Join us for a journey back in time to the elite "Bond Street area", home to Astors, Vanderbilts, Delanos – and the Tredwells, who lived in the Merchant’s House. You’ll see how the neighborhood surrounding the Tredwells’ home evolved from a refined and tranquil residential enclave into a busy commercial center. Visit important 19th century landmark buildings on this tour through 21st century NoHo.

In this special walking tour, we’ll explore the world of Irish immigrants, who flooded into New York City in the 19th century to escape famine and hardship in Ireland; in 1855, approximately 24,000 Irish immigrants worked as servants for wealthy families like the Tredwells. We’ll explore the world of these immigrants and see sites associated with a servant’s life outside the walls of her employer’s home.

Tour is one hour and begins promptly at 12:30 p.m.
Promenaders will return to the Museum in time to take the 2 p.m. Guided Tour if they wish.

Starting off our 2018 lecture series, join us for a talk with Andy McCarthy on the restless, transformative, and violent first year in the administration of Governor John Alsop King, owner of King Manor from 1827-1867.

In 1857, the state Legislature expanded its powers in the local administration of New York City, taking control of the construction of Central Park, overseeing the maritime operations and traffic of the harbor, and alienating the clout, muscle, and influence of Tammany Hall. Riots erupted in Manhattan, where for some months there were two opposing police forces, and whose mayor evaded an arrest warrant on the eve of a nationwide financial panic. Tensions inflamed between municipal and state politicians, labor and capital, and rich and poor. New York City was run by the party of slavery while King was the first Republican to lead the Excelsior State. Before the War Between the States, this was a war within the state.

Andy McCarthy is a reference librarian at the local history and genealogy division at NYPL; a former news researcher at ABC News; and for 8 years worked as an NYC doubledecker bus tour guide.

The tension between mankind and Mother Nature has long been a disturbing battleground. There is a tendency to level the ground and bulldoze over anything in our way—often realizing after the fact that we built too big, too bold, and too quickly.

In “Natural Impact,” the new exhibit on view at NYC Parks’ Arsenal Gallery in Central Park, visual artists highlight the ingenuity and absurdity of this cycle through their work. Artists look at how nature sneaks back into our precisely constructed world and either softens the edges, or abruptly overwhelms them.

Curated by D. Dominick Lombardi, “Natural Impact” features a variety of mediums including painting, screenprints, and sculpture, from artists Tim Daly, Lina Puerta, Brant Moorefield, Cecilia Whittaker Doe, Dominick Rapone, and Jodie Mim Goodnough.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

This talk will take a fascinating multimedia look at the history and culture of the Irish of New York from their immigrant beginnings to the present day. Their journey of hope is reflected in the shared experiences of immigrants from around the world coming to America.

To escape religious persecution and decades of poverty and famine, waves of Irish immigrants arrived in New York from the 18th century on. By the mid-19th century, one quarter of the City’s population was Irish. Many Irish women and girls found jobs as live-in servants for New York’s wealthy citizens, the Tredwells among them. It is a compelling story: they typically emigrated from Ireland at a young age, were willing to do the work others shunned, and often endured cruel prejudice. Yet, despite it all, these women managed to persevere, and collectively sent millions of dollars home so that their relatives could escape the troubles at home for a better life.

The Museum’s servants quarters are “arguably the oldest intact site of Irish habitation in Manhattan” (TimeOut New York). Unfortunately, little is known about the Tredwells’ four servants besides their names, ages, and place of birth (Ireland), taken from census reports; they themselves left no written record. One thing is certain though: the family’s lifestyle of on East 4th Street would have been utterly impossible without them.

Tara Rider is the director of Stony Brook University’s international academic programs to both Ireland and England, where she seeks to introduce students to new cultures, ideas, and histories. She earned her Ph.D. in history from SUNY Stony Brook.

NOTE LOCATION: Church of St. Brigid, which was built in 1848 by Irish immigrants for those fleeing the Great Famine, 119 Avenue B (southeastern corner of 8th Street)

This exhibition is FREE and open to the public. For more information, please call (212) 360-8163.

The Poe Park Visitor Center proudly presents Be: Women of Color Exhibition, for Women’s History Month!

Artist Walter Cruz's exhibition, Be: Women of Color, is a collection of acrylic works that depict women living their everyday lives. The simplified forms serve as a slightly blank slate for viewers to imagine themselves as the subjects. Complimentary colors have been chosen as the palettes to create a welcoming presence within each piece.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their workouts, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Saturday morning walks begin at 8:30 a.m.

We are reflections of each other. Let's hold one another as such.

This exhibition is FREE and open to the public. For more information, please call (212) 360-8163.

We are reflections of each other. Let's hold one another as such.

“Icons in their Own Right”, an art installation by Makeba "KEEBS" Rainey, seeks to remedy historic erasure, champion cultural representation, and reinforce identity and pride.

Makeba’s artistry is heavily influenced by hip-hop culture and Black consciousness. She carefully chooses each photograph of her characters to reflect a demeanor of confidence and power. She then selects an African-themed design that best contextualizes each figure’s attitude, creating an a exchange of multiple layers and emotions. We hope visitors will be inspired, among others, by President Obama resting in his power, Grace Jones posing confidently, Solange’s exhibiting quiet strength, and Langston Hughes looking casually amused. These are meant to be faces of mastery, intrigue, and calm, culminating in a rainbow of Black excellence that resonates with every walk of life.

This exhibit will be on view at the Old Stone House at Washington Park on Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., or by appointment.
