Closed to the public in 1934, the Hallett Nature Sanctuary remained mostly untouched until 2001, when Central Park Conservancy took up a more comprehensive program of restoration and maintenance. Now, visitors can use the rustic trail to view native plantings that attract birds and other wildlife. Join our guides for this exclusive tour of the Hallett Nature Sanctuary, open to visitors only on Central Park Conservancy guided tours and during limited open hours.

For the Birds! is an elementary education program that teaches environmental awareness and appreciation of nature through the study of birds. During a four-, eight-, or 16-week session, public and private school students in grades two through four learn about their natural environment through classroom lessons, outdoor field trips, and a conservation project designed to improve bird habitat in the local community.

For the Birds! exposes students, usually for the first time, to the idea that their own neighborhoods provide valuable habitat to birds and other urban wildlife.

In 1998, Van Cortlandt Park was designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) in New York State by National Audubon. About 230 different bird species have been recorded in Van Cortlandt Park and over 60 species breed here, as determined by the 2006 Breeding and Migrating Bird Census Project in Van Cortlandt Park—a study of an Important Bird Area conducted by NYC Audubon. Breeders include the great-horned owl, eastern wood-pewee, great crested flycatcher, northern rough-winged swallo, and rose-breasted grosbeak with the American robin and the gray catbird, being the most populous breeding species.

And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market is opening for its eighth season of healthy food, activities, education, and food justice programming.

This year, the market will continue to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. We have also worked feverishly to improve the environment and delivery of services to market shoppers through strategic improvements in the physical infrastructure and by partnering with The Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation to increase our local visibility and foot traffic in the markets. That partnership will offer us additional market days at sister market sites in the immediate community, and to host several cultural festivals in the market and garden, author readings in the childrens garden, bike tours which complement our natural programming, and increase advertising and promotions of both markets.

The Large Market will continue its Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains at the newly-improved cooking island area in September; offer eggs and herbs for sale from the Hattie Carthan chicken coops and new herbal farm, and will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, eggs, and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs—The Mixed Basket weekly Program and Institutional Basket Program.

Quiet like a mountain, moving like a river, Tai Chi is a sequence of gentle movements based on images found in nature. In this multi-level class, Irving Yee, a member of the William CC Chen Tai Chi School, introduces students to the internal martial arts, and promotes an awareness of its health benefits.

Students split into groups according to their level of expertise, exploring movements at their own pace, whether as beginners or as more advanced students of Tai Chi. A suburban home has become physically animated by a vengeful human soul looking to stir up trouble from beyond the grave, and it's up to three adventurous kids from the neighborhood to do battle with the structural golem in this comically frightful tale, directed by Gil Kenan and featuring the voices of Steve Buscemi, Nick Cannon, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Kevin James. DJ Harvard (voice of Mitchel Musso) lives directly across the street from a most unusual house. A malevolent entity that longs to feed on the energy of the living, the once peaceful house that looms ominously outside of DJ's bedroom window would like nothing more than the chance to feast on the children of the neighborhood. As Halloween begins to draw near and the children of the neighborhood prepare for another long night of trick-or-treating, it appears as if it may be the house that is in for the biggest treat of all. Now, with the adults turning a deaf ear to DJ's strange findings, it's up to the brave young boy and his faithful friends Chowder (voice of Sam Lerner) and Jenny (Spencer Locke) to break through the barrier of the supernatural and defeat the powers of darkness before the house grows too powerful to fight.

Get a pumpkin: Bring a pumpkin that weighs about 8 pounds after it’s carved; that’s approximately the size of a soccer ball. Mini or extra-large pumpkins cannot be accepted for the flotilla.

Get creative: All pumpkins must come with tops and be gutted and carved at home. Jack-o’-lanterns with artificial decorations, such as paint, glitter, marker, food dye, paper, plastic, light bulbs, candles, or floats cannot be accepted for the flotilla. A light and floating device will be provided when you register your jack-o’-lantern at the event.

Drop off your pumpkin: We will have two designated drop-off areas near the Dana Discovery Center between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Space in the flotilla is limited to 50 pumpkins, so make sure your creation meets all the requirements. Members-only Perk: pre-register online to reserve space in the flotilla for your pumpkin by Friday, October 28. Please remember to bring your membership card.

Please note: Pumpkins in our flotilla cannot be returned. Thank you for your contribution to our event.

Volunteer Teachers
Audubon New York’s For the Birds! Program is looking for volunteer teachers for all five boroughs of NYC. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Rich Santangelo, For the Birds! Education Program Manager by email at rsantangelo@audubon.org or by phone at (212) 979-3077.
