This photo exhibit is the result of a "people to people" cultural exchange in which the artist participated last October. The artist and group visited Havana, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad. Music and art were everywhere and the crumbling Spanish architecture made for some interesting images. The various images convey his impressions of Cuba and the Cuban people in an apolitical manner. The recent presidential visit and talk of lifting the embargo lend context to the images.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market is opening for its eighth season of healthy food, activities, education, and food justice programming.

This year, the market will continue to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. We have also worked feverishly to improve the environment and delivery of services to market shoppers through strategic improvements in the physical infrastructure and by partnering with The Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation to increase our local visibility and foot traffic in the markets. That partnership will offer us additional market days at sister market sites in the immediate community, and to host several cultural festivals in the market and garden, author readings in the childrens garden, bike tours which complement our natural programming, and increase advertising and promotions of both markets.

The Large Market will continue its Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains at the newly-improved cooking island area in September; offer eggs and herbs for sale from the Hattie Carthan chicken coops and new herbal farm, and will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, eggs, and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs—The Mixed Basket weekly Program and Institutional Basket Program.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Quiet like a mountain, moving like a river, Tai Chi is a sequence of gentle movements based on images found in nature. In this multi-level class, Irving Yee, a member of the William CC Chen Tai Chi School, introduces students to the internal martial arts and promotes an awareness of its health benefits.

Students split into groups according to their level of expertise, exploring movements at their own pace, whether as beginners or as more advanced students of Tai Chi.

Sessions take place outdoors, weather permitting.

An ordinary man has to protect his children against alien invaders in this science fiction thriller, freely adapted from the classic story by H.G. Wells. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a dockworker living in New Jersey, divorced from his first wife Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) and estranged from his two children Rachel and Robbie (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin), of whom he has custody on weekends. On one such visitation, looking after the kids becomes a little more difficult when, after a series of strange lighting storms hit his neighborhood, Ray discovers that a fleet of death-ray robotic spaceships have emerged nearby, part of the first wave of an all-out alien invasion of the Earth. Rated PG-13.

In a city inhabited by anthropomorphic animals who have abandoned traditional predator/prey roles in favor of civilized coexistence, uptight rabbit police officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) is forced to work with charismatic fox con artist Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) to crack a major case involving the mysterious disappearance of some carnivorous citizens. But when a few of the missing critters reappear, having reverted to pre-enlightenment savagery, it exposes existing anti-carnivore prejudice among the city's herbivores that threatens to damage the fabric of their diverse metropolis.
