This is an introduction overview to Oregon State University's (OSU) "Introduction to Permaculture Design", a free online long distance learning college course. After this workshop you will be fully familiarized with the fundamental concepts and have hands on practice before taking the full introduction curriculum online. We will provide all study and learning materials to prepare you for OSU's Course taught by Andrew Millison.

In this introduction we will explain what defines permaculture designs basics, including its ethics based philosophies and principles, and how permaculture uses nature as a guide to learn from and inform its decision making matrix.

After the morning class, we will rework Genesis into its transition period towards permaculture by:

  • Addressing its needs
  • Developing soil systems
  • Different composting practices
  • Water harvesting and irrigation
  • Bio-remediation while applying permaculture principles to each task in the garden on an ongoing basis each week and throughout the year

Please pack a lunch if you wish or a bodega and a supermarket are nearby.

Thirsty at night? Some pollinators are, like the shy bat. Luckily for the bat, species like mango, cacao, banana, guava, and agave rely on bats to pollinate their flowers. Take part in an interactive project painting nocturnal flowers in fluorescent colors to add to a night-garden, “glow room” installation. Then make a furry, handmade, paper-puppet bat to fly in the dayglo garden for a nectar feast at night.

Astoria Park Alliance is excited to host this brand new Father’s Day event along the East River. The community is invited to walk down Shore Boulevard aka “The Strip” exploring dozens of classic cars from around the region. Park-goers of all ages are encouraged to meet the car owners and learn more about their vehicles.

Food and craft vendors will stretch along Shore Blvd., accompanied by live music and family activities. Classic car owners will have their vehicles professionally judged in a variety of categories, with trophy presentations on stage to conclude the event.

Award winning singer-songwriter D.B. Rielly will be featured on the main stage. Rielly and his band will perform two sets of their wide-ranging collection of American roots music, including zydeco, blues, and country.

Featured vendors that include The Breakfast Shack, Bench Flour Bakers, Astor Apiaries and HellGate Farm will offer refreshments as well as last minute Father’s Day gifts.

Astoria Park, with its gorgeous views of Manhattan, has a long history of being a magnet for car and motorcycle enthusiasts. Walk the strip on any given day and you are likely to run into proud vehicle owners parked along the riverside showing off their rides and enjoying the view. The Father’s Day Classic Car Show aims to embrace the past, while looking to the future.

Participating classic cars will enter the site for registration prior to the event from the corner of Ditmars Boulevard and Shore Boulevard.

Please note: While the event is free to the public there is a $15 entry fee for each vehicle. Car owners interested in entering their vehicles in the Father’s Day Classic Car Show are encouraged to contact Astoria Park Alliance by email at getinvolved@astoriaparkalliance.org for more details.

The car show is made possible with sponsorship support from Old Astoria Neighborhood Association.

Over the course of the 1800s, weddings in New York City evolved from intimate private ceremonies to large, lavish affairs. This exhibition explores the changes in wedding customs as the 19th century progressed, including the trousseau, printed invitations, and the giving of gifts.

Highlights include Eliza Tredwell’s 1820 empire-style embroidered cotton wedding dress and Sarah Ann Tredwell’s 1872 silk bridal dress made in Paris, the highest fashion of the post-Civil War bustle period. Accessories include silk wedding boots, and earrings, corsage, and headpiece of wax orange blossoms.

This exhibition is on view on Thursdays through Mondays (except major holidays) from May 3 to July 30. The house is open on Thursdays from noon to 8:00 p.m. and Fridays through Mondays from noon to 5:00 p.m.

Village Community Boathouse is offering free Community Rowing in our fleet of Whitehall Gigs. No experience is necessary though rowing does require some physical dexterity.

Community Rowing events are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds on site.

Please note: The rows last, depending on river conditions and crew experience, between one and three hours. Please arrive on-time as the crews will be assigned before 1:00 p.m. Bring extra water, a hat, and sunscreen as you will be rowing outdoors in the hot sun. Rowing is weather dependent and will be canceled for high winds, rain, or thunderstorms. All participants must sign a waiver and be able to climb a ladder.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their workouts, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Saturday morning walks begin at 8:30 a.m.

The Bronx is both a place and a collection of metaphors, a peninsula attached to the mainland in a city of islands. In many ways, it is defined by its diversities—social, demographic, geographic and temporal. Hospitals, museums, universities, formal gardens, beaches, parks, and historical sites are prominent features of the landscape. Massive public housing developments, neighborhoods of six-story apartment buildings and private homes, and bucolic landscapes surrounding long-standing estates can be found within the borders of the Bronx.

The photographers represented in this exhibit are connected to the Bronx by birth, residency, work, or affinity. Each has a unique history, a particular point of view, and an evolving personal story. Who we are as individuals and as a group is represented in this exhibit. We are creating a photographic archive of the Bronx. The Bronx Photographers Collaborative hopes these images speak to, inform, provoke, and inspire you to join us in documenting, celebrating, and advocating for the borough that means so much to us and has contributed so much to who we are.

Partnerships Academy Workshops
Partnerships for Parks (PfP) invites you to join us at one of our many free and open to the public workshops offered year-round! They are a great way to meet, network, and learn the skills needed to get involved with, build, or sustain your park group.

Upcoming Workshop: Brooklyn Parks Connections

Are you a park volunteer or supporter in Brooklyn? Come to this workshop to meet other community members caring for local parks and hear about the amazing work park groups are doing across Brooklyn!

You will learn about ways to spruce up your neighborhood park, get funding, work with NYC Parks staff in your borough, and more. You may not know all the people that play a role in maintaining and supporting your park, so join us to meet some new faces, enjoy a free dinner, and get plugged into the larger network of park volunteers & staff in your borough.

Featured Speakers:

  • Jason P Conheeney, Deputy Director of Forestry-Brooklyn, NYC Parks Jason has pursued a career in arboriculture in the UK and US, gaining an in-depth knowledge of tree species and tree condition assessments.
