The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic “Puss in Boots” tale, with a twist. Once upon a time there lived a young man named Ferguson Mundingle. Fergus has just the bare essentials in life – a roof over his head, the clothes on his back, and his ever faithful pet cat. One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

This project is funded by the New York City Council’s Parks Equity Initiative, Council Member Ritchie Torres.

Every year, the New York Public School system sponsors a dance competition for youngsters in fifth grade; in this contest, boys and girls ages 10 and 11 learn traditional ballroom dancing styles such as the fox trot, the rumba, and the tango, and then pit their skills against other students from around the Big Apple. Mad Hot Ballroom is a documentary which offers an inside look at this event, as well as the teachers and students who take part, with a particular emphasis on three schools: P.S. 112, in a Bensonhurst neighborhood dominated by Italian and Asian families; P.S. 150, located in the wealthy and fashionable Tribeca district; and P.S. 115, a Washington Heights school where the vast majority of families live below the poverty line. Filmmaker Marilyn Agrelo follows the young dancers as they gain confidence and skill and grow into "little ladies and gentlemen," as one teacher puts it, while also examining how cultural differences impact the competition for some students and how the boys and girls feel about the opposite sex as they begin to make friends with one another. Mad Hot Ballroom received a wildly enthusiastic world premiere at the 2005 Slamdance Film Festival.

Three of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies are produced by the irreverent, surprising, and critically-acclaimed The Drilling Company: Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It with music by Natalie Smith, and Measure for Measure. The plays feature the greatest, funniest and noblest women of the canon—Beatrice, Rosalind, and Isabella—remarkable characters who, with close connections to other women, master true love and overcome misogyny and sexual harassment. In addition, the anniversaries of William Shakespeare’s birth (452nd) and death (400th) are honored with a daylong celebration.

"When the party patio lanterns are lit, something special is about to happen"

When the High Line opened in 2009, Patty Heffley, who had enjoyed decades of privacy in her apartment, suddenly found herself staring face to face with park visitors. She responded by rounding up talented friends and creating an ad-hoc performance series on her fire escape that included music, comedy, burlesque and even a science lecture. The Renegade Cabaret was born and soon became a four-story-high "underground" hit that was written up in the The New York Times and The New Yorker.

While the Renegade Cabaret no longer takes place on her fire escape next to the High Line, Patty and a posse of talent who continue to find odd places to perform, will present you with a goulash of song, comedy and entertainment that was once a staple of New York, namely, spontaneous, rebellious performance.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Patty Heffley, aka Patrice at the Wheel, galloped out of the West to the middle of Gotham to live life as an artist just by being herself. She has no plans to keep her mouth shut.

Co-founder and co-producer Elizabeth Soychak, aka The Lady in the Green Dress, finds performing out of doors photosynthesizing. Her recordings can be found at on cdbabyand iTunes

Mary Foster Conklin, aka The lady in the Red Dress, grew up across the river (New Jersey) and has lived below 14th Street for decades. She loves spontaneous singing in odd places and playing the ukulele, but makes up for it by cursing a lot.

Roger Manning, aka Barefoot Roger, hails from the South (downtown) and enjoys pick'n but not-so-much grin'n and has done plenty of busk'n.

John DiPinto, aka The Man in the Hat, was born in Manhattan, of course. Hatless at birth, he has since amassed a large collection of headgear. An eclectic singer and instrumentalist, he now lives in Brooklyn with two cats who do not wear hats.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

City Parks Foundation offers a traveling puppet show, CityParks PuppetMobile, the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic Puss in Boots tale, with a twist.

Kick off the weekend with some local sounds at this monthly musical get-happy hour.

Every month Summer on the Hudson features a different artist to get your weekend started right. Meet up in West Harlem Piers Park with friends on the last Friday of the month for great music, fresh air, and beautiful scenery.

May 27
Elle Winston - This Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter's sound might best be described as a meeting of folk-legend James Taylor and powerful songstress Jill Scott. Her music is a deep mixture of jazz-inspired soul music, with hints of blues and rock—true American roots music.

June 24
Tattoo Money - Downtown stories fuse indie rock sounds with an 808

July 29
Consumata Sonidera - This performance features heavy tropical rhythms, sweet horn melodies, and vibrant percussions. Consumata collages a full spectrum of local and global sounds by means of cut-ups.

Aug 26
The Bones of J.R. Jones - "He's a one man band who can hold an audience rapt, rendering the cacophony of a stage full of musicians utterly unnecessary." - Noisey.Vice

Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they'd be back for her someday, it's been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan. A teenage girl learns about love, adult responsibility, and how to do The Dirty Boogie in this romantic drama. In 1963, "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is a 17-year-old spending the summer with her family at a resort hotel in the Catskills; she plans on being in the Peace Corps next summer, so this is expected to be her last summer as a carefree adolescent. Baby doesn't get along with her older sister, Lisa (Jane Brucker), and she's bored to tears by most of the older guests at the resort. However, one night Baby hears what sounds like a party going on in the employee's dormitory, and she pokes her head in to discover most of the hotel staff enjoying the sort of close dancing that would get you kicked out of the senior prom in no time flat. Baby is particularly struck by handsome Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), a dancer in the resort's floor show, and falls head over heels in love, wanting to be near him. When Johnny's dance partner, Penny (Cynthia Rhodes), finds herself pregnant after a fling with one of the waiters, Baby volunteers to learn her steps and take her place; however, Baby's father, Dr. Jake Houseman (Jerry Orbach), will have none of it, convinced that Johnny is a low life and that his daughter is too young to understand her own feelings. Dirty Dancing was a surprise box-office hit, and the soundtrack album was an even bigger success, spawning several hit singles and inspiring a top-drawing concert tour featuring several of its artists.

Closed to the public in 1934, the Hallett Nature Sanctuary remained mostly untouched until 2001, when Central Park Conservancy took up a more comprehensive program of restoration and maintenance. Now, visitors can use the rustic trail to view native plantings that attract birds and other wildlife. Join our guides for this exclusive tour of the Hallett Nature Sanctuary, open to visitors only on Central Park Conservancy guided tours and during limited open hours.

The tour route involves wood-chipped trails and some hills. The tour starts and ends in front of the José Martí statue (Central Park South at Sixth Avenue)

For weather cancellation and other ticket policies, please review the Central Park Conservancy policies carefully.

Groups of seven or more must schedule a custom tour three weeks in advance at tours@centralparknyc.org.

Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the Park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.
