About Brooklyn Bridge Park's Movies With a View
Movies with a View is a summer must that has earned a large and loyal following. Since its launch in 2000, we’ve wowed, entertained, thrilled, and pulled at the heartstrings of over 340,000 moviegoers, making our program one of New York City’s favorite summer film series. Movies with a View takes place every Thursday evening in July and August. In 2016, the eight-week series will draw an average of 7,000 film fans at each screening. There is no better place to be on a hot summer night than watching a classic film and enjoying the breeze off of the East River from your perch under the Brooklyn Bridge with the dazzling Manhattan skyline before you.

Watch Hip to Hip Theatre Company's production of Julius Caesar at the Myrtle Avenue Lawn in Fort Greene Park.

This family-friendly production is for lovers of Shakespeare and for those experiencing Shakespeare for the first time. All performances are free and open to the public. Bring picnic blankets or low chairs. No lines. No tickets. Seating is first-come, first-served. Stop by an hour before the show for an interactive, kids' friendly workshop.

Kids & the Classics
6:30 p.m. - 7:15 p.m.
“Kids & the Classics” is the companion piece to Hip to Hip’s program of "Free Shakespeare in the Park”. This free 45-minute, interactive workshop is offered one hour before every performance, and is designed for children ages four to 14. It gives children a chance to interact with the text by previewing the characters and situations, creating links between the text and their own lives through theatre games, and close reading of text.

Julius Caesar
7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
In this sensational political thriller, Shakespeare explores the tension between private loyalties and the public good, and unflinchingly questions the price of freedom. Caesar is determined to crown himself as Rome’s first emperor, but a few senators, led by the idealistic, intellectual Brutus and his manipulative, rebellious friend Cassius, are prepared to sacrifice everything to liberate their country. Instead of being greeted as liberators, they are met with civil war.

The Incredibles revolves around former high-profile superhero Bob Parr (aka Mr. Incredible), who has not-so-successfully settled into suburban life along with his wife and kids under the watchful eye of the Superhero Protection Program. A far cry from the "glory days" during which "supers" were a welcome addition to society, the Parrs' living situation was brought on after a series of superhero-related lawsuits forced them into hiding. When not trying to fight small-time crime undercover with fellow former superhero Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson), Parr (voice by Craig T. Nelson) is muddling through the corporate world as a paunchy, emotionally unsatisfied insurance claims adjuster. His family is like any other with some notable exceptions -- his daughter has the uncanny ability to become invisible and create impenetrable force fields at will; his son, Dash, can run at incredible speeds; his wife, Helen (Holly Hunter), is known in super circles as Elastigirl, one of the most respected (and pliable) superwomen of her time. Just when it looks as if things can't get any worse for Bob, he gets a summons to show up at a remote island to receive instructions for a highly classified assignment, which he promptly accepts. Thrust back into the world of fighting crime, the Incredible family is back in familiar territory -- saving the world from Syndrome, a jilted former fan of Mr. Incredible.

In Disney's second straight-to-video sequel to Aladdin, Aladdin (voice of Scott Weinger) and Princess Jasmine (voice of Linda Larkin) have finally decided to marry, but when the big day finally arrives, the ceremony is thrown into chaos by the unexpected arrival of the Forty Thieves, who are searching for the enchanted Hand of Midas, a charm that will turn all it touches into gold. Aladdin makes the shocking discovery that his father (voice of John Rhys-Davies), long believed dead, is actually the leader of this infamous band of thieves, and when his father falls into peril, Aladdin must rescue him -- with the genie of the lamp (voice of Robin Williams) on hand to help.

Healthy soil is very important for growing healthy food crops! This workshop will include fun, hands-on practice on how to sample soil and correctly prepare it for testing. Then, we will work together to demystify reading soil test results from actual test results. And, we'll review strategies for how to safely garden in urban soils.

If you already have samples of your garden's soil, bring a cup of it with you to be tested! GreenBridge will cover the charge for testing up to three soil samples per garden for lead and pH.

Are you extending your growing season by planting fall crops? At this workshop we will also have a variety of appropriate vegetable seeds to give away. Bring gloves if you have them.

Wait Until Dark is an innovative, highly entertaining and suspenseful thriller about a blind housewife, Susy Hendrix (Audrey Hepburn). Independent and resourceful, Susy is learning to cope with her blindness, which resulted from a recent accident. She is aided by her difficult, slightly unreliable young neighbor Gloria (Julie Herrod) with whom she has an exasperated but lovingly maternal relationship. Susy's life is changed as she is terrorized by a group of criminals who believe she has hidden a baby doll used by them to smuggle heroin into the country. Unknown to Susy, her photographer husband Sam (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.) took the doll as a favor for a woman he met on an international plane flight and unwittingly brought the doll to the couple's New York apartment when the woman became afraid of the customs officials. Alone in her apartment and cut-off from the outside world, Susy must fight for her life against a gang of ruthless criminals, led by the violent, psychotic Roat (Alan Arkin). The tension builds as Roat, aided by his gang, impersonates police officers and friends of her husband in order to win Susy's confidence, gaining access to her apartment to look for the doll. The climax of the film, a violent physical confrontation between Susie and Roat in her dark kitchen, is one of the most memorable and frightening scenes in screen history. All performances are outstanding, particularly those of Audrey Hepburn who plays a vulnerable, but self-reliant woman, and Alan Arkin, in perhaps his best role, as the ruthless, manipulative Roat.

Keri Russell (waitress, Felicity), Johathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors), and Freddie Highmore (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland) star with Robin Williams in this amazing, hear-warming tale of two very different musicians who fall in love only to be torn apart, both unaware that they have a child, a musical prodigy who is trying to find them as much as they are trying to find each other, a boy destined for greatness as the rising young star August Rush.

This photo exhibit is the result of a "people to people" cultural exchange in which the artist participated last October. The artist and group visited Havana, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad. Music and art were everywhere and the crumbling Spanish architecture made for some interesting images. The various images convey his impressions of Cuba and the Cuban people in an apolitical manner. The recent presidential visit and talk of lifting the embargo lend context to the images.

Come to Van Cortlandt House Museum this summer and embark on an adventure back in time at our Summer History Camp. Your child will learn about the Van Cortlandt Family’s and New York City’s important roles in the formation of our country all while having fun.

Campers are immersed in the everyday life of a child in 18th century as they wear period clothing, and make and play 18th century toys and games. Typical chores such as churning butter, cooking, gathering wood, and hauling water are all part of the full History Camp experience.

Children will also travel in time back to the early years of the Revolutionary War and experience the life of a soldier in General George Washington’s army. They will lend a hand with pitching tents and setting up camp. “Enlistment” in the army, military drill, and reconnaissance, are also part of the action.

Camp is lead by Van Cortlandt House Museum’s professional staff, talented living history volunteers, and college students studying material culture and art education. Daily activities for Adventures in Time Summer History Camp are designed in keeping with New York State fourth grade curriculum standards and are appropriate for children ages six to 12.

Adventures in Time Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed second, third, fourth, or fifth grade (or the equivalent) in spring 2016. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Van Cortlandt House Museum is owned by NYC Parks, operated by The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York, and is a member of The Historic House Trust of New York City.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Bring a blanket, chair and friends and enjoy movies outdoors.

Both a classic movie for kids and a remarkable portrait of childhood, E.T. is a sci-fi adventure that captures thatstrange moment in youth when the world is a place of mysterious possibilities (some wonderful, some awful), and theuniverse seems somehow separate from the one inhabited by grown-ups. Henry Thomas plays Elliott, a young boy livingwith his single mother (Dee Wallace), his older brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton), and his younger sister Gertie(Drew Barrymore). In 2002, Steven Spielberg re-released E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial in a revised edition, with several deleted scenes restored and digitally refurbished special effects.

In case of rain the event moves indoors.

H.G. Bissinger's best-selling true-life account of a few months in the life of a high-school football team comes to the screen in this adaptation written and directed by Peter Berg. Odessa, TX, is an oil town in the western part of the state that's home to the Permian High School Panthers, the football team with the best winning record in the state. Odessa is a town with more than its share of problems; the decline of the oil business in Texas has set the city's economy into a tailspin, and racial tensions still erupt into violence on occasion. But football is the one thing that brings all the people of Odessa together, and on Friday nights every fall, as many as 20,000 people fill Permian's football stadium to watch Coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) and his boys try to lead the team to victory. As Gaines works to build a winning team in a town where victory is prized above all else, however, his players struggle through the emotional trials common to any teenager and ponder the fact that there is little future in their hometown...and that a championship season can be as much a burden as a triumph.

Emotions run wild in the mind of a little girl who is uprooted from her peaceful life in the Midwest and forced to move to San Francisco in this Pixar adventure from director Pete Docter (Up, Monsters Inc.). Young Riley was perfectly content with her life when her father landed a new job in San Francisco, and the family moved across the country. Now, as Riley prepares to navigate a new city and attend a new school, her emotional headquarters becomes a hot bed of activity. As Joy (voice of Amy Poehler) attempts to keep Riley feeling happy and positive about the move, other emotions like Fear (voice of Bill Hader), Anger (voice of Lewis Black), Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) make the transition a bit more complicated.

Summer Streets is an annual celebration of New York City’s most valuable public space—our streets. On three consecutive Saturdays in August, nearly seven miles of NYC's streets are opened for people to play, run, walk and bike.

Summer Streets extends from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and connecting streets, and features sports, fitness, and art events and programs.

All activities at Summer Streets are free of charge, and designed for people of all ages and ability levels to share the streets respectfully. For more information about activities along the Summer Street Route, please visit the Summer Streets website.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market is opening for its eighth season of healthy food, activities, education, and food justice programming.

This year, the market will continue to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. We have also worked feverishly to improve the environment and delivery of services to market shoppers through strategic improvements in the physical infrastructure and by partnering with The Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation to increase our local visibility and foot traffic in the markets. That partnership will offer us additional market days at sister market sites in the immediate community, and to host several cultural festivals in the market and garden, author readings in the childrens garden, bike tours which complement our natural programming, and increase advertising and promotions of both markets.

The Large Market will continue its Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains at the newly-improved cooking island area in September; offer eggs and herbs for sale from the Hattie Carthan chicken coops and new herbal farm, and will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, eggs, and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs—The Mixed Basket weekly Program and Institutional Basket Program.
