In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

Partnerships Academy Workshops
Partnerships for Parks (PfP) invites you to join us at one of our many free and open to the public workshops offered year-round! They are a great way to meet, network, and learn the skills needed to get involved with, build, or sustain your park group.

Upcoming Workshop: No 501c3? No Problem! Intro to Fiscal Sponsorship

Is your park group looking for more fundraising and development opportunities but unsure if becoming a nonprofit is right for your group?

Come to this workshop to learn about another alternative: fiscal sponsorship! Our expert speakers will explain how your group can financially partner with an existing nonprofit to take advantage of their 501c3 status. This means more perks — access to charitable donations, grants, tax exempt status— and less paperwork.

At this workshop:

  • Learn the ins and outs of several fiscal sponsorship programs offered by different organizations
  • Hear from community members who have taken this step
  • Get tips for choosing a potential fiscal sponsor
  • Discover if fiscal sponsorship is right for your group

Featured speakers include: TBD

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their workouts, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Saturday morning walks begin at 8:30 a.m.

In the mid 19th century, New Yorkers, like the Tredwells, hosted neighbors and friends in their home to showcase the latest in mysticism and psychic entertainments. Spiritualism, which had become a phenomenon in 1848 thanks to the now-infamous Fox sisters, peaked in popularity in the years immediately after the Civil War. It is certainly no wonder: the loss of life was massive, spurring believers and skeptics alike to turn to Spiritualism — the belief that the living can talk to the dead — as one last chance for contact with a loved one, lost too soon.

In addition to providing comfort to the bereaved, Spiritualism grew as a popular form of parlor entertainment. We invite you to join renowned mentalist Kent Axell in the family’s Greek Revival double parlor as he takes us back in time 150 years to experience mind reading, magic, and mystery. Whether he answers your sealed questions, reads your mind — or controls it — you’re guaranteed to feel the haunting touch of one of history’s most obscure, and awe-inspiring, art forms.

This annual event brings together gardeners of all stripes to engage in the traditional activity of trading seeds.

Our seed heritage is as old as our love of great food and Brooklyn gardeners are savvy to the benefits of top quality, organic seeds. Heirloom varieties of tomatoes, lettuce, and root crops, as well as more esoteric and ethnically-diverse items, such as asian greens and amaranth, will be featured.

Donated Seeds from High Mowing Seeds, Fruition Seed, John Scheepers Kitchen Garden, Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co., - dozens of packs from outstanding companies.

Every person gets at least one pack of seeds for free. Bring seeds to swap - seeds you have saved yourself from plantings or never opened things you found you couldn't use.

Other event features include:

  • For sale: Hudson Valley Seed Co. Art packs - selected for city growing.
  • Special on Mache (corn salad) - earliest most cold tolerant of the micro-greens.
  • We will be offering seeds collected in our OSH landscape and gardens (pollinator plants, job's tears, agastache, etc.), leftovers that we re-ordered new, unusual things people have given us.
  • Information on how to save seeds, how to plant, and why heirloom and organic seeds are important. View seeds in their whole form - you can clean seeds yourself and take some home. A great activity for children.
  • Chat with other gardeners about what they plan to plant or perennials that work in the city. Browse our reference books.
  • Free catalogs from great seed companies, Fedco and Kitazawa, in addition to our sponsors and others.
  • Fedco Seeds - we will divide our Fedco seed packs that we will be planting in the OSH gardens so that you can plant what we are planting.
  • District 15 Garden Train is a new working-group to organize school gardens on a social level - pooling information to learn how to make school gardens more sustainable. With people entering and leaving every year, school gardens face specific challenges. Garden Train is interested in developing a model that can be implemented in every district in NYC. Stop by their table to discuss your ideas.
  • OSH Compost Club will train you on what belongs in the compost bin and what goes in curbside collection. You can become a Compost Club member and bring your kitchen waste to our bins in the garden and also become a member of the Old Stone House, receiving calendar updates and other benefits.
  • Seed Mosaics - always fun.
  • Blue Lotus Botanicals will offer wonderful Seedy Soaps and healing creams to sooth winter skin conditions.
  • Plan to stay for a spell - gardeners and catalogs, books, tea and seeds!

It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

Join us as we welcome the Year of the Earth Dog with a Chinese New Year Celebration! Adults and children alike will enjoy treats, tales, and traditional crafts as part of one of the biggest cultural celebrations in the world.

Families with children can participate in:
– Storytelling: Listen to the legend of Nien, hear about the Chinese zodiac, learn the many ways we celebrate the 15 days of the Lunar New Year, and discover the traits of 2017’s Fire Rooster and 2018’s Earth Dog.

– Crafts: Kids can make a lion’s head to ward off evil spirits, create a hong bao envelope to give and receive special treats, and practice writing chun lian and fu dao with Chinese characters.

– Parade: Families can join the parade to the NY Chinese Scholar’s Garden and hear cymbals, drums, and pop-it firecrackers scare off evil spirits.

– Food: Enjoy traditional foods like dumplings, spring rolls, niangao, and chrysanthemum tea. The pronunciation of niangao sounds like ‘year high’, which symbolizes a higher income, a higher position, the growth of children, and generally the promise of a better year. It is considered good luck to eat it during the Chinese New Year period.

Adults without kids can also participate in this immersive cultural celebration. With Ben Ng, our educator in Chinese calligraphy, you’ll enjoy more grown-up artistic activities like ink wash painting, chun lian writing, and shan shui (mountain painting), plus tours of the NY Chinese Scholar’s Garden and warm refreshments.

Wear red and gold when you come to Snug Harbor to celebrate Chinese New Year with us! We’ll see you soon. Gung hay fat choy!

Special thanks to the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and the Friends of the NY Chinese Scholar’s Garden.

“Icons in their Own Right”, an art installation by Makeba "KEEBS" Rainey, seeks to remedy historic erasure, champion cultural representation, and reinforce identity and pride. Join us and the artist at the opening night!

Makeba’s artistry is heavily influenced by hip-hop culture and Black consciousness. She carefully chooses each photograph of her characters to reflect a demeanor of confidence and power. She then selects an African-themed design that best contextualizes each figure’s attitude, creating an a exchange of multiple layers and emotions. We hope visitors will be inspired, among others, by President Obama resting in his power, Grace Jones posing confidently, Solange’s exhibiting quiet strength, and Langston Hughes looking casually amused. These are meant to be faces of mastery, intrigue, and calm, culminating in a rainbow of Black excellence that resonates with every walk of life.

This exhibit will be on view at the Old Stone House on Fridays, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., or by appointment.

About the Artist
Makeba “KEEBS” Rainey is a Harlem native inspired by her community and fellow emerging visual and performance artists. She is the founder of Black Capital Coalition (BCC), which promotes both visual and performance artists through creative collaborations between artists, businesses, and cultural institutions.
