Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.

Highlights of this tour include McGowan's Pass, Fort Clinton, Nutter's Battery, and the Harlem Meer.

The tour route involves many hills and stairs, and some uneven terrain. The tour starts at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (inside the park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues), and ends near the park perimeter at 106th Street and Fifth Avenue.

Randall's Island has a rich, unique, and varied history. Randall's Island Park Alliance’s staff loves nothing more than to share this fascinating history with interested visitors. Two colossal bridges, both the largest of their kind when completed, span the island, which was once three separate land masses; these were combined by Robert Moses through landfill in the mid-1900s. Come learn more about Robert Moses, the bridges, and the history of the island and the park it become.

In this reimagining of the classic collection of stories by Rudyard Kipling, director Jon Favreau uses visually stunning CGI to create the community of animals surrounding Mowgli (Neel Sethi), a human boy adopted by a pack of wolves. The appearance of a villainous tiger named Shere Khan (voiced byIdris Elba) forces Mowgli's guardian, the panther Bagheera (Ben Kingsley), to shepherd the child to safety in the "man village." Along the way, the boy meets an affable, lazy bear named Baloo (Bill Murray), as well as a snake with hypnotic powers (Scarlett Johansson) and an orangutan (Christopher Walken) who wants to harness the power of fire. Lupita Nyong'o, Giancarlo Esposito, and Garry Shandling also lend their voices to this adventure tale. Author: Tom Ciampoli

We’ll teach you everything you need to know, from native plant and tree identification to the how, why, and what of invasive species removal. Later, you can tell your friends and family how you helped preserve a forest in the middle of Manhattan!

New members are required to attend an Orientation Session, held on the first Saturday of the month. Email volunteer@nyrp.org or call 917-291-6436 for more details.

Join NYC Parks, Fort Tryon Park Trust and the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance for a guided tour of the group exhibition "Evolving Terrain" in Northern Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park. Meet New York-based artists Anthony Heinz May, Tom Monsees, Matthias Neumann, and Audrey Shachnow to discover the inspiration they drew from the sublime landscape of the park.

The works in "Evolving Terrain" address the natural landscape within an ever-changing city, and hope to create a dialogue between communities, artists, and nature, and the ways in which the natural realm supports the built environment. All four art works will be on view throughout Fort Tryon Park through December 1, 2016.

About the Artworks

"Persieverrance"
Installed near the park entrance at Bennett Avenue and Broadway, Anthony Heinz May’s "Persieverrance" takes the form of a pixelated tree trunk constructed from a discarded log found in Fort Tryon Park. The title is an intentionally misspelled version of the word perseverance, to engage in the compositional reconstruction of natural tree waste found in the park. The title suggests processes observed in the fragmented assemblage and questions relations between nature, humans and technology. The breakdown of the recycled tree trunk into equal-sized units portrays scientific instrumentality involved in the removal of natural material from cycles that benefit all life on Earth, for human salvation and profiteering.

"Tripod"
Tom Monsees’ "Tripod" is made up of three casts of a found piece of rotting wood, situated in the peaceful Abby’s Lawn. It is remade in ghostly matte white in reference to death masks and a homage to the object’s prior life. The wood is elevated to a place of honor generally reserved for well known, and/or well regarded, human subjects.

"Golden Pears"
Audrey Shachnow makes large scale sculptures with the purpose of creating beauty in everyday objects. Her large scale installation of "Golden Pears", adjacent to the Cloisters Lawn, highlights the connection between the importance of the earth's natural environment and its ability to support the food we grow to sustain life. The five oversized Golden Pears invite a dialogue between the trees and the park setting, reminding us of the importance of preserving nature.

"bench V (basics)"
bench V (basics) is a site-specific installation with seating nestled into a secluded, triangular plot of land, near New Leaf Café, designed and created by Matthias Neumann. It continues the artist’s basics series of work, exploring an abstracted notion of form, material, space, and utility. Basics is founded on a constructive logic of additive 2x4 wood studs that allow a monumentality through every-day means. The work can be experienced both as an abstract sculptural gesture and interactive spatial environment. Basics encourages an uncertainty in the dialog between the viewer and the work, opening possibilities in the public quality and appropriation of the work. The temporality of the site-specific intervention is mirrored by the material and constructive logic of the work.
