Plant Patterns features the work of Adam Frezza & Terri Chiao, Adrienne Elise Tarver, Karin Haas, Liesl Pfeffer, and Nick Wildermuth. The artists use plants’ impressive natural characteristics as a means to explore various themes in their graphic works. Domestic and wild flora have provided artists with inspiration for centuries. The diversity and multitude of plant colors, shapes, and repetitive forms, which evolved to lure pollinators, caution predators, and promote regeneration, are naturally appealing to artists’ sensibilities.

Since 2004, Row New York has taught summer rowing camps to 6th through 12th graders, beginners and competitors. Camps run out of the beautiful Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse in Manhattan and our newest rowing location, the Paerdegat Basin Launch in Brooklyn.

Campers join for many reasons – fitness, discovery of a new sport, a competitive college application – but ultimately find one common result, a team to call their own.

During our novice Crew Camp, your child will have the totally unique experience of learning to row on the Harlem River in Manhattan. Our 3-week camp focuses on fun, fitness, and teamwork while prioritizing safety on the water. Campers are lead by experienced coaches while learning basic rowing techniques and boat moving skills, on and off the water. No experience is necessary to join!

Closed to the public in 1934, the Hallett Nature Sanctuary remained mostly untouched until 2001, when Central Park Conservancy took up a more comprehensive program of restoration and maintenance. Alfred Hitchcock was at the top of his game when he directed Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in this sophisticated cross-country thriller. Bachelor Grant is a dapper, Madison Avenue ad executive who becomes a victim of mistaken identity and is soon on the run for his life. Saint’s a mysterious, blonde seductress who seems more than eager to help out the handsome fugitive. Classic set pieces play out at the U.N. headquarters and in an Indiana cornfield. The breathless climax finds Grant and Saint dangling from a presidential profile on Mt. Rushmore. (1959) 136 MIN. (NR) (WARNER BROS.)

Jenny Zhang and Alissa Nutting are two of the most rollicking and subversive writers in contemporary American letters.

Jenny Zhang, already well-loved as a poet, is poised to astound with her first story collection, Sour Heart, the inaugural publication of Lena Dunham’s Lenny imprint at Penguin Random House.

Alissa Nutting’s second novel, Made for Love, is a tale of sex dolls and technology, and Nutting’s humor is a mirror to our current American insanity.

Together, Zhang and Nutting’s singular voices will make six-foot waves across the East River.

More Art premieres NYsferatu: Symphony of a Century by Andrea Mastrovito, a spectacular, hand-animated, silent film that combines music and community engagement to create a powerful and poignant statement about the horrors of the unknown and the inspiring search for liberty.

Resetting Friedrich W. Murnau’s classic 1922 film Nosferatu in contemporary New York City, Mastrovito and his team of 12 artists have created over 35,000 original drawings to replicate the beautifully eerie flickering shutter effect of early cinema. The re-imagined storyline and title cards of NYsferatu were made in collaboration with recent immigrants and English-as-new-language learners. The film is accompanied by musical improvisations by The Dick Valentine Vampyre Jamboree, featuring Dick Valentine of Electric Six and James Wells and Quinn English of The Gay Blades.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

To RSVP for tour, please visit on.nyc.gov/gracietour.

Currently, Gracie Mansion is not offering group tours. If you are part of a private organization that would like to tour the house, please email your request, including the size of group, your name and the purpose of a tour, to gracieinfo@cityhall.nyc.gov and we will work to add you to one of the currently scheduled tours.

Cinderella Samba is a contemporary twist on the classic “Cinderella” fairy tale. The CityParks PuppetMobile production sets the timeless tale in the lush landscape of Brazil, where, thanks to the help of her fairy godmother, Cinderella attends Rio de Janeiro’s biggest Carnival gala and dances the samba with Prince Paulo himself. After Cinderella is forced to flee the gala just before midnight, the prince sets out to find the mystery woman who stole his heart, in hopes of marrying her.

The lively production features an original commissioned musical soundtrack that brings samba center-stage; handcrafted Carnival festival floats on parade; and one-of-a-kind marionettes donning their most vibrant Carnival costumes, created by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater in Central Park.

Nancy Blum, Amy Cheng and Elisabeth Condon each have an entire room for their paintings. Jill Parisi creates an installation for the entry foyer. In the Sunroom Project Space, Jan Mun combines digital and living media to explore the movement of plant species and the immigrant experience, while a window installation by David Rios Ferreira contains drawings and collages with cartoon-inspired characters, along with historical, cultural and contemporary pop references.

Currently, Gracie Mansion is not offering group tours. A moving and intimate portrait of courage under fire, WOMAN ON FIRE captures the extraordinary life and journey of NYC's first transgender firefighter. For Brooke Guinan, fighting fires runs in her blood – both her father and grandfather served in the FDNY. But as a transgender woman, her path to service has not been without obstacles. Earlier this year, Brooke gained more visibility when she was selected as grand marshal in NYC Pride, and she continues to be a marvelous role model and pioneer for LGBTQ rights. Come out to the park and experience Brooke’s powerful story alongside the community within the borough of Queens where she serves. Directed by Julie Sokolow.

Presented and programmed by NewFest: New York's LGBT Film & Media Arts Organization.

The event intends to showcase the similarities and differences of Ugandans’ daily life compared to that of an American displaced in the Bronx. Of the 3.2 million foreign born residing in NYC, the Bronx is home to the largest concentration of African born immigrants compared to other boroughs.
