In 1998, Van Cortlandt Park was designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) in New York State by National Audubon. About 230 different bird species have been recorded in Van Cortlandt Park and over 60 species breed here, as determined by the 2006 Breeding and Migrating Bird Census Project in Van Cortlandt Park—a study of an Important Bird Area conducted by NYC Audubon. Breeders include the great-horned owl, eastern wood-pewee, great crested flycatcher, northern rough-winged swallo, and rose-breasted grosbeak with the American robin and the gray catbird, being the most populous breeding species.

Former danseur with Ballet de Puerto Rico, Ernesto Camacho will present his debut exhibition, “Dreams of Color,” throughout the month. "Dreams of Color" is an exhibition that celebrates dancers of color, in the world of ballet.

Ballet has been seen, for the most part, with dancers of one hue. Within the last few decades, a crop of new dancers has introduced the beauty of diversity in one of the world’s most beautiful and powerful art forms, ballet.

Ernesto has exhibited at various galleries in New York City and Connecticut. He has won awards throughout the years including, the 15th Annual Brio Award, from the Bronx Council on The Arts, and First Prize in Bohemia Beers Kahlo Challenge, in which his painting became part of Bohemia Beer’s permanent collection. His paintings have appeared in newspapers and magazines such as the New York Times, Manhattan Arts International, Manhattan Times, the Advocate, and the Greenwich Times.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market is opening for its eighth season of healthy food, activities, education, and food justice programming.

This year, the market will continue to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. We have also worked feverishly to improve the environment and delivery of services to market shoppers through strategic improvements in the physical infrastructure and by partnering with The Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation to increase our local visibility and foot traffic in the markets. That partnership will offer us additional market days at sister market sites in the immediate community, and to host several cultural festivals in the market and garden, author readings in the childrens garden, bike tours which complement our natural programming, and increase advertising and promotions of both markets.

The Large Market will continue its Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains at the newly-improved cooking island area in September; offer eggs and herbs for sale from the Hattie Carthan chicken coops and new herbal farm, and will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, eggs, and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs—The Mixed Basket weekly Program and Institutional Basket Program.

Quiet like a mountain, moving like a river, Tai Chi is a sequence of gentle movements based on images found in nature.

In this multi-level class, Irving Yee, a member of the William CC Chen Tai Chi School, introduces students to the internal martial arts, and promotes an awareness of its health benefits. Students split into groups according to their level of expertise, exploring movements at their own pace, whether as beginners or as more advanced students of Tai Chi.

Please arrive on time; late-comers will not be admitted once the class begins. Sessions take place outdoors, weather permitting, with an indoor location in case of rain or humidity.

Throughout history, scarecrows have been the guardians of gardens. Sculptor and artist Ray Villafane returns to New York Botanical Garden to create an original installation that explores the evolution of the scarecrow in the United States, from its everyday role in agriculture to its status as a cultural icon in films and comic books.

This art display, presented by the Tri State Cadillac Dealers, features larger-than-life sculptures crafted from natural materials and set amidst the Garden’s landscape.

Explore the detailed display during the day, discover its surprises after dark, and enjoy special experiences on select dates from Cadillac.

This season, the Public Theater's Mobile Unit presents a new, world-class production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet to audiences and community venues across New York City. Olivier Award winner Chukwudi Iwuji (The Histories, King Lear at The Public) plays the anguished prince of Denmark who is confronted at every turn with a poisonous power structure that's robbed him of his father, and forever darkened his understanding of the world. Inspired by The Mobile Unit’s unique approach to engaging diverse communities with the arts, Patricia McGregor (Hurt Village, brownsville song (b-side for tray) at Lincoln Center) directs this bold take on Shakespeare's immortal tale about family, deceit and the explosive consequences of unchecked corruption.

Captain America: Civil War brings back former Avengers characters such as Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and Vision (Paul Bettany); it also drags into the fray low-rent superhero Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and introduces both the powerful African prince Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and a new, younger incarnation of Spider-Man.

In this superhero epic, the denizens of the Marvel Universe are forced to pick sides when Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) come to blows over ideological differences. After a mission involving a new Avengers squad led by Cap ends with several civilian casualties in Lagos, the team are asked to sign an agreement that would force them to take orders from a United Nations panel. Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) pressures Cap to accept this new arrangement, in part because he feels deeply guilty about his own past recklessness; Captain America, however, fears that the Avengers will only be corrupted by bureaucracy. Their disagreement eventually escalates into all-out war when Cap's old friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), now a brainwashed assassin known as the Winter Soldier, reenters the picture. Captain America: Civil War brings back former Avengers characters such as Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and Vision (Paul Bettany); it also drags into the fray low-rent superhero Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and introduces both the powerful African prince Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and a new, younger incarnation of Spider-Man (Tom Holland).

Join NYC Parks and the New York City Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment for a free film!

When the kids sneak into inventor Wayne Szalinski's upstairs lab to retrieve an errant baseball, his experimental shrink ray miniaturizes them. When Szalinski returns home, he destroys the device—which he thinks is a failure—and dumps it in the trash, throwing out the kids along with it. The four children, now 1/4-inch tall, must survive the journey back to the house through a yard where sprinklers bring treacherous storms and garden-variety ants stampede like elephants.

On the occasion of their collaboration with Juanli Carrion's public artwork OSS#02, the shadow performance group Cave Dogs will perform "Sure-Minded Uncertainties", which explores how immigration and the interplay of materialism, spiritualism, technology, and stewardship of the earth shapes our modern world.

A range of fantastical characters acting as modern day archetypes navigate a series of transformations through five short stories interweaving their fundamentally similar, but often out of place worlds. The work, when viewed in its entirety, forms a collective narrative that addresses mankind’s complicated relationship to each other, nature, and its resources. "Sure-Minded Uncertainties" uses innovative, visual effects and an original soundtrack to create a rich experience that documents and preserves important cultural voices and stories.

Cave Dogs brings together visual artists, puppeteers, musicians, dancers, storytellers, and writers in the spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration. Their medium evolves out of two ancient traditions: shadow puppet theatre and storytelling—and several contemporary art forms including film, video, sound, computer-generated animation, and performance art to create multiple, richly-layered visual tableaus, and produce effects that conjure both the dreamlike quality of early experimental film and the humor of contemporary animation.

We invite the audience to both de-construct these shadowy illusions while they are caught up in the intriguing layers of effects.
