Join us for the first of two evenings of Music, Dance and Art at Virginia Park.

If you play piano or any other instrument, if you like to dance, if you like to draw, or just enjoy an evening with your community, this is your event!

The piano "Nature is Watching You" wants to make people reflect on how we treat Nature and subsequently the planet. We have to be more conscious of our acts and their consequences. We can change that, even if it's one person at a time.

Sing For Hope Pianos

For two weeks in June, they bring stunningly painted pianos – each a unique piece of art created by a different artist – to New York City’s parks, streets, and public spaces for anyone and everyone to play. The Sing for Hope Pianos inspire community engagement.

Come to share your work or simply enjoy the garden all abloom. Wine and light refreshments will be served.

'Party Up' with NYC Parks and the Black Rock Coalition Orchestra as we celebrate the artistry of Prince!

In celebration of what would have been Prince’s 59th birthday, The Black Rock Coalition Orchestra dips into the vault for IT’S GONNA BE A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT, a rousing remembrance under the musical direction of lifetime fan and rock-royalty-in-her-own-right, Tamar-kali. This bittersweet reflection, paced out by show-stopping bandleader Jerome Jordan, conjures B-sides, bootlegs and bonuses from over 11 album eras. With a Supergroup-backing band (including Cassandra O’Neal from the New Power Generation, Sylvia Black of Betty Black, Sharief of Sharief in Burgundy, and Mark Robohm), a parade of top-notch vocalists (such as Corey Glover of Living Colour, Gordon Voidwell of WILLS, and Doron Flake of Model Decoy), and a full slate of special guests, this soul-satisfying, booty-shaking performance will remind us all of what music can do when the people who make it are free to create outside the lines.

The concert will be followed by a screening of "Purple Rain". The film tells the story of a young musician tormented by an abusive home, a rival singer, a burgeoning romance, and his disgruntled band, as his star begins to rise. "Purple Rain" was Prince's acting debut and features contains extended concert sequences.

The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. The film starts at 8:30 p.m.

Join the Stewardship Team for an evening of horseshoe crab monitoring! Since 2013, NYC Parks has been monitoring horseshoe crab spawning activity along the restored sandy beach at Coney Island Creek. We'll be walking the beach to count the number of crabs present and tagging them to keep track of how many we've already seen as part of NYC Parks' ongoing effort to monitor their activity. This exciting work contributes to a long-term research study that is helping us to better understand and protect the horseshoe crabs that live in our urban waters. Come and take a closer look at our city’s valuable natural resources! Please come dressed in layers, clothes that can get dirty, and waterproof boots or sneakers, and bring your own water bottle. Unlike most other sports, rowing can be learned at any age and fitness level! Taking an introductory class with Row New York is a great way to get fit, have fun, and enjoy the beauty of the river against the backdrop of the city. It’s a truly unique experience! Learn to Row classes take place in the spring, summer, and fall at the Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse on the Harlem River in Northern Manhattan.

This is a one-day program. All classes take place on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

  • Learn basics of sweep rowing
  • Develop working knowledge of the sport including vocabulary and equipment
  • Learn proper rowing technique on land and on the water
  • Advance to water on a stable rowing barge to develop on-water technique

This session prepares participants for our Level 2 course, in which advanced rowing skills are acquired on the water. Questions about Learn-to-Row? Visit Row New York's Q&A page.

Enjoy free yoga in Fort Greene Park in collaboration with the public artwork Circadia by Blythe Cain, which opens June 20. Bring a yoga mat, water, and sunscreen, and wear comfortable clothes. All levels are welcome!

This weekly class will take place on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. from June 3 to October 14 (except July 1 and September 2).

This free event is sponsored by lushretreats.com for Circadia!

Meet at the flag pole between the monument and Visitor's Center. This yoga class will take place on the lawn in front of the Ft. Greene Park Visitor Center. Circadia is an interactive luminescent sculpture and seating system made from concrete and glow sand, which acts as a guide to the park entrance. Resembling a historic building foundation, Circadia also mimics the park's rolling hills and the natural rhythms found in nature.

This exhibition and event are made possible by the Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant, which supports the creation of artworks by New York City-based emerging artists at 10 parks that are highly visible, but underserved by cultural programming. The UNIQLO grant program will transform these locations into engaging art destinations with a series of rotating exhibitions and community events through 2019.

The first-ever Greenbelt Outdoor Adventure Day will give New Yorkers the chance to try outdoor activities of all kinds and experience Staten Island’s vast Greenbelt—a network of lush parks, wetlands and hiking trails, often referred to as the city’s hidden jewel. This inaugural event is being held by the Greenbelt Conservancy in partnership with NYC Parks, and is funded by the New York City Council as part of the “A Greener NYC” initiative.

Activities include:

  • Canoeing with Urban Park Rangers
  • Fishing with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation
  • Hiking with Greenbelt Education staff
  • Live birds of prey demonstrations
  • Survival skills workshop

The NYC Parks Fitness Mobile and Play Mobile will also be on site offering outdoor games and activities.

The Greenbelt spans 2,800 acres, including New York City’s largest remaining forest preserve and more than 35 miles of marked hiking trails. The trail system traverses diverse ecosystems and offers visitors a refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Preregistration is not required and all equipment will be provided on site. For more information, visit sigreenbelt.org or email naturecenter@sigreenbelt.org.

Join NYC Parks for a special concert featuring Taikoza. Taikoza has created a new sound using the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums, and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings: big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance.

About Taikoza
Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the renaissance of taiko in Japan in the '60s and introduced Taiko worldwide).

The Village Community Boathouse is offering free public rowing on Prospect Park Lake this summer.

Rowing is a beautifully simple, healthy, and empowering sport, and the ample waters of the lake are an ideal place to pursue its pleasures.

Community rowing is free and open to all; no experience or reservations necessary. Sessions run from noon until 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays from June 10 to August 26. Boats are launched from the ramp on Well House Drive in the southwest corner of the lake. The temporary boathouse–two shipping containers–is located just across from the ramp.

Who Can Participate
Community rowing is open to all, although some physical dexterity is required to get in and out of the boats. The focus of the program is recreation in a safe and respectful environment. Each participant must sign a waiver; kids and teens younger than 18 must be escorted by a parent. Life jackets are provided—and must be worn!

What You'll Row
We use a diverse fleet of traditional wooden rowing boats, built by volunteers and similar in shape and appearance to those used in the early days of park rowing.

How the Villiage Community Boathouse is Funded
We are a nonprofit organization entirely run by volunteers. While no commitment is required from those who row with us, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. The park is surrounded by a large and diverse population that needs more access to on-water recreation.Your donations make our program possible. If you're looking to volunteer, please email volunteers@vcb.nyc.
