Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their workouts, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Saturday morning walks begin at 8:30 a.m.

The Bronx is both a place and a collection of metaphors, a peninsula attached to the mainland in a city of islands. In many ways, it is defined by its diversities—social, demographic, geographic and temporal. Hospitals, museums, universities, formal gardens, beaches, parks, and historical sites are prominent features of the landscape. Massive public housing developments, neighborhoods of six-story apartment buildings and private homes, and bucolic landscapes surrounding long-standing estates can be found within the borders of the Bronx.

The photographers represented in this exhibit are connected to the Bronx by birth, residency, work, or affinity. Each has a unique history, a particular point of view, and an evolving personal story. Who we are as individuals and as a group is represented in this exhibit. We are creating a photographic archive of the Bronx. The Bronx Photographers Collaborative hopes these images speak to, inform, provoke, and inspire you to join us in documenting, celebrating, and advocating for the borough that means so much to us and has contributed so much to who we are.

A Collective Utterance is a solo exhibition of photographs by the artist Naima Green, presenting a selection of images culled from her ongoing series “Jewels from The Hinterland” (2013–present). With black and brown artists, writers, culture workers, and thinkers positioned centrally in each image, the exhibition spans green spaces throughout New York City—such as Riverside Park, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Central Park—as well as select sites across the United States.

With each photograph, Green offers a statement of quietude, solace, insistence, and strength, making visible a community purportedly relegated to the margins, yet who critically inform dominant tastes and trends. These gentle, nuanced compositions are particularly urgent within the context of seemingly interminable sociopolitical crisis, where black and brown bodies are continually imaged as sites of violence and trauma. Within the framework of A Collective Utterance, each individual is left to be—in all of their tenderness, complexities, and intricacies.

A Collective Utterance is organized by Oluremi C. Onabanjo.

A lecture given by Urban Planner/Historian Thomas J. Campanella of Cornell University.

This talk will focus on the largely forgotten history of Brooklyn's Marine Park, an ancient estuarine landscape and native American settlement site that became a kind of "blank slate" for visionary proposals in the early 20th century. Among these was Congressman Sol Bloom's plan for a 1932 Washington Bicentennial Exposition. Meant to be the largest fair ever staged, it would feature pavilions for 46 nations, a Knute Rockne stadium for 200,000 spectators and a centerpiece tower "taller and greater than either the Woolworth Building or the Eiffel Tower.” Though the initiative fell apart, it set into motion a campaign that eventually led to the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Before and again after Bloom, Marine Park was the focus of efforts to build a vast urban playground to complement the passive, pastoral landscape of Prospect Park. Stretching from Fillmore Avenue to Plum Beach, the 1,700-acre complex was laid out as a recreation ground of industrial scale—to tap and defuse the restless energies of the urban working classes, and impart paternalistic lessons of discipline, cooperation and civic virtue.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM for today’s New York City that imagines our fellow New Yorkers - the buskers, the lovers, the neighbors, the leaders - as the wild and magical Spirits of Shakespeare's classic comedy. It is a celebration of the energy, danger, uniqueness and soul of the place that we call home, and its potential to evoke in all of us a wondrous transformation. This play dares to show us the extraordinary magic and everyday miracles that are hidden in plain sight.

Onabanjo.

Village Community Boathouse is offering free rowing in traditional, handmade wooden rowboats Fridays this summer from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. You will get 25 minutes to explore beautiful Van Cortlandt Park Lake.

Rowing is a beautifully simple, healthy, and empowering sport, and the waters of the lake are an ideal place to pursue its pleasures.

Who can particpate
Community rowing is open to all, although some physical dexterity is required to get in and out of the boats. The focus of the program is recreation in a safe and respectful environment. Each adult must sign a waiver; children must be accompanied by a parent. Life jackets are provided—and must be worn!

Volunteers are greatly appreciated! To help with set up, meet at the container in the parking lot south of the lake at 4pm. Volunteers get a chance to learn to use our sleek and speedy sliding-seat boat.

Cost
It’s free. Village Community Boathouse is a nonprofit organization entirely run by volunteers. While no commitment is required from those who row with us, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. Please consider making a donation of money or time to make our programs possible.

About Village Community Boathouse
Village Community Boathouse is a nonprofit based on Pier 40 at the west end of Houston Street. At the boathouse we build, maintain, and row a fleet of traditional wooden rowboats. Our rowing program on the Hudson uses Whitehall Gigs, 25 foot long boats for four rowers which can handle the conditions and traffic of the harbor. We have programs using the smaller boats in Prospect Park in Brooklyn and Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The boats are traditional handmade wooden rowboats of a variety of designs. Some of them were built at Pier 40 as part of our Community Boatbuilding program.

Baadassss! (Directed by Mario Van Peebles, USA, 109 min.)
"Baadasssss" is an American biopic written/produced/directed by and starring Mario Van Peebles. The film is based on the struggles of Van Peebles’ father Melvin Van Peebles as he attempts to film and distribute Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, a film that was widely credited with showing Hollywood that a viable African-American audience existed, and thus influencing the creation of the Blaxploitation genre.

This film will be preceded by a short film from the HCCI/Tribeca Teen Filmmaker Bootcamp. In partnership with ImageNation, and InJoy Enterprises.

Enjoy pre-show music of Earth, Wind and Fire as interpreted by artists including Bruce "Big Daddy" Wayne, Keith Anthony Fluitt, Rachel Walker, Barry Antione, and others backed by this year’s Soul Train Tribute House band led by drummer extraordinaire Les Cleveland.
