As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on the unbelievably true life stories of three of these women, known as "human computers", we follow these women as they quickly rose the ranks of NASA alongside many of history's greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return.

Please join The Natural Areas Conservancy in painting a beautiful new mural at the Bayswater Park barbecue area in Far Rockaway, Queens.

NYC-based artist Ruth Hofheimer's designs for the mural are inspired by the environmental diversity in Jamaica Bay and reflect the landscape, plants, and animals that live along NYC's coastline.

The mural will be outlined on the wall in advance, and artists at all levels and all ages are welcome to sign up for all or part of the painting process.

Painting can be messy and we recommend artists wear clothing that can get dirty. Please also bring your own water and sunscreen as it can get very hot and sunny in this park.

About Free Community Rowing
The Community Rows are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. Visit the Village Community Boathouse's website for more information and photos!

About Village Community Boathouse
Village Community Boathouse is a 501(c)(3) non-profit run by volunteers, based on the south side of Pier 40 on the Hudson River. While our community rowing programs are free, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. Your donations make our program possible.

Join us for a film screening of a documentary by Hank Linhart, an accomplished media artist.

This video tells a story about a remote corner of Queens, NY.

Blissville is the former name of the tiny triangle bounded by the Newtown Creek, the Long Island Expressway, and Calvary Cemetery. In addition to the world’s largest fortune cookie factory, there is a factory with the exclusive rights for making replicas of the Statue of Liberty, a sushi factory, an Afghan bakery and a giant car crusher.

Through street interviews, the film investigates the origin of the name of Blissville, and the character(s) of the town. This is also a story about the resiliency of a community remarkably rich in nationalities and ethnic backgrounds, featuring diverse residential neighbors living in close proximity with active industries.

For experienced* high school rowers, ages 14 to 18, this summer-long competitive camp meets five days a week, Mondays through Fridays, from 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m., on the historic Harlem River.

Athletes train with experienced coaches from a variety of competitive collegiate rowing programs. Rowing is a great way to distinguish your child’s college resume, and our seasoned coaches are always available as a resource to discuss rowing at a higher level. We work on enhancing rowing skills and technique in both sweep and sculling boats.

Along with rigorous training, participants compete in select regattas throughout the summer season. For those who are considering rowing at the collegiate level, this camp is the perfect addition to develop their talent.

*Previous rowing experience is defined as at least 10 months of previous rowing experience and/or race experience in at least four high school-level regattas. All participants are selected for this program at our coaches discretion.

Plant Patterns features the work of Adam Frezza & Terri Chiao, Adrienne Elise Tarver, Karin Haas, Liesl Pfeffer, and Nick Wildermuth. The artists use plants’ impressive natural characteristics as a means to explore various themes in their graphic works. Domestic and wild flora have provided artists with inspiration for centuries. The diversity and multitude of plant colors, shapes, and repetitive forms, which evolved to lure pollinators, caution predators, and promote regeneration, are naturally appealing to artists’ sensibilities.

Since 2004, Row New York has taught summer rowing camps to 6th through 12th graders, beginners and competitors. Camps run out of the beautiful Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse in Manhattan and our newest rowing location, the Paerdegat Basin Launch in Brooklyn.

Campers join for many reasons – fitness, discovery of a new sport, a competitive college application – but ultimately find one common result, a team to call their own.

During our novice Crew Camp your child will have the totally unique experience of learning to row on the Harlem River in Manhattan. Our three-week camp focuses on fun, fitness, and teamwork while prioritizing safety on the water. Campers are lead by experienced coaches while learning basic rowing techniques and boat moving skills, on and off the water.

No experience is necessary to join!

Classic films under the stars on the big screen. Bring a blanket and sit on the lawn to enjoy great food, friends, and a classic Warner Brothers cartoon before each film.

The lawn opens at 5:00 p.m. for blankets and picnicking. Films begin at sunset (typically between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.). All packages, bags, briefcases, backpacks, etc. are subject to inspection. Food items for sale curated by Hester Street Fair on the Fountain Terrace.

Pillow Talk
Doris Day (scoring her only Oscar nomination) plays a single New York interior decorator sharing a telephone party line (remember them?) with a bachelor composer (Rock Hudson). The playboy’s over active social life tends to hog the phone line, which leads to mutual loathing. The romantic comedy won an Oscar for Original Story and Screenplay beating out such heavyweights as Wild Strawberries and North By Northwest. Tony Randall and Thelma Ritter provide droll comic support for Day and Hudson who were successfully teamed up for two more romps. (1959) 105 MIN. (NR) (UNIVERSAL)
