El Dorado (meaning “The Golden” in English) is an art installation that pays tribute to the 49% of New Yorker households that speak a language other than English. This installation consists of 100 colored “guagua (infant)” sculptures, 49 of them painted gold to reflect the 49% New Yorkers, presented as a contemporary archeological site. It also pays tribute to Lewis H. Latimer’s contribution to electrical light by adding a glowing-in-the-dark element in the guaguas.

The installation will be on view till October 14, 2018.

A Collective Utterance is a solo exhibition of photographs by the artist Naima Green, presenting a selection of images culled from her ongoing series “Jewels from The Hinterland” (2013–present). With black and brown artists, writers, culture workers, and thinkers positioned centrally in each image, the exhibition spans green spaces throughout New York City—such as Riverside Park, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Central Park—as well as select sites across the United States.

With each photograph, Green offers a statement of quietude, solace, insistence, and strength, making visible a community purportedly relegated to the margins, yet who critically inform dominant tastes and trends. These gentle, nuanced compositions are particularly urgent within the context of seemingly interminable sociopolitical crisis, where black and brown bodies are continually imaged as sites of violence and trauma. Within the framework of A Collective Utterance, each individual is left to be—in all of their tenderness, complexities, and intricacies.

A Collective Utterance is organized by Oluremi C. Onabanjo.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

Join Naima Green and curator Oluremi C. Onabanjo in a disucssion about the Arsenal Gallery exhibition A Collective Utterance.

About the Exhibition

Onabanjo.

The Bronx is both a place and a collection of metaphors, a peninsula attached to the mainland in a city of islands. In many ways, it is defined by its diversities—social, demographic, geographic and temporal. Hospitals, museums, universities, formal gardens, beaches, parks, and historical sites are prominent features of the landscape. Massive public housing developments, neighborhoods of six-story apartment buildings and private homes, and bucolic landscapes surrounding long-standing estates can be found within the borders of the Bronx.

The photographers represented in this exhibit are connected to the Bronx by birth, residency, work, or affinity. Each has a unique history, a particular point of view, and an evolving personal story. Who we are as individuals and as a group is represented in this exhibit. We are creating a photographic archive of the Bronx. The Bronx Photographers Collaborative hopes these images speak to, inform, provoke, and inspire you to join us in documenting, celebrating, and advocating for the borough that means so much to us and has contributed so much to who we are.

Partnerships Academy Workshops
Partnerships for Parks (PfP) invites you to join us at one of our many free and open to the public workshops offered year-round! They are a great way to meet, network, and learn the skills needed to get involved with, build, or sustain your park group.

Upcoming Workshop: How Are Parks Built? The NYC Parks Capital Process

Have you ever wondered how local parks are renovated and redesigned? How an outdated park can be transformed with fresh ideas and infrastructure?

Large scale improvements to parks, playgrounds, and greenways are happening all across New York City as part of the NYC Parks capital process; in fact, from sports field renovation to boardwalk resiliency, there are over 600 capital projects underway at this very moment.

Come to this workshop to learn:

  • The basics of how NYC Parks funds, designs, and constructs the parks we love and enjoy
  • What qualifies as a capital project, the steps for its completion--including needs assessment, procuring contractors, and construction--and how you can use the Capital Project Tracker to keep track of the timeline
  • And how communities can effectively gather data and ideas to participate in this process and provide input on park design

Featured speakers include:

  • Diane Jackier, Chief of Capital Strategic Initiatives, NYC Parks

Diane is the chief of Capital Strategic Initiatives at NYC Parks. In this role, she oversees division-wide initiatives to improve the quality and efficiency of Parks’ capital process. She also supervises the staff in the quality assurance, data systems, and accessibility units in the Capital Division. Diane has a Master of City Planning, a Master of Science in historic preservation, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania.

  • Krystyna Soljan, Community Visioning & Planning Manager, Partnerships for Parks

As the Community Visioning & Planning manager at Partnerships for Parks, Krystyna Soljan helps community park groups gather necessary data to support their advocacy campaigns for capital improvements in local parks. Previously, she provided technical assistance and support to worker-owned cooperative businesses across NYC, and to neighborhood leaders in Newark, NJ.

  • Evan Venegas, Group Leader, Friends of Rosemary's Playground

Queens native Evan Venegas helped found Friends of Rosemary's Playground in 2014, with other parents from the Ridgewood neighborhood. Motivated by safety concerns and a lack of green space, Evan helped build relationships between the community, elected officials, and NYC Parks. Through this advocacy work, the group has secured funds for a capital project to renovate the playground and re-imagine how great their park can be.
