Ray Felix presents a dark, yet whimsical tale based on the life of Edgar Allen Poe while residing in the Bronx. Based on both fact and fiction, "Poe is the Raven" gives new light and insight on the secret life of Edgar Allan Poe.

Inspired by his visits to Poe Cottage, Ray Felix became intrigued by spiritual ether surrounding the Poe property and the stories told by the long time
tour guide of the Poe cottage. Felix's imprint "Bronx Heroes," takes stories from American History and transforms them into super heroes. Felix believes this allows Bronxites to appreciate everyday heroes from Bronx history and gain a greater understanding of their borough’s historically rich past.

New York City’s energy, architecture, and rich creative history is formidable and it continues to offer infinite inspiration for artists,” said Dale Chihuly. “I am excited to share my work with the residents and visitors who pass through New York City every year.”

The Rose Crystal Tower stands 31-feet tall and is composed of Polyvitro crystals and steel. Polyvitrois the artist’s term for a plastic material which he casts into individual chunks which resemble glass, but are lighter and more resilient. Chihuly used Polyvitro crystals in the artist’s landmark exhibition, Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000.

Dale Chihuly is an American artist known for revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement and elevating the perception of the glass medium from the realm of craft to fine art. Over his 50-year career, the artist has become known for his iconic glass sculptures and ambitious architectural installations in historic cities, museums and gardens around the world.

An exhibition of site-specific artworks by Andrea Arroyo will be on view at Maggie’s Garden and Friendship Garden in Harlem, through October 31, 2017.

Each piece, executed in mixed media and repurposed materials, is integrated within the natural environment of plants, grass and other elements of each garden. “Women with Wings” creates a multi-level conversation bridging local culture, nature and history that connects the past and the present.

Artworks include “Maggie’s Pearls of Wisdom”, a piece executed in acrylic, repurposed materials and beads, integrated with a Magnolia tree and inspired by the legacy of Maggie Burnett, beloved Harlem resident and founder of Maggie’s Garden, and “Women in Movement” a piece featuring multiple women silhouettes on multiple wheels hanging from light posts inside the garden.

Step back in time to 1865, when family patriarch Seabury Tredwell died at home in his second floor bedroom. Poignant scenes of death and grief recreated in the house will explore mid-19th century mourning customs. Pay your last respects at his deathbed upstairs, or join the mourning in the double parlor, hung with black crepe and set for a mid-19th century funeral. And stage your own “postmortem” photograph in our 19th century coffin. Then share with your friends on Instagram and Twitter. #mhmcoffin2017

Also on exhibit, Tredwell family photographs and mourning attire and accessories, including jewelry made of hair and jet, a black net veil, several bodices and shawls, and two 1870s mourning gowns.

Included with regular admission; reservations not required.

Please note: This exhibit is on view from noon to 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays and from noon to 5:00 p.m. on Fridays through Mondays, from October 5 through October 30.

This classic 1982 comedy horror anthology features five stories based on the EC and DC comics of the 1950s. The film conjures scares from traditional bogeymen and portents of doom. In one story, a monster escapes from its holding cell. Another focuses on a husband (Leslie Nielsen) with a creative way of getting back at his cheating wife. Other stories concern a rural man (Stephen King) and a visitor from outer space, and a homeowner (E.G. Marshall) with huge bug problems and a boozing corpse. This frighteningly hilarious movie is directed by the iconic George A. Romero and written by Stephen King, making his screenwriting debut.

<![CDATA[The Row Around Manhattan Fundraiser]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2017/10/07/the-row-around-manhattan http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2017/10/07/the-row-around-manhattan Date: October 7, 2017

Every year, the Village Community Boathouse mobilizes its fleet of traditional wooden rowing craft for a circumnavigation of the most famous island in the world.

The Row Around Manhattan (RAM) is a challenging and incredibly scenic 30-mile voyage that begins at our boathouse on the south side of Pier 40, circles Manhattan on the Hudson, East, and Harlem Rivers in a counter-clockwise direction, and ends with a spectacular party back at the boathouse.

The RAM is also our biggest fundraiser of the year; we ask each rower to raise or contribute a minimum of $100.

This year’s RAM will take place on Saturday, October 7 (rain date October 8) with a start time of 6:00 a.m. (crews need to be on hand by 5:30 a.m. at the latest).

Non-members are welcome to join us provided they have sufficient rowing experience or join us for at least three practice rows between now and the event. Non-rowing friends, family, and colleagues are encouraged to support the effort by volunteering at the event or by reserving a one of the four seats in our chase boat for a suggested $250 contribution.

Pull your oar for a good cause
Village Community Boathouse provides free rowing to the public throughout the rowing season from three locations: Pier 40, located in Hudson River Park in Manhattan, Prospect Park Lake in Brooklyn, and Van Cortlandt Park Lake in the Bronx. In addition VCB offers free community boatbuilding in its shop on Pier 40. VCB’s high school rowing and boatbuilding programs teach valuable maritime skills and provide youth with a community built on teamwork. VCB provides free public access to the waterways of New York City, promotes environmental stewardship of the harbor and estuary, revives the arts of small-boat seamanship and boatbuilding, and fosters a tradition of maritime hospitality and fellowship. Every year VCB introduces hundreds of New Yorkers and visitors young and old to the joys of rowing.

Registration

  • You must be 18 years old or older to participate in the row.
  • You must be an experienced rower and in reasonable physical condition. We row with the tide and take long breaks, so you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete.
  • Those wishing to choose their own crews may do so with the understanding that we may at some point ask people to switch boats to balance crew strengths.

As soon as you have raised at least $100 (see Fundraising below) email us at RAM@vcb.nyc or at ROW@vcb.nyc, or call Rob Buchanan at (917) 656-7285 to register.

Fundraising
To set up your fundraising page, click on "Join the Team" button on the fundrasing website.

The minimum amount you must raise to participate in the Row Around Manhattan is $100, but many people raise much more than that. We recommend setting a goal of at least $300. You might be surprised by how much you can raise with the right tools and a bit of effort.

VCB is here to support you and help you reach your fundraising goals. We provide fundraiser tip sheets, email support, and more. As a fundraiser for the Row Around Manhattan you are a champion of powerful, community-based rowing and boatbuilding. VCB is committed to helping you reach your goal.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water.

Exercising with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestow health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market is opening for its ninth season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market has engaged hundreds of local youths, distributed over 10 tons of fresh food ,recycled 24 tons of organic waste via its market compost dropoff operation, hosted 240 community market sessions, delivered 550 cooking demonstrations, 16 bread baking workshops and more in its eight seasons of operation.

2017 brings several new initiatives to the Market. This season, our newly formed food justice collective will introduce food justice activities around the newly constructed food justice mural. The market continues to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. Through strategic partnerships with local partners, the markets have introduced bus stop and subway advertisements, author readings in our children's garden, and weekly deliveries to Head Start and hospital outpatient centers. Our Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains takes place in the cooking island area in September. The markets will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, local eggs and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs: The Mixed Basket Weekly and Institutional Basket Program.

An exhibition of site-specific artworks by Andrea Arroyo will be on view at Maggie’s Garden and Friendship Garden in Harlem, through October 31, 2017.

“Women with Wings” will feature a series of artworks inspired by the women of New York, including the historical and contemporary women who make Uptown Manhattan a diverse and vibrant community.
