The true-life story of a coach who tries to teach his players that there's more to life than basketball is brought to the screen in this sports drama. Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) was once a star player on the Richmond High School basketball team in Richmond, CA, and years later, after establishing himself in publishing and marketing, he returns to the school and to the team as the new basketball coach. Carter quickly sees that his work is cut out for him -- the team is having an awful season, and their fights off the court are more decisive than their play on the court. Rated PG-13

A high school football coach finds himself fighting for stakes much higher than the State Championship in this drama based on actual events. In 1971, a court order forces three high schools in Alexandria, Virginia (two white, one African-American), to integrate their student bodies and faculties for the first time. As a result, Coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton), longtime head coach of the T.C. Williams High School football team, is asked to step down, and Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is appointed to replace him as the school's first black faculty member. The new coach is hardly welcomed with open arms, either by the school's staff or the students, and the newly integrated team is full of players (both black and white) who have little trust or respect for one another. But Boone is determined to put a winning team on the field -- it's how he approaches the game, and his future depends on it. Against long odds, Boone helps his team overcome distrust and misunderstanding of their coach (and each other) as they become a gridiron force to be reckoned with.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. Led by singer-songwriter, Shira Kobren, Shira & Friends loves bringing its high energy, catchy tunes to its favorite kinds of audiences—the ones that love to dance along and become part of the show. Shira & Friends sing about topics that range from how to have the best day, to under-bed-monsters, to the power of dancing. The band released its EP of original songs, “When You’re A Kid,” in 2012. Shira believes that no one ever really outgrows the love of being silly or the joy of letting an imagination run wild, and she makes sure to get her audience members of all ages joining in the fun.

Kids & The Classics—a children’s interactive workshop—is offered prior to each performance. The children’s program is a 45-minute workshop that begins one hour before each performance.

Wave Hill hosts two stars from Showtime’s new hit Billions at a live taping of the podcast Person Place Thing. Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe and Emmy winner Paul Giamatti and Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild nominee Maggie Siff will join host Randy Cohen in historic Armor Hall, an intimate opportunity for guests to listen in on this conversation with two acclaimed artists. After the taping, which includes live, musical accompaniment by composer Nicki Denner on piano and Anton Denner on alto sax, guests will be invited to a cocktail reception and be able to stroll in the gardens after Wave Hill closes to the public, just as the summer light of late afternoon begins to deepen.

New York City has always been a favored location for film and television productions. Many viewers recognized Wave Hill’s iconic balustrade and view of the Hudson River, front and center when Billions shot several scenes here last autumn. Person Place Thing is an interview show based on the idea that people are especially engaging when they tell stories about something they care about. Each broadcast focuses on one person, one place, and one thing that are important to the show’s guests. Randy Cohen is a former New York Times Magazine “Ethicist” columnist and an Emmy award-winning TV writer for Dave Letterman, Rosie O’Donnell, and Michael Moore.

Zach learns Stine's identity when he is drawn to the writer's daughter Hannah (Odeya Rush), but soon discovers the dangerous secret inside their home -- the creatures from Stine's famous stories are real, and are kept locked away inside their original manuscripts. After an accident frees the monsters, Zach, Hannah, and their nerdy pal Champ (Ryan Lee) must work together with Stine to save their town from destruction.

Come to Van Cortlandt House Museum this summer and embark on an adventure back in time at our Summer History Camp. Your child will learn about the Van Cortlandt Family’s and New York City’s important roles in the formation of our country all while having fun.

Campers are immersed in the everyday life of a child in 18th century as they wear period clothing, and make and play 18th century toys and games. Typical chores such as churning butter, cooking, gathering wood, and hauling water are all part of the full History Camp experience.

Children will also travel in time back to the early years of the Revolutionary War and experience the life of a soldier in General George Washington’s army. They will lend a hand with pitching tents and setting up camp. “Enlistment” in the army, military drill, and reconnaissance, are also part of the action.

Camp is lead by Van Cortlandt House Museum’s professional staff, talented living history volunteers, and college students studying material culture and art education. Daily activities for Adventures in Time Summer History Camp are designed in keeping with New York State fourth grade curriculum standards and are appropriate for children ages six to 12.

Adventures in Time Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed second, third, fourth, or fifth grade (or the equivalent) in spring 2016. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Van Cortlandt House Museum is owned by NYC Parks, operated by The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York, and is a member of The Historic House Trust of New York City.

Clint Eastwood directs himself, as the gun-toting “Stranger With No Name,” in a frontier-set, revenge drama with mythical overtones. His revisionist views of the old West, subversion of the popular genre and a touch of misogyny proved controversial to some. Putting it plainly, John Wayne wasn’t high on “Drifter.” Eastwood was obviously inspired by those Italian-made, spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone, so expect twangy music, multiple shootings and a couple of deaths by bullwhip. Ouch! (1973) 105 MIN. (R) (UNIVERSAL)

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Saturday morning walks begin at 8:30 a.m.

This photo exhibit is the result of a "people to people" cultural exchange in which the artist participated last October. The artist and group visited Havana, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad. Music and art were everywhere and the crumbling Spanish architecture made for some interesting images. The various images convey his impressions of Cuba and the Cuban people in an apolitical manner. The recent presidential visit and talk of lifting the embargo lend context to the images.

Don't miss this amazing opportunity to discover a new discipline and find balance and relaxation in our beautiful park! Join our neighbors from the Taoist Tai Chi Society for an introductory practice of the different moves included in the basic Tai Chi set. Tai Chi is learned by doing: the instructor will demonstrate, then perform the moves with the class, and finally watch the students as they repeat them. Movements are believed to help calm the emotions, focus the mind, and strengthen the immune system.

People of all ages and conditions can learn.

RSVP here!

In the event of rain, Tai Chi will be moved into the 14th Street passage, on the High Line at 14th Street.
