It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

Starting seeds indoors is an incredibly exciting and rewarding process: you can pick the exact exotic, funky, or heirloom variety that you’ve been ogling in the seed catalogs and it can result in healthier and hardier plants than the starts you might buy at your local garden store. However, many gardeners are scared away, thinking they need greenhouses or grow lights or the ultimate green thumb to successfully seed start. We say that’s hogwash! Come learn about the ins and outs of the seed starting process, start some seeds to take home, and take your garden knowledge to the next level.

Four 30 minute demos take place at noon, 1, 2, and 3pm.

Join NYC Parks for special concerts featuring Taikoza. They have created a new sound using the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Roughly translated, Taiko means "big drums" - and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings: big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance.

Let us know you're joining us. RSVP on Eventbrite at vancortlandttaikoza.eventbrite.com.

About Taikoza
Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the renaissance of taiko in Japan in the 60s and introduced Taiko to the world). The members of Taikoza have performed in some of the most prestigious halls and locations including Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, and Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall.

King of the Court is one of the most fun alternate ways of playing volleyball. Instead of playing 6 vs 6, teams consist of only 3 players. Typically, play ends after only 1 point and whoever wins that point stays on the court while another team replaces the one that lost the point. For this tournament, play will continue until one team has 3 points. Wins and losses will be counted for every team. Once a team loses 3 times, they will be eliminated from the tournament. Teams will register day-of.

This interactive workshop asks poets to craft poems that tell a story and act as witness. Poets strategically use form, music, and the “desire to see” to capture moments of the human experience, and to explore emotion, nature, place, social life, and the politics of voice. What story does your poem tell? Does your poem sound an alarm and allow the reader to become a witness to issues of race and immigration?

Participants will read and reference poets, such as Tyehimba Jess, Kimiko Hahn, Pedro Pietri, Adrienne Rich, and Sonia Sanchez among others, as craft models. Poets will experiment with/and or try at least one new form, which may include the blues, cento, haiku, villanelle, sonnet, and the zuihitsu.

RSVP at sdlatimerhouse.eventbrite.com.

Join us for a tour of America's greatest concentration of original Greek revival buildings: Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden.

Sailor’s Snug Harbor was established in 1833 as America’s first charitable institution devoted to the care of retired seamen. When financial pressures forced Snug Harbor to relocate over a century later, the institution left behind a remarkable assemblage of Greek revival and Victorian buildings located on 130 verdant acres overlooking New York Harbor. The City of New York acquired the site in the 1970s and established the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, providing artists’ studios, performance halls and exhibit spaces.

Your immersive tour will explore the history of the site, urban architectural preservation, the aesthetics of monumentalism, and a thousand and one unique design elements of our buildings, among the first of New York City's landmarks. The tour will finish with a viewing of current exhibitions in the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art.

As urbanization increases, connected natural areas become vitally important in sustaining biological diversity and allowing plant and animal species to move from place to place.

NYC-based naturalists Gabriel Willow and David Burglead lead a revealing exploration through the Raoul Wallenberg Forest in Riverdale Park and Wave Hill’s Abrons Woodland to see firsthand how human activity, invasive plants, and other factors have shaped the local ecology. Along the way, expect to see a surprising variety of trees, wildflowers, insects, birds and other animals that have successfully adapted to their urban habitats.
