Calling all park lovers! This spring, the New York Junior League's Playground Improvement Project committee ("PIP") invites you to join them in rolling up your sleeves to help revitalize Corlears Hook Park!

Throughout five weekends in April and May New York Junior League volunteers and community volunteers will spend a day in the park (rain or shine) gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this highly-used space. All volunteers will be provided with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt.

Registration
All participants (ages 16 and older) must register in advance at nyjl.org/playground. Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project
For more than 25 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized, and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend cleanup days include landscaping and repairing the parks. PIP works with over 700 volunteers each season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community.

Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

The Bronx and La Villette are two very similar areas in the cities of New York City and Paris. Considered for a long time as dangerous areas, they are becoming very fashionable neighborhoods, where artists and families live. Their configuration has changed so much that now the two neighborhoods are literally the opposite of what they used to be.

The aim of the project The Bronx - La Villette is to give value to the work that has gone into these areas, in spite of the misconceptions people may have about them, and to highlight the diversity of these neighborhoods by showing everyday people from a local’s perspective.

Matteo Pellegrinuzzi is a photographer/cinematographer. He has been living in Paris for the past ten years, working between Paris and Italy on social issues. He studied the History of Cinema at the University of Pavia in Italy. Mr. Pellegrinuzzi has contributed to the making of many movies as a camera man and cinematographer since 2005, but photography is still his first love. His visit to the Bronx inspired this exhibition.

For only one day every year, the Queens Greenhouse opens its doors to give New Yorkers a sneak peek inside. Seize this rare opportunity to learn about the diverse array of plants growing in city parks.

Nestled among towering oak trees in Forest Park, the Queens Greenhouse and Nursery has served Parks for the past hundred years. Every year the greenhouse grows around 200,000 herbaceous plants (annuals and perennials) from seeds, plugs, liners, bare-root plants, and cuttings. Gardeners use these plants beautify the parks, playgrounds, beaches, and pools throughout Queens and Brooklyn.

Gardeners will provide visitors with information on the different species, how to care for them, and where to go to see them throughout the borough.

No reservations are needed; however Parks staff may limit the number of visitors allowed in each house at one time.

Join us for the last in a series of rare off-hours tours of the Merchant’s House. We’ll gather in the 1850s kitchen for coffee and a focused overview of the landmark Merchant’s House and its intact collection of more than 3,000 objects owned by the Tredwell family. We’ll then tour the house, including the rarely seen bedrooms on the 3rd floor (now staff offices), even peek up into the attic and open locked doors … and more. From late Federal to Greek Revival; Duncan Phyfe to Rococo Revival; whale oil to gas to kerosene, you’ll gain new insight and perspectives on these unique insider’s tours, learning about changing period styles and technologies and how they reflect the attitudes and values of the merchant class in mid-19th century New York City.

Changing Tastes in 19th Century Furniture
In the final tour of this series, we’ll discuss the finer points of the original Tredwell family collection of furniture and what it tells us about both the tastes and values of Antebellum New Yorkers and how growing international connections made lasting impact on design, trade, and international relations.

About presenter Anthony Bellov: Bachelor of Architecture, Pratt Institute; graduate, Museum Leadership program, Bank Street College; certified New York State real estate instructor/lecturer; long-time volunteer and board member of the Merchant’s House Museum, and an aficionado in 19th century American decorative arts and architecture.

It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

We’ll examine the physical conditions of the overgrown rock-outcrop area at the Roberto Clemente Community Garden and identify the plants, determining which to keep and which to remove. We’ll go into the kinds of plantings and people-centered spaces that might be possible, the techniques of site preparation and planting, and the care to give it over time.

This hands-on workshop will use the backdrop of the Fantastic Voyage exhibition to explore the history of the Green Revolution and the rise of industrial food production. We will take a closer look at how food has migrated from a source of health and wellness to a co-opted capitalist tool designed to create a dependency on (and some would say addiction to) processed foods and all of its sugar, salt and fat configurations.

Participants will learn how to make pomegranate-cherry gummies as an example of regaining a comprehensive understanding of food for sale versus the food we grow and/or prepare ourselves.

This workshop is offered as part of the Fantastic Voyage exhibition by artists Stefani Bardin and Assaf Tamir. The immersive installation explores the role of food production in our personal health and the health of the environment.

Community Rowing events are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds on site. The rows last, depending on river conditions and crew experience, between one and three hours.

Please arrive on-time as the crews will be assigned before 1PM. Bring extra water, a hat, and sunscreen as you will be rowing outdoors in the hot sun. Rowing is weather dependent and will be canceled for high winds, rain, or thunderstorms. All participants must sign a waiver and be able to climb a ladder.

Catch-and-release fishing is a great way to get outdoors and discover nature just a few blocks from home.

Our experienced Urban Park Rangers teach the ethics of fishing and the ecology of our waterways on every fishing program. You can try to hook a pumpkinseed sunfish, carp, or chain pickerel. Whether you choose to grab a simple bamboo pole at a quiet lake or join more advanced saltwater programs, we have a program that fits your skill level.

All equipment is provided; this program is recommended for ages 8 years and older. Participation is first-come, first-served.

The immersive installation at the Freshkills Park Studio + Gallery explores the role of food production in our personal health and the health of the environment.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.
