Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

In an idealized New York City during the early '60s, Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) is a charming socialite with a youthful zest for life who lives alone in a nearly bare apartment. She has such a flippant lifestyle that she won't even give her cat a name, because that would be too much of a commitment to a relationship. Maintaining a childlike innocence yet wearing the most perfect of designer clothes and accessories from Givenchy, she spends her time on expensive dates and at high-class parties. She escorts various wealthy men, yet fails to return their affections after they have given her gifts and money. Holly's carefree independence is changed when she meets her neighbor, aspiring writer Paul (George Peppard), who is suffering from writer's block while being kept by a wealthy woman (Patricia Neal). Just when Holly and Paul are developing their sweet romance, Doc (Buddy Ebsen) appears on the scene and complicates matters, revealing the truth about Holly's past. Breakfast at Tiffany's was nominated for several Academy awards, winning Best Score for Henry Mancini and Best Song for Johnny Mercer's classic tune "Moon River".

Meet artist Wendy Klemperer at her public art exhibition Shadow Migration as part of LIC Arts Open.

Shadow Migration exhibits animal silhouettes cut from steel plates and installed throughout the park. Klemperer investigates animal populations that were threatened in the 20th century but are now rebounding and showing up in “our backyard”. Wild animals are finding their way into suburban and urban environments as human populations sprawl into their natural habitats. While many species have been devastated, some are adapting and thriving on the largesse of urban life. Hawks dive from high rise cornices to feast on the rich urban population of pigeons and rats; bears walk through New Jersey neighborhoods; and just several blocks from Court Square Park, a coyote found its way to a rooftop in Long Island City.

Klemperer’s animal silhouettes are steel forms punctuated with cutouts in the shape of countries from around the world. Each animal is a melting pot, bearing countries on its body that are also represented in Queens’ population—the most diverse community in the world.

This exhibition was made possible by the Clare Weiss Emerging Artist Award.

The experienced boatbuilders of the Village Community Boathouse will lead volunteers in constructing a 14-foot-long Whitehall rowboat in Brooklyn Bridge Park's Community Room at 99 Plymouth. Named after the Lower Manhattan street that now ends at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, Whitehalls were the water taxis of their day, speedily ferrying passengers across the East River and to and from ships at anchor in the harbor. The shape and dimensions of this boat are drawn from a Whitehall built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1890.

Regular boatbuilding sessions will take place on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon until May 22. Spectators are more than welcome and volunteers are encouraged to join. No experience is necessary.

An artist reception for Dee Briggs in Foley Square will take place in the park on Thursday, May 19. The opening remarks will include Thomas Woltz, FASLA, Principal, Nelson Byrd Woltz; Jennifer Lantzas, Deputy Director of Public Art, NYC Parks; and the artist Dee Briggs.

Located in Thomas Paine Park, part of the larger Foley Square area in Manhattan’s Civic Center, these three monumental public artworks deal directly with Briggs’ fascination with geometry and a form of symmetry called chirality. Chirality is defined as a three-dimensional object that has no internal plane of symmetry along the x, y or z-axis, which means that the object is different from its reflection.

Growing up in western Pennsylvania’s 1970s industrial landscape had a profound impact on Briggs and inspired her deep affinity for industrial materials and processes. For this exhibition, she explored the possibilities and limitations of weathered steel.

This event is FREE and open to the public.

Three of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies are produced by the irreverent, surprising, and critically-acclaimed The Drilling Company: Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It with music by Natalie Smith, and Measure for Measure. The plays feature the greatest, funniest and noblest women of the canon—Beatrice, Rosalind, and Isabella—remarkable characters who, with close connections to other women, master true love and overcome misogyny and sexual harassment. In addition, the anniversaries of William Shakespeare’s birth (452nd) and death (400th) are honored with a daylong celebration.

City Parks Foundation offers a traveling puppet show, CityParks PuppetMobile, the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic Puss in Boots tale, with a twist. Once upon a time there lived a young man named Ferguson Mundingle. Fergus has just the bare essentials in life – a roof over his head, the clothes on his back, and his ever faithful pet cat. One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

Join NYC Parks for a special concert featuring Taikoza. Taikoza has created a new sound using the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums, and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings—big Drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance.

About Taikoza
Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the renaissance of Taiko in Japan in the 60s and introduced Taiko to the world). The members of Taikoza have performed on stages and parks around the world.

Three of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies are produced by the irreverent, surprising, and critically acclaimed The Drilling Company: Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It with music by Natalie Smith, and Measure for Measure. The plays feature the greatest, funniest, and noblest women of the canon—Beatrice, Rosalind, and Isabella—remarkable characters who, with close connections to other women, master true love and overcome misogyny and sexual harassment.

Annie is a young, happy foster kid who's also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. But everything's about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in.

Director Bill Condon brings Tom Eyen's Tony award-winning Broadway musical to the big screen in a tale of dreams, stardom, and the high cost of success in the cutthroat recording industry. The time is the 1960s, and singers Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose), and Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) are about to find out just what it's like to have their wildest dreams come true. Discovered at a local talent show by ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), the trio known as "the Dreamettes" is soon offered the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of opening for popular singer James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy).
