Village Community Boathouse is offering free rowing in traditional, handmade wooden rowboats Fridays this summer from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. You will get 25 minutes to explore beautiful Van Cortlandt Park Lake.

Rowing is a beautifully simple, healthy, and empowering sport, and the waters of the lake are an ideal place to pursue its pleasures.

Who can particpate
Community rowing is open to all, although some physical dexterity is required to get in and out of the boats. The focus of the program is recreation in a safe and respectful environment. Each adult must sign a waiver; children must be accompanied by a parent. Life jackets are provided—and must be worn!

Volunteers are greatly appreciated! To help with set up, meet at the container in the parking lot south of the lake at 4pm. Volunteers get a chance to learn to use our sleek and speedy sliding-seat boat.

Cost
It’s free. Village Community Boathouse is a nonprofit organization entirely run by volunteers. While no commitment is required from those who row with us, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. Please consider making a donation of money or time to make our programs possible.

About Village Community Boathouse
Village Community Boathouse is a nonprofit based on Pier 40 at the west end of Houston Street. At the boathouse we build, maintain, and row a fleet of traditional wooden rowboats. Our rowing program on the Hudson uses Whitehall Gigs, 25 foot long boats for four rowers which can handle the conditions and traffic of the harbor. We have programs using the smaller boats in Prospect Park in Brooklyn and Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The boats are traditional handmade wooden rowboats of a variety of designs. Some of them were built at Pier 40 as part of our Community Boatbuilding program.

Baadassss! (Directed by Mario Van Peebles, USA, 109 min.)
"Baadasssss" is an American biopic written/produced/directed by and starring Mario Van Peebles. The film is based on the struggles of Van Peebles’ father Melvin Van Peebles as he attempts to film and distribute Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, a film that was widely credited with showing Hollywood that a viable African-American audience existed, and thus influencing the creation of the Blaxploitation genre.

This film will be preceded by a short film from the HCCI/Tribeca Teen Filmmaker Bootcamp. In partnership with ImageNation, and InJoy Enterprises.

Enjoy pre-show music of Earth, Wind and Fire as interpreted by artists including Bruce "Big Daddy" Wayne, Keith Anthony Fluitt, Rachel Walker, Barry Antione, and others backed by this year’s Soul Train Tribute House band led by drummer extraordinaire Les Cleveland.

Join us this summer for special movie screenings of Ingmar Bergman films, part of a worldwide celebration to mark the 100-year anniversary of the birth of renowned director and writer Ingmar Bergman (1918 - 2007).

Bring a blanket and picnic and enjoy the summer night.

Smiles of a Summer Night
After fifteen films that received mostly local acclaim, the 1955 comedy Smiles of a Summer Night (Sommarnattens leende) at last ushered in an international audience for Ingmar Bergman. In turn-of-the-century Sweden, four men and four women attempt to navigate the laws of attraction. During a weekend in the country, the women collude to force the men’s hands in matters of the heart, exposing their pretensions and insecurities along the way. Chock-full of flirtatious propositions and sharp witticisms delivered by such Swedish screen legends as Gunnar Björnstrand and Harriet Andersson, Smiles of a Summer Night is one of cinema’s great comedies.

The Bronx is both a place and a collection of metaphors, a peninsula attached to the mainland in a city of islands. In many ways, it is defined by its diversities—social, demographic, geographic and temporal. Hospitals, museums, universities, formal gardens, beaches, parks, and historical sites are prominent features of the landscape. Massive public housing developments, neighborhoods of six-story apartment buildings and private homes, and bucolic landscapes surrounding long-standing estates can be found within the borders of the Bronx.

The photographers represented in this exhibit are connected to the Bronx by birth, residency, work, or affinity. Each has a unique history, a particular point of view, and an evolving personal story. Who we are as individuals and as a group is represented in this exhibit. We are creating a photographic archive of the Bronx. The Bronx Photographers Collaborative hopes these images speak to, inform, provoke, and inspire you to join us in documenting, celebrating, and advocating for the borough that means so much to us and has contributed so much to who we are.

Over the course of the 1800s, weddings in New York City evolved from intimate private ceremonies to large, lavish affairs. This exhibition explores the changes in wedding customs as the 19th century progressed, including the trousseau, printed invitations, and the giving of gifts.

Highlights include Eliza Tredwell’s 1820 empire-style embroidered cotton wedding dress and Sarah Ann Tredwell’s 1872 silk bridal dress made in Paris, the highest fashion of the post-Civil War bustle period. Accessories include silk wedding boots, and earrings, corsage, and headpiece of wax orange blossoms.

This exhibition is on view on Thursdays through Mondays (except major holidays) from May 3 to July 30. The house is open on Thursdays from noon to 8:00 p.m. and Fridays through Mondays from noon to 5:00 p.m.

It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

Who are the helpers in your neighborhood? What are their superpowers? Do they have any secret identities? In this workshop, we’ll create capes or masks that celebrate the heroes right here in our own neighborhoods – parents, teachers, nurses, crossing guards, sanitation workers, and more.

Each participant will create a colorful logo with letters or symbols that represent someone important in their daily life, attaching the pieces onto a fabric cape they can actually wear. Participants may also be able to hide their secret identity by creating a matching felt mask.
