Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their workouts, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Saturday morning walks begin at 8:30 a.m.

The Poe Park Visitor Center proudly presents Be: Women of Color Exhibition, for Women’s History Month!

Artist Walter Cruz's exhibition, Be: Women of Color, is a collection of acrylic works that depict women living their everyday lives. The simplified forms serve as a slightly blank slate for viewers to imagine themselves as the subjects. Complimentary colors have been chosen as the palettes to create a welcoming presence within each piece.

We are reflections of each other. Let's hold one another as such.

“Icons in their Own Right”, an art installation by Makeba "KEEBS" Rainey, seeks to remedy historic erasure, champion cultural representation, and reinforce identity and pride.

Makeba’s artistry is heavily influenced by hip-hop culture and Black consciousness. She carefully chooses each photograph of her characters to reflect a demeanor of confidence and power. She then selects an African-themed design that best contextualizes each figure’s attitude, creating an a exchange of multiple layers and emotions. We hope visitors will be inspired, among others, by President Obama resting in his power, Grace Jones posing confidently, Solange’s exhibiting quiet strength, and Langston Hughes looking casually amused. These are meant to be faces of mastery, intrigue, and calm, culminating in a rainbow of Black excellence that resonates with every walk of life.

This exhibit will be on view at the Old Stone House at Washington Park on Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., or by appointment.

About the Artist
Makeba “KEEBS” Rainey is a Harlem native inspired by her community and fellow emerging visual and performance artists. She is the founder of Black Capital Coalition (BCC), which promotes both visual and performance artists through creative collaborations between artists, businesses, and cultural institutions.

Co- Curated by Monica O. Montgomery, Museum of Impact and Katherine Gressel, Old Stone House & Washington Park.

It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

Although the historic Billopp House aka Conference House was built c. 1680 and restored as a museum house in 1926, it did not receive official NYC landmark designation protection until 1967.

With the tragic loss of New York’s original Pennsylvania Station, the famed architectural gem by the acclaimed architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White in 1963 galvanized the preservation community to begin advocating for the passage of a landmark protection law. Initially, the effort was slow to gain broad support, but the demolition of the Brokaw Mansion (among others along 5th Avenue) pushed the City Council to draft and approve the City’s first landmark protection bill. It was signed into law by Mayor Robert F. Wagner on April 19th 1965.

A flurry of landmark designation took place in the early years of the new law. In 1965, the City designated 39 buildings, with the first building to receive designation: the 300 year-old Pieter Claesen Wyckoff House in Brooklyn, which is considered the oldest surviving built structure in NYC. The following year over 100 buildings received designation. And in 1967, 80 structures received designation including the Conference House along with 18 notable and significant structures on Staten Island. Among these the nearby Seguine Mansion in Princes Bay and the Poillon House (aka Fredrick Law Olmsted House) in Eltingville.

Fifty years later, in large part to this landmark protection, these structures are still proudly standing. They preserve Staten Island’s rich history and architecture.

Join us for a talk and photographic presentation of the "NYC Landmarks Class of 1967" in the historic Conference House kitchen.

Visitors to the exhibit are invited to step into the life of a newly-arrived immigrant through the door of some personal artifacts. Historic regional maps and artistic world maps help relate the story. The exhibit includes a world map with the heading, "Where are you from?" . The Poe Park Visitor Center proudly presents Be: Women of Color Exhibition, for Women’s History Month.

Artist Walter Cruz's exhibition, Be: Women of Color is a collection of acrylic works that depict women living their everyday lives. The simplified forms serve as a slightly blank slate for viewers to imagine themselves as the subjects. Complimentary colors have been chosen as the palettes to create a welcoming presence within each piece.

We are reflections of each other. Let's hold one another as such. Join Walter Cruz for a talk about his work and an opportunity to meet and greet the artist.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

Artist Walter Cruz's exhibition, Be: Women of Color, is a collection of acrylic works that depict women living their everyday lives.
