City Parks Foundation offers a traveling puppet show, CityParks PuppetMobile, the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic Puss in Boots tale, with a twist. Once upon a time there lived a young man named Ferguson Mundingle. Fergus has just the bare essentials in life – a roof over his head, the clothes on his back, and his ever faithful pet cat. One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

Three of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies are produced by the irreverent, surprising, and critically acclaimed The Drilling Company: Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It with music by Natalie Smith, and Measure for Measure. The plays feature the greatest, funniest, and noblest women of the canon—Beatrice, Rosalind, and Isabella—remarkable characters who, with close connections to other women, master true love and overcome misogyny and sexual harassment.

Come hear songs of nature and sprites in both familiar and undeservedly forgotten period music sung by members of the Bond Street Euterpean Singing Society – Anthony Bellov, Amy Gluck, Jane Elizabeth Rady, and Dayle Vander Sande – accompanied by pianist Jai Jeffryes. Presented by WNET and Indie Lens Pop Up

Join us for a preview screening of the documentary T-Rex by Zack Canepari and Drea Cooper. Seventeen-year-old Claressa "T-Rex" Shields came from the streets of Flint to reach the Gold Medal podium in London in 2012, the first time women were allowed to box in the Olympics, but as we see in this coming-of-age story, life outside the ring may be an even tougher fight.

After the screening there will be a Q & A with the producer of 'T-Rex', Sue Jaye Johnson, and NYC Parks boxing teacher Colleen Flood.

Sue Jaye Johnson is a documentary artist working in radio, photography, film and interactive technologies. A two-time Peabody Award winner, Johnson's work frequently looks at the role of women in society. Recently, she spearheaded an unprecedented collaboration between The New York Times, NPR, and WNYC to tell the story of the first women to box in the Olympic games. The series included the radio diary of the then unknown teenage boxer Claressa "T-Rex" Shields. Claressa’s diary, which aired on NPR’s "All Things Considered" in 2012, led her to work on a feature documentary about Claressa's journey from Flint, Michigan to the top of the podium in London. T-Rex premiered at SXSW in 2015 and will be on PBS's Independent Lens in August 2016.

Colleen Flood teaches Power Punch at the Tony Dapolito Recreation Center. Colleen started boxing in 2003 and started competing in 2005 on an amateur level. She competed in numerous competitions in New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, such as Challenge of Champions, Battle at the Pier, and Fight Night NJ.

Directed by Taylor Hackford, this biopic profiles the life of legendary musician Ray Charles. Despite humble beginnings and the loss of his eyesight due to glaucoma at the age of six, Charles, depicted by Jamie Foxx, would nonetheless become an icon in both the music industry and the civil rights era. While the film delves into his problems with drugs and women, the bulk of the story details his career. Rated PG-13.

NYC Parks will unveil NYC’s latest urban forest dataset. This is the most spatially accurate map of New York City’s street trees. Join NYC Parks, BetaNYC, TreesCount! partners, tree care volunteers, and other civic hackers to improve our understanding of, and plan for the future of our City’s urban forest!

To spark and sustain public engagement, NYC Parks launched the TreesCount! 2015 campaign. To date, more than 2,300 New Yorkers have voluntreered helping complete the first comprehensive map of our city’s street trees. Now, we are looking for data scientists, statisticians, developers, designers, visualizers, cartographers, and quants to help us transform the data gathered thus far into actionable insights. Bring your skills, questions, and creativity to this data jam!

You can find out more about our challenges on this blog post.

We have a limited amount of scholarship tickets for students, unemployed, or underemployed. You can apply for a scholarship ticket or volunteer to work the event via this form. If selected, we will inform you two weeks prior to the event.

At the event, we will have professional sitters from Sitters Studio providing care for our youngest participants. We can accommodate, newborns, infants, toddlers, and up. Our venue will be a child-friendly environment. If you are interested in bringing a child and have them jam with you, you can do that too.

Support for this event is provided by the Mayor's Office of Technology + Innovation, NYC Open Data, our host Civic Hall, Microsoft Civic, and CartoDB.

This data jam is part of a national day for civic action. For more information, check out the National Day of Civic Hacking.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Each year, Go Green! Greenpoint! has grown in participating organizations and businesses, and in attendance. Our event includes education with schools, community groups, and companies displaying research, science, and art projects that enhance our appreciation and understanding of our environment.

Go Green! offers Greencycle Swap to recycle and reuse clothing, shoes, books, toys, and more. The event hosts a green school contest, yoga, zumba, and other classes, vendors with enviro-friendly merchandise, and live music and dance performances.

As part of Garden Days at Fort Tryon Park, join public garden designer Ronda M. Brands for a behind-the-scenes look at the design and planting scheme of the three-acre Heather Garden with its 500 varieties of plants, trees, and shrubs.

Brands and colleague Lynden Miller have served as garden consultants to the Fort Tryon Park Trust since 2009. Learn how they worked with the park's gardeners and the Olmsted Brother's original 1935 plant list to strengthen and rejuvenate the Heather Garden to make it a destination with horticultural interest in every season. Their Framework Plan also equipped the Fort Tryon Park Trust and NYC Parks gardeners with information on how to best sustain the garden for future generations.
