The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market is opening for its ninth season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market has engaged hundreds of local youths, distributed over 10 tons of fresh food, recycled 24 tons of organic waste via its market compost dropoff operation, hosted 240 community market sessions, delivered 550 cooking demonstrations, 16 bread baking workshops and more in its eight seasons of operation.

Sunday market reopens for a fifth season July 30, 2017 on the farm, with a series of healing events which highlight the value of herbs and non-invasive healing modalities for humans. An exhibition of site-specific artworks by Andrea Arroyo will be on view at Maggie’s Garden and Friendship Garden in Harlem, through October 31, 2017.

“Women with Wings” will feature a series of artworks inspired by the women of New York, including the historical and contemporary women who make Uptown Manhattan a diverse and vibrant community. Each piece, executed in mixed media and repurposed materials, is integrated within the natural environment of plants, grass and other elements of each garden. “Women with Wings” creates a multi-level conversation bridging local culture, nature and history that connects the past and the present.

Artworks include “Maggie’s Pearls of Wisdom”, a piece executed in acrylic, repurposed materials and beads, integrated with a Magnolia tree and inspired by the legacy of Maggie Burnett, beloved Harlem resident and founder of Maggie’s Garden, and “Women in Movement” a piece featuring multiple women silhouettes on multiple wheels hanging from light posts inside the garden.

Set in Africa, China and our own Central Park, The Princess, The Emperor, and The Duck retells storyteller Hans Christian Andersen’s world-famous fairy tales — The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Ugly Duckling — bringing the Theatre to life with new marionettes and hand painted scenery. Guided by a narrating Owl, audience members experience each story with the original tales that teach important life lessons still relevant to children today.

About the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre

The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre was imported to the U.S. in 1876 as Sweden’s exhibit for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The enchanting Swedish architecture and craftsmanship of the structure, suggestive of a model schoolhouse, caught the eye of Frederick Law Olmsted, who brought it to Central Park in 1877

A traveling marionette company was founded in 1939 and in 1947 the Swedish Cottage became home to the company. In 1973, a permanent theater was constructed inside the Swedish Cottage, designed for marionette performances. Since then, hundreds of thousands of children and families from around the world have enjoyed its original productions.

Participants are invited to create lanterns inspired by Harlem's horticultural gems and the resourceful visionaries that tend them. This year's Morningside Lights celebrates the neighborhood's deep tradition of civic activism that blossoms in the gardens carefully cultivated in its many reclaimed spaces.

Each day's workshop activities are a step in the process as our lanterns take shape from idea to final product. Visit morningside-lights.com/schedule for a daily menu of activities, but please note the activities are subject to change based on our progress. No experience is necessary.

A salute to Hip-Hop with some of its most celebrated storytellers. This is a free, non-ticketed event. Entrance will be first come, first served.

EPMD

Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith, better known as the hip-hop duo EPMD (“Erick and Parrish Making Dollars”), grew up together on Long Island and began making music in the late ’80s. Their 1988 release, Strictly Business topped the R&B charts and went certified gold with hits including, “You Gots to Chill” and the eponymous “Strictly Business.” They followed up with Unfinished Business (1989) and Business as Usual (1990) which saw a collaboration with L.L. Cool J on the hit “Rampage.” In 1992, the duo released Business Never Personal before temporarily calling it quits in 1993. After both launching solo careers, the two reunited in 1997 releasing the aptly named comeback LP, Back in Business, quickly followed by 1999’s Out of Business. The two worked on their solo careers until reuniting again in 2008 for We Mean Business, and they recently announced plans for a new album, Big Business, due in 2018.

SLICK RICK THE RULER

Of the pioneers who ushered in the “Golden Age of Hip Hop” in the 1980s, only one of them can claim England as their birthplace. Alas, the linguistic master, Ricky Martin Lloyd Walters, known across the globe as Slick Rick, has British roots. With his signature eye patch and opulent, regal jewelry, Rick’s incomparable style and lyrical prowess are as respected as any other in the rap game. The most-sampled hip hop artist of all time (his words & beats appear in over 600 tracks by other artists), Rick the Ruler got his start in ’83 when he joined Doug E. Fresh in the Get Fresh Crew. Within five years he would release The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, which launched his solo career and firmly established him as the lyricist of his generation. Add three other albums to his credit, as well as an outrageously extensive list of collaborations with the top names in rap (Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, Mos Def, to name a few), multiple TV and film appearances and honors, awards & inclusion on every esteemed list of superlative hip hop performers ever. But the magnanimous Rick hasn’t stopped there; he mentors kids on the dangers of violence, and his many philanthropic endeavors help to raise awareness and much needed funds for underserved communities.

BLACK MOON

Black Moon is the legendary Hip-Hop group comprised of Buckshot, 5FT and DJ Evil Dee. They stormed on the scene with the debut of their classic album, ‘Enta Da Stage,’ which featured hits such as Who Got The Props, How Many Emcees and Gotcha Opin. The group later went on to release follow up titles, such as War Zone & Total Eclipse.

SMIF N WESSUN

Smif N Wessun is the historic duo of Tek & Steele. The group forever changed the borough of Brooklyn’s name to BUCKTOWN. Smif N Wessun’s debut album, Da Shinin, was comprised of hit songs such as Bucktown, Sound Bwoy Bureill, and Stand Strong. Other projects include The Rude Awakening, Reloaded, Monumental and Born & Raised. Smif N Wessun are also known for their work with Mary J Blige, Tupac, and Aaliyah.

An exhibition of site-specific artworks by Andrea Arroyo will be on view at Maggie’s Garden and Friendship Garden in Harlem, through October 31, 2017.

Topics will include:

  • Who you need to know in NYC Parks
  • How you and your neighbors can spruce up your park with an “It’s My Park” project
  • How staff from your company can support a park
  • Ways to join together with neighbors who also care about your park

Meet staff members, and hear stories from experienced volunteers and community leaders.

This is a workshop for people who have been working with their parks for less than one year.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

To RSVP for tour, please visit on.nyc.gov/gracietour.

Currently, Gracie Mansion is not offering group tours. If you are part of a private organization that would like to tour the house, please email your request, including the size of group, your name and the purpose of a tour, to gracieinfo@cityhall.nyc.gov and we will work to add you to one of the currently scheduled tours.

Morningside Lights: The Secret Gardens kicks off on September 16, 2017 and runs until September 23, 2017.
