Join Wave Hill’s Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions.

In the main gallery, (Not So) Still Life presents novel ways that contemporary artists are transforming the still life genre to engage with current culture. As a subject, the still life has remained popular since the early Renaissance, featuring compositions of natural and inanimate objects often presented with allegorical connotations. Today, artists are creating new variations by working in photography and sculpture to conflate interior space with landscape, or by using video and animation to convey still life in motion. Artists include Adam Brent, Elizabeth Bryant, Nicole Cohen, Ori Gersht, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Sue Johnson, Laura Letinsky, Beth Lipman, Erin O’Keefe,Donna Sharrett, Nicolas Touron, Michael Vahrenwald, Rodrigo Valenzuela, and Alex Verhaest. In the Sunroom Project Space, art collectiveDark Matters (Aimée Burg, Frank De León-Jones, and Anna Ritsch) create an interactive site for contemplating the invisible energy that fills the universe. Visitors may concoct their own wishes using materials available at stations throughout the space.

This tour is free with admission to the grounds.

City Parks Foundation offers a traveling puppet show, CityParks PuppetMobile, the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic Puss in Boots tale, with a twist. Once upon a time there lived a young man named Ferguson Mundingle. Fergus has just the bare essentials in life – a roof over his head, the clothes on his back, and his ever faithful pet cat. One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

Join us for a back-stairs tour of the Merchant’s House and explore the world of the Irish immigrants who worked as domestic servants for the Tredwell family.

You’ll climb the narrow staircase to the fourth-floor servants’ quarters and see where the Tredwells’ four Irish servants lived and did some of their work, “arguably the oldest intact site of Irish habitation in New York City” (Time Out New York). In the kitchen, you’ll meet 19-year-old Bridget Murphy who worked for the Tredwells in the 1850s. What did the servants do on their day off? Where did they shop? Where did they go to church? How did they find employment when they first arrived? Bridget will tell you why it would have been impossible to run a home like the Merchant’s House without her.

The Inwood Shakespeare Festival was conceived and developed by Ted Minos as a way to bring free professional theatre and music to the Northern Manhattan community. NYC Parks is delighted to partner with Moose Hall Theatre Company in their high-caliber productions of Shakespeare for the wonderful communities of Inwood, Washington Heights, Harlem, and beyond!

“Comedy, love and a bit with a dog, that’s what they want” – Henslow from Shakespeare in Love by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard

With William Shakespeare’s 400 anniversary in mind, we’re featuring what many believe to be his earliest play—Two Gentlemen of Verona. See star-crossed lovers, cross-dressing, betrayal, intrigue, clowns, and a real dog! . . . Comedy with a pastiche of romance, melancholy, and a startling conclusion.

Directed by Ted Minos. Technical director/Costumes, Catherine Bruce. Music, Luke St. Francis. Fight choreography, Ray A. Rodriguez. Assistant director, Maya Kates. Graphic art, Lee Kaplan. Produced by Ted Minos for Moose Hall Theatre Company.

Adonis Johnson Creed (Michael B. Jordan), the son of former heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, attempts to follow in his father's footsteps and become a boxing legend in his own right. Apollo died in the ring in the 1980s at the hand of Russian pugilist Ivan Drago, forcing Adonis to grow up without his dad in his life. The young man travels to Philadelphia to find his late father's nemesis-turned-best friend, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), in order to recruit him as a trainer. Balboa soon takes the young Creed under his wing and helps him get in shape for a shot at the title. Ryan Coogler directs this spin-off of the hugely successful Rocky franchise.

The Battery Conservancy will celebrate the grand opening of The Battery Oval with a weekend fair to engage the public in our region’s biodiversity and its emerging food and plant producers, illustrating The Battery’s core values.

Over the past two decades, The Battery has transformed New York’s birthplace park into an oasis of vast perennial gardens, educational farm plots, toxin-free lawns, and sinuous bicycle paths. The Battery Fair reinstates one of the oldest uses of civic space, the public market, at one of New York’s most prominent public parks. Since antiquity, public markets have protected and promoted fresh food, regional economies, and vibrant civic spaces. The Battery Fair creates a new public stage for local food and plant purveyors inspired by this history and dedicated to the ongoing revitalization of Lower Manhattan.

The fair will showcase innovations in agriculture, horticulture, food, and craft, emphasize the connections between food production and plant production, and support and connect local small batch entrepreneurs who are defining alternative, sustainable systems of natural production without compromising taste and beauty.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

About Freshkills Park
At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park is almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park to be developed in New York City in over 100 years. It also has a significant history as the site of the former Fresh Kills Landfill, which was the largest landfill in the world before closing in 2001. Since then, the landfill has been covered with layers of soil and infrastructure, and the site has become a place for wildlife, science, education, and art. As the park is built in phases, free tours and events provide early access for learning and recreation opportunities.
