoriaparkalliance.org for more details.

The car show is made possible with sponsorship support from Old Astoria Neighborhood Association.

Attendees are encouraged to RSVP on Facebook and Eventbrite.

Village Community Boathouse is offering free Community Rowing in our fleet of Whitehall Gigs. No experience is necessary though rowing does require some physical dexterity.

Community Rowing events are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds on site.

Please note: The rows last, depending on river conditions and crew experience, between one and three hours. Please arrive on-time as the crews will be assigned before 1:00 p.m. Bring extra water, a hat, and sunscreen as you will be rowing outdoors in the hot sun. Rowing is weather dependent and will be canceled for high winds, rain, or thunderstorms. All participants must sign a waiver and be able to climb a ladder.
