Culled from the ongoing series “Jewels from The Hinterland” (2013–present), this exhibition renders verdant alcoves and expansive green spaces throughout New York City, as well as select sites across the United States. Featuring black and brown artists, writers, culture workers, and thinkers positioned centrally in each image, A Collective Utterance offers an exploration into the tender interiors of individuals that constitute the creative communities of a city, through an associative, atmospheric mapping of its outdoor spaces.

Spanning sites such as Riverside Park, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Central Park, Green’s photographs present quiet, quotidian portraits—nuanced compositions that revel in her subjects’ subtle gestures, varied postures, and soft gazes. Documenting a community that is tight-knit yet sprawling in scope, Green’s project deeply engages with the historical and social role of photographic portrait, as a tool deployed to communicate, classify, or reinforce particular notions of subjectivity. Yet “Jewels from the Hinterland” destabilizes such structures, with photographic portraits that are as much a product of the subject’s agency, as they are of Green’s intent to portray their complexity. Through these insistently beautiful photographs, we access a kaleidoscopic consideration of what it means to find solace, comfort, and visibility within a community often relegated to the margins.

A project such as “Jewels from the Hinterland” takes on a particular type of urgency within the context of this sociocultural moment of seemingly interminable crisis, where the imaging of black and brown bodies is often deployed to a particular end. Whether portrayed in a mythical manner or as the sites of structural or physical trauma, black and brown bodies are ever in a state of being performed upon. But here, they are left to be. Collectively, these images attest to the tenderness and the strength, the beauty and the intricacy, that is present if only one were to spend time, and look and listen closely.

A Collective Utterance is organized by Oluremi C. Onabanjo.

Embark on an adventure back in time Van Cortlandt House Museum this summer at our Summer History Camp. Your child will learn about the Van Cortlandt Family’s and New York City’s important roles in the formation of our country all while having fun.

Campers are immersed in the everyday life of a child in 18th century as they wear period style clothing, and make and play 18th century toys and games. Typical chores such as churning butter, cooking, gathering wood and hauling water are all part of the full History Camp experience.

Children will also travel in time back to the early years of the Revolutionary War and experience the life of a soldier in General George Washington’s army. They will lend a hand with pitching tents and setting up camp. “Enlistment” in the army, military drill, and reconnaissance, are also part of the action.

Camp is lead by Van Cortlandt House Museum’s professional staff, talented living history volunteers, and college students studying material culture and history. Daily activities for Adventures in Time Summer History Camp are designed in keeping with New York State 4th grade curriculum standards and are appropriate for children ages 6 - 12. Campers bring their own lunches but VCHM provides daily snacks and drinking water. Adventures in Time is a technology-free experience. Campers may bring a cell phone with them to camp but all phones will be left with the administrative staff in the Welcome Center/Office during camp hours.

Adventures in Time Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade (or the equivalent) in the Spring of 2018. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and enrolls on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information or to request a registration form, email to: info@vchm.org

There will be a pre-screening performance at 7:00 p.m. The film begins at sundown.

Tampopo (Japan)
Directed by Juzo Itami; 1985, 114 mins.
Programmed by Film Forum.

This “Noodle Western” is an exploding piñata of gags on two eternal favorites – food and sex. Ramen joint owner Tampopo embarks on her relentless quest for the perfect noodle, with plenty of tangents on how to cook a delicious rice omelet before the night watchman comes in; how to enhance bedroom delights with a raw egg; and how dreams of yam sausage can assuage the aftereffects of a bullet fusillade. Don’t see this on an empty stomach. “Gleefully sensual and inventive. A garden of sensual delights that plays like a romp through a surreal amusement park. Creates a culinary empire of the senses while entertaining an audience like crazy.” – Michael Sragow, Film Comment

Van Cortlandt House Museum is owned by the City of New York Parks & Recreation, Operated by The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York, and a member of The Historic House Trust of New York City.
