Join NYC Parks and the New York City Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment for a free film! This movie is held outdoors.

Viva Las Vegas, one of Elvis Presley's most popular vehicles, adheres as rigidly to formula as a Kabuki dance. Elvis plays a race-car driver competing in the Las Vegas Grand Prix opposite his principal rival, Cesare Danova. To finance his entry, Elvis takes a job as a casino waiter. Naturally, he is occasionally prevailed upon to sing, making one wonder why he didn't choose this talent as a means of making some quick cash. As always, Elvis chases all the wrong girls, only to ignore the "right" one, portrayed by Ann-Margret in her considerable youthful prime.

Teenaged Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) is a legend in his own time thanks to his uncanny skill at cutting classes and getting away with it. Intending to make one last grand duck-out before graduation, Ferris calls in sick, "borrows" a Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day bacchanal through the streets of Chicago. Dogging Ferris' trail at every turn is high-school principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), determined to catch Bueller in the act of class-cutting. Writer/director John Hughes once again tries to wed satire, slapstick, and social commentary, as Ferris Bueller's Day Off starts like a house afire and goes on to make "serious" points about status-seeking and casual parental cruelties. It brightens up considerably in the last few moments, when Ferris' tattletale sister (Jennifer Grey) decides to align herself with her merry prankster sibling.

Come to Van Cortlandt House Museum this summer and embark on an adventure back in time at our Summer History Camp. Your child will learn about the Van Cortlandt family’s and New York City’s important roles in the formation of our country all while having fun.

Campers are immersed in the everyday life of a child in 18th century as they wear period clothing, and make and play 18th century toys and games. Typical chores such as churning butter, cooking, gathering wood, and hauling water are all part of the full History Camp experience.

Children will also travel in time back to the early years of the Revolutionary War and experience the life of a soldier in General George Washington’s army. They will lend a hand with pitching tents and setting up camp. “Enlistment” in the army, military drill, and reconnaissance, are also part of the action.

Camp is lead by Van Cortlandt House Museum’s professional staff, talented living history volunteers, and college students studying material culture and art education. Daily activities for Adventures in Time Summer History Camp are designed in keeping with New York State fourth grade curriculum standards and are appropriate for children ages six to 12.

Adventures in Time Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed second, third, fourth, and fifth grade (or the equivalent) in the spring of 2016. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Van Cortlandt House Museum is owned by NYC Parks, operated by The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York, and is a member of The Historic House Trust of New York City.

This photo exhibit is the result of a "people to people" cultural exchange in which the artist participated last October. The artist and group visited Havana, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad. Music and art were everywhere and the crumbling Spanish architecture made for some interesting images. The various images convey his impressions of Cuba and the Cuban people in an apolitical manner. The recent presidential visit and talk of lifting the embargo lend context to the images.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Emerging Music Festival returns for its second year with five on-the-rise New York-based bands performing on one of the biggest stages of their young careers.

Thousands of music lovers pack the beautiful Bryant Park lawn for the city's best new music, including indie rock, soul, R&B, singer-songwriter, and funk. Between sets, attendees can play a variety of giant lawn games, learn to juggle, and purchase food and beverages from celebrated local vendors.

Grab a blanket and some friends, and come for a beautiful, music-filled summer night on the Lawn. No tickets are required.

Lineup

5:00 p.m. - Gemma
The New York Times describes R&B/electronic duo Gemma as “a silky, poppy new project with plenty of open space, mid-'80s R&B hooks and gently skittering beats.” Their vibe pairs perfectly with a sun-soaked, chill session on the Bryant Park Lawn.

6:00 p.m. - Odetta Hartman
Indie songwriter Odetta Hartman delivers a “mix of ethereal folk, rootsy rock, and glitchy electronics, all anchored by her powerful voice” (Brooklyn Vegan)

7:00 p.m. - Mikaela Davis
A harpist and songwriter who turns out “tuneful pop songs that showcase not only her highly proficient harp technique, but also attractive vocals that sound both vulnerable and assured” (Boston Globe)

8:00 p.m. - Acid Dad
After the sun goes down, we turn it up with psych-punk band Acid Dad, who deliver a “blistering live set that’s not easy to forget” (Consequence of Sound)

9:00 p.m. - EMEFE
Get ready to dance out the end of the festival with Afrobeat inspired funk band EMEFE, who the Village Voice described as a blend of “Fela Kuti–inspired Afrobeat with dashes of Prince- and David Byrne–channeling pop orchestration.”

Bring a blanket, chair and friends and enjoy movies outdoors.

George Lucas produced and Jim Henson directed this gothic fantasy which pits living and breathing actors Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie (who, along with Trevor Jones, provides the film's music) against a motley collection of Muppet monsters. The film centers upon teenage Sarah (Connelly), who lives in a fantasy world of myth and magic, evil spells, and wondrous enchantment. She is baby-sitting her little brother when she cavalierly wishes that goblins would take him away. She gets her wish, and a coterie of goblins abduct him. She then encounters Jareth (David Bowie), the ruler of a mystical world one step removed from reality. He tells Sarah that the only way to get her brother back is to find her way through a M.C. Escher-like labyrinth and find the castle at the center. As she makes her way through the maze, she faces a number of horrific challenges (like the Bog of Eternal Stench) before she finds her way to the gravity-defying castle, where her brother is being held by the evil goblins.

In case of rain, the event moves indoors.

Sam Neill returns as Dr. Alan Grant, a scientist who's tricked by wealthy couple Paul and Amanda Kirby (William H. Macy and Tea Leoni) into a fly-over of Isla Sorna. The object of their sightseeing tour is one of the Costa Rican islands populated by ferocious, genetically bred dinosaurs and the "site B" setting of Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World (1997). After their plane crash-lands, it's revealed that the Kirbys are actually seeking their teenage son, lost on the island after a paragliding accident. Trapped on Isla Sorna, Grant and his companions discover some painful truths the hard way. Rated PG-13.

"Grease," said the poster and the Barry Gibb song, "is the word." Transferring its setting from Chicago to sunny California, and adding a dash of disco to the ersatz '50s score, producer Allan Carr and director Randal Kleiser turned this long-running Jim Jacobs-Warren Casey Broadway smash into the biggest blockbuster of 1978. 1950s teens Danny (John Travolta) and Australian transfer Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) spend their "Summer Nights" falling in love, but once fall comes, it's back to Rydell High and its cliques. As one of the bad-boy T-Birds, Danny has to act cool for best pal Kenickie (Jeff Conaway) and their leather-clad mates Sonny (Michael Tucci) and Doody (Barry Pearl, in the role Travolta played on-stage). Despite befriending Frenchy (Didi Conn), one of the rebel Pink Ladies, virginal Sandy is "too pure to be Pink," as the Ladies' leader, Rizzo (Stockard Channing), acidly observes. Declaring their devotion in such ballads as "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "Sandy," Sandy and Danny split, reconcile, and split again amidst a pep rally, dances, drive-ins, and a drag race, before deciding "You're the One That I Want" at the climactic carnival. With Travolta white-hot from Saturday Night Fever (1977), Grease soundtrack singles climbed the charts and summer movie crowds poured in.

Set in 1989, this iconic Spike Lee film unfolds on the hottest day of the year in Bed-Stuy when a community member Buggin' Out (Giancarlo Esposito), goes into a local pizzeria and sees that the Wall of Fame exhibits only Italian actors. He feels that a pizzeria in a black neighborhood should showcase black actors, but Sal (Danny Aiello) disagrees. The wall becomes a symbol of racism and hate to the neighborhood, causing tensions to rise and challenging everyone to "do the right thing". The film features a stellar cast including Samuel L. Jackson, Rosie Perez, John Turturro, John Savage, Spike Lee, the legedary Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market is opening for its eighth season of healthy food, activities, education, and food justice programming.

This year, the market will continue to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. We have also worked feverishly to improve the environment and delivery of services to market shoppers through strategic improvements in the physical infrastructure and by partnering with The Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation to increase our local visibility and foot traffic in the markets. That partnership will offer us additional market days at sister market sites in the immediate community, and to host several cultural festivals in the market and garden, author readings in the childrens garden, bike tours which complement our natural programming, and increase advertising and promotions of both markets.

The Large Market will continue its Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains at the newly-improved cooking island area in September; offer eggs and herbs for sale from the Hattie Carthan chicken coops and new herbal farm, and will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, eggs, and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs—The Mixed Basket weekly Program and Institutional Basket Program.

Randall's Island has a rich, unique and varied history. Randall's Island Park Alliance’s staff loves nothing more than to share this fascinating history with interested visitors. Two colossal bridges, both the largest of their kind when completed, span the island, which was once three separate land masses; these were combined by Robert Moses through landfill in the mid-1900s.
