It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

This workshop will take us through the process of transforming overgrown areas into natural areas that are safe, beautiful, enjoyable, ecologically beneficial, and manageable. We’ll examine the physical conditions of the overgrown rock-outcrop area at the Roberto Clemente Community Garden and identify the plants, determining which to keep and which to remove. We’ll go into the kinds of plantings and people-centered spaces that might be possible, the techniques of site preparation and planting, and the care to give it over time.

Calling all park lovers! This spring, the New York Junior League's Playground Improvement Project committee ("PIP") invites you to join them in rolling up your sleeves to help revitalize Corlears Hook Park!

Throughout five weekends in April and May New York Junior League volunteers and community volunteers will spend a day in the park (rain or shine) gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this highly-used space. All volunteers will be provided with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt.

Registration
All participants (ages 16 and older) must register in advance at nyjl.org/playground. Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project
For more than 25 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized, and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend cleanup days include landscaping and repairing the parks. PIP works with over 700 volunteers each season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community.

Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

This hands-on workshop will use the backdrop of the Fantastic Voyage exhibition to explore the history of the Green Revolution and the rise of industrial food production. We will take a closer look at how food has migrated from a source of health and wellness to a co-opted capitalist tool designed to create a dependency on (and some would say addiction to) processed foods and all of its sugar, salt and fat configurations.

Participants will learn how to make pomegranate-cherry gummies as an example of regaining a comprehensive understanding of food for sale versus the food we grow and/or prepare ourselves.

This workshop is offered as part of the Fantastic Voyage exhibition by artists Stefani Bardin and Assaf Tamir. The immersive installation explores the role of food production in our personal health and the health of the environment.

Village Community Boathouse is offering free Community Rowing in our fleet of Whitehall Gigs. No experience is necessary though rowing does require some physical dexterity.

Community Rowing events are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds on site.

Please note: The rows last, depending on river conditions and crew experience, between one and three hours. Please arrive on-time as the crews will be assigned before 1:00 p.m. Bring extra water, a hat, and sunscreen as you will be rowing outdoors in the hot sun. Rowing is weather dependent and will be canceled for high winds, rain, or thunderstorms. All participants must sign a waiver and be able to climb a ladder.

The immersive installation at the Freshkills Park Studio + Gallery explores the role of food production in our personal health and the health of the environment.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their workouts, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Saturday morning walks begin at 8:30 a.m.

Now, visitors can use the rustic trail to view native plantings that attract birds and other wildlife.
