Visit Poe Park Visitor Center for our new exhibit City Birds by Elana Amity. The exhibit will be on view at the Poe Park Visitor Center on Tuedays through Saturdays from March 4 through March 29. There will be an opening reception with a Q&A session on Saturday, March 11.

About City Birds
Raised in the Bronx, Elana Amity visited Poe Park numerous times. As a young child she roamed in and around the cottage, and as a teenager she and her friends danced while a band played in the gazebo. Edgar Allan Poe’s poem "The Raven" was brought to life by her father who loved reciting poetry. Ironically, Poe completed his final revision of "The Raven" while living on 85 Amity Street, now West Third Street, in New York’s Greenwich Village. Amity’s current work includes numerous paintings and monotypes of birds found in New York City’s parks, sidewalks, and window sills. Her birch bark paintings reflect images and textures found in natural settings. Her illustrated poems include the works of Wallace Steven, Edgar Allan Poe, William Wordsworth, and Wilfred Owen.

Artist Bio
New York City artist, Elana Amity, began her career as a teacher and freelance illustrator. She served on the board of the Society of Illustrators for many years. In 1984 she joined the faculty of LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts where she taught illustration, painting and drawing. In 2010 she opened a studio in Manhattan’s Garment District. Her paintings, drawings and prints capture both fleeting and enduring moments oflife in cities, nature and beyond. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and public spaces at home and abroad.

This exhibit of clay castings by Susan Stair forms portraits in trees used by the Lenape Indians for food and medicine. Conference House Park is home to the largest burial site of the pre-Columbian Lenape tribe in the five boroughs of New York City.

Susan Stair worked with John Kilcullen, Director of Conference House Park and certified arborist, in choosing the trees that were important to the Lenape. A sculptor who fixes her actions in the material, Stair captures the spirit of living trees as she reveals species, age and endurance. Viewers are encouraged to touch her work in the way one would meet a tree.

Lenape Landscape: Trees as Tonic has been extended and runs through Saturday, April 29, 2017 in the Lenape Gallery at Conference House Park Visitor Center. The gallery is open on Mondays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free. The gallery is closed on holidays.

Viewers will be encouraged to partake in a walk using a trail map identifying the trees included in the exhibit.

RED ALERT! 6th Annual Egg Hunt has moved from McGolrick Park to tbd Brooklyn (224 Franklin St, Brooklyn, NY 11222).

Town Square is excited to hold our 6th Annual McGolrick Park Egg Hunt! As with last year, we'll have thousands and thousands of eggs and photo opportunities with the Easter Bunny. We'll enjoy fun arts & crafts and face painting while supplies last.

We'll also rock with DJ Natalie and Baby DJ School, Laura Dayan and Rock'N Lolo, and Esther and Thunder & Sunshine! Wear your very best spring bonnet and join us at the park!

Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Egg hunts will be arranged for groups of 10 kids between noon and 3:00 p.m. as long as supplies last. This year, we're going to try something different. You will select the hour of your egg hunt (ie. 12-1, 1-2 or 2-3) when you purchase your egg hunt ticket. As a result, you can better plan your afternoon, and we can avoid a long line at the beginning of the event. Don't worry if you miss your hour; we will make sure that you'll join a hunt.

Please contact us if you’d like to lend a helping hand.

Light Spectrum draws the viewer’s attention to the science of light and color. The sculpture is composed of re-purposed lampshade frames through which natural light is filtered. Covered with a colorful new skin of crocheted plastic, the frames reference their former purpose in shading electric light, now transformed as a means of displaying the rainbow colors of the spectrum.

Please RSVP here for the opening reception. The sculpture will be on view through August 6, 2017.

The Light Spectrum and associated programs are made possible in part by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and by the Historic House Trust’s Contemporary Art Partnerships program, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the New York Community Trust. This sculpture is part of NYC Parks’ Art in the Parks program.

About the Artist
Antonia A. Perez, born and raised in New York City, is a mixed-media artist who collects discarded household detritus and repurposes it into sculpture, works on paper, and installations. Her work focuses on the transformation of materials, especially plastic bags, which she crochets into a range of forms representing domestic objects or abstract structures. In addition to making and exhibiting objects, she participates in socially-engaged activities centered on crocheting and the environment. She has presented workshops and public interactions, and has exhibited at Jameco Exchange at No Longer Empty in Jamaica, Museum of Art and Design, and Lettuce, Artichokes, Red Beets, Mango, Broccoli, Honey and Nutmeg: The Essex Street Market as Collaborator in Cuchifritos Gallery. She is a 2016 recipient of the EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop Studio Immersion Fellowship and the 2011 Marie Walsh Sharpe Space Program Award. Her work has been exhibited at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling, El Museo del Barrio, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, and the Queens Museum. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from Queens College, CUNY.

29 East Fourth Street was home not only to the eight Tredwell children, but also to two young granddaughters. Come tour the house and learn what life was like for children (and adults) in the 1850s, from schoolwork and chores to games and play. Could you carry a bucket of coal up steep stairs? Do you have a calling card? A top hat? What, no hoop skirt? How did you take a bath? And penmanship really, really mattered.

Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.

Highlights of this tour include McGowan's Pass, Fort Clinton, Nutter's Battery, and the Harlem Meer.

The tour route involves many hills and stairs, and some uneven terrain. The tour starts at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (inside the park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues), and ends near the park perimeter at 106th Street and Fifth Avenue.

With a hint of dark humor, Zane York transforms traditional floral still lives and familiar scenes into unexpected compositions in Nature Morte. Clusters of insects morph into floral arrangements, and cats in the clutches of pigeons rise to the heavens. Executed in the style and skill of famed Dutch masters, York reminds us of the mortality, transience, and vulnerability of all living things.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

To RSVP for tour, please visit on.nyc.gov/gracietour.

Currently, Gracie Mansion is not offering group tours. If you are part of a private organization that would like to tour the house, please email your request, including the size of group, your name and the purpose of a tour, to gracieinfo@cityhall.nyc.gov and we will work to add you to one of the currently scheduled tours.

To RSVP for a tour, please visit on.nyc.gov/gracietour.
