In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

To RSVP for tour, please visit on.nyc.gov/gracietour.

Currently, Gracie Mansion is not offering group tours. If you are part of a private organization that would like to tour the house, please email your request, including the size of group, your name and the purpose of a tour, to gracieinfo@cityhall.nyc.gov and we will work to add you to one of the currently scheduled tours.

Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.

Highlights of this tour include McGowan's Pass, Fort Clinton, Nutter's Battery, and the Harlem Meer.

The tour route involves many hills and stairs, and some uneven terrain. The tour starts at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (inside the park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues), and ends near the park perimeter at 106th Street and Fifth Avenue.

For weather cancellation and other ticket policies, please review the Central Park Conservancy's policies carefully.

Groups of seven or more must schedule a custom tour three weeks in advance at tours@centralparknyc.org.For more information, please review the Frequently Asked Questions.

More Art premieres NYsferatu: Symphony of a Century by Andrea Mastrovito, a spectacular, hand-animated, silent film that combines music and community engagement to create a powerful and poignant statement about the horrors of the unknown and the inspiring search for liberty.

Resetting Friedrich W. Murnau’s classic 1922 film Nosferatu in contemporary New York City, Mastrovito and his team of 12 artists have created over 35,000 original drawings to replicate the beautifully eerie flickering shutter effect of early cinema. The re-imagined storyline and title cards of NYsferatu were made in collaboration with recent immigrants and English-as-new-language learners.

Musical improvisation by CUP. Featuring Nels Cline of Wilco & Yuka C. Honda of Cibo Matto

The artwork featured will focus on the following themes: The drive to feed one’s family, to provide a decent shelter for self and loved ones, to belong, and to leave a legacy.

The event intends to showcase the similarities and differences of Ugandans’ daily life compared to that of an American displaced in the Bronx. Of the 3.2 million foreign born residing in NYC, the Bronx is home to the largest concentration of African born immigrants compared to other boroughs.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water.

Exercising with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestow health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market is opening for its ninth season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market has engaged hundreds of local youths, distributed over 10 tons of fresh food ,recycled 24 tons of organic waste via its market compost dropoff operation, hosted 240 community market sessions, delivered 550 cooking demonstrations, 16 bread baking workshops and more in its eight seasons of operation.

2017 brings several new initiatives to the Market. This season, our newly formed food justice collective will introduce food justice activities around the newly constructed food justice mural. The market continues to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. Through strategic partnerships with local partners, the markets have introduced bus stop and subway advertisements, author readings in our children's garden, and weekly deliveries to Head Start and hospital outpatient centers. Our Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains takes place in the cooking island area in September. The markets will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, local eggs and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs: The Mixed Basket Weekly and Institutional Basket Program.

NYC Compost Project programs are implemented by DSNY-funded teams at seven host organizations, including Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Big Reuse, Earth Matter NY, Lower East Side Ecology Center, Queens Botanical Garden, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, and The New York Botanical Garden. Hallett Nature Sanctuary is the smallest of the park's three woodland landscapes. Closed to the public in 1934, the Hallett Nature Sanctuary remained mostly untouched until 2001, when Central Park Conservancy took up a more comprehensive program of restoration and maintenance. Now, visitors can use the rustic trail to view native plantings that attract birds and other wildlife. Join our guides for this exclusive tour of the Hallett Nature Sanctuary, open to visitors only on Central Park Conservancy guided tours and during limited open hours.

The tour route involves wood-chipped trails and some hills. The tour starts and ends at the Dairy Visitor Center (mid-Park between 64th and 65th Streets)

About the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre

The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre was imported to the U.S. in 1876 as Sweden’s exhibit for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The enchanting Swedish architecture and craftsmanship of the structure, suggestive of a model schoolhouse, caught the eye of Frederick Law Olmsted, who brought it to Central Park in 1877

A traveling marionette company was founded in 1939 and in 1947 the Swedish Cottage became home to the company. In 1973, a permanent theater was constructed inside the Swedish Cottage, designed for marionette performances. This weekly class will take place on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. from June 3 to October 14 (except July 1 and September 2).

Resembling a historic building foundation, Circadia also mimics the park's rolling hills and the natural rhythms found in nature.

This exhibition and event are made possible by the Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant, which supports the creation of artworks by New York City-based emerging artists at 10 parks that are highly visible, but underserved by cultural programming. The UNIQLO grant program will transform these locations into engaging art destinations with a series of rotating exhibitions and community events through 2019.
