Dapper Koala Buster Moon presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. An eternal optimist, and a bit of a scoundrel, he loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it. Facing the crumbling of his life's ambition, he takes one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world's greatest singing competition. Five contestants emerge: a mouse, a timid elephant, a pig, a gorilla and a punk-rock porcupine.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market is opening for its ninth season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market has engaged hundreds of local youths, distributed over 10 tons of fresh food, recycled 24 tons of organic waste via its market compost dropoff operation, hosted 240 community market sessions, delivered 550 cooking demonstrations, 16 bread baking workshops and more in its eight seasons of operation.

Sunday market reopens for a fifth season July 30, 2017 on the farm, with a series of healing events which highlight the value of herbs and non-invasive healing modalities for humans. This free event is a chance to explore normally closed areas of Freshkills Park and enjoy the unique landscape and spectacular views the landfill-to-park project has to offer! Over 700 acres and eight miles of trails will be open for a day of photography, bicycling, activities, and tours.

The event will include:

  • Guided tours
  • Bicycling on five miles of paved paths. Bring your own bike or rent one for free at the park!
  • Self-guided hiking and photography across eight miles of trails
  • Kite-flying and other family-friendly activities led by NYC Parks
  • Shuttles to and from the event area: one at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, one at parking lots near 350 Wild Avenue, and another at one of the park’s scenic hills.

At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park is almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park to be developed in New York City in over 100 years. It also has a significant history as the site of the Fresh Kills Landfill, which was the largest landfill in the world before closing in 2001. Since then, the landfill has been covered with layers of soil and infrastructure, and the site has become a place for wildlife, recreation, science, education, and art. As the park is built in phases, free tours and events provide early access for learning and exploration opportunities.

Join us for the 33rd Annual Medieval Festival in Fort Tryon Park. This festival brings to life the customs and spirit of the Middle Ages.

Fort Tryon Park is transformed into a medieval market town decorated with bright banners and processional flags. Performers, guests, and festival goers dress in medieval costume. Visitors are greeted by authentic period music, dance, magic, and minstrels, as well as jugglers and jesters. The afternoon is concluded with a thrilling joust between four knights on horseback. Costumed vendors will be on hand to demonstrate and sell a wide variety of medieval crafts as well as food and drink. Experience the culture of a bygone era against the backdrop of the Cloisters museum and the Hudson River during autumn's peak. We invite all ages to join us for this unique experience.

The festival is held in the area surrounding the world famous Cloisters, a magnificent museum of medieval art located in northern Manhattan.

The event is free but Medieval crafts, clothing, etc., and food will be available for purchase.

Please note: There will be no ATM's on site at the festival.

Most areas are wheelchair accessible; however, persons with mobility issues may experience difficulty maneuvering on lawn areas.

About Free Community Rowing
The Community Rows are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. Hallett Nature Sanctuary is the smallest of the park's three woodland landscapes. Closed to the public in 1934, the Hallett Nature Sanctuary remained mostly untouched until 2001, when Central Park Conservancy took up a more comprehensive program of restoration and maintenance. Now, visitors can use the rustic trail to view native plantings that attract birds and other wildlife. Join our guides for this exclusive tour of the Hallett Nature Sanctuary, open to visitors only on Central Park Conservancy guided tours and during limited open hours.

Please note: this event was previously scheduled for September 30, 2017.

Meet, greet, and potluck picnic on September 30 with Riverside Park South artist Samantha Holmes to learn about our newest sculpture on display. Attendees are welcome to bring a snack and a soft drink that they would like to enjoy and share. You are welome to bring a blanket to sit on as well as we will gather under the sculpture.

Hell Gate Cairns, a series of stacked stone pillars, or cairns that stand watch over the western coastline of Riverside Park. By focusing on the forms of natural stone, the piece draws attention to the boulders that line the waterfront, remnants of the great earthmoving projects of the 20th century that cleared the city’s waterways, including the perilous “Hell Gate”. The monument’s placement at the water’s edge recalls these feats of human engineering, while further calling upon the cairns’ symbolism as an ancient sign of treacherous waters. Their verticality as a reflection of the nearby skyline, the Hell Gate Cairns aim to embody the human impulse to imaginative construction – stacking stones first in play, then as architecture.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

To RSVP for tour, please visit on.nyc.gov/gracietour.

Currently, Gracie Mansion is not offering group tours. Every year, the Village Community Boathouse mobilizes its fleet of traditional wooden rowing craft for a circumnavigation of the most famous island in the world.

The Row Around Manhattan (RAM) is a challenging and incredibly scenic 30-mile voyage that begins at our boathouse on the south side of Pier 40, circles Manhattan on the Hudson, East, and Harlem Rivers in a counter-clockwise direction, and ends with a spectacular party back at the boathouse.

The RAM is also our biggest fundraiser of the year; we ask each rower to raise or contribute a minimum of $100.

This year’s RAM will take place on Saturday, October 7 (rain date October 8) with a start time of 6:00 a.m. (crews need to be on hand by 5:30 a.m. at the latest).

Non-members are welcome to join us provided they have sufficient rowing experience or join us for at least three practice rows between now and the event. Non-rowing friends, family, and colleagues are encouraged to support the effort by volunteering at the event or by reserving a one of the four seats in our chase boat for a suggested $250 contribution.

Village Community Boathouse provides free rowing to the public throughout the rowing season from three locations: Pier 40, located in Hudson River Park in Manhattan, Prospect Park Lake in Brooklyn, and Van Cortlandt Park Lake in the Bronx. In addition VCB offers free community boatbuilding in its shop on Pier 40. VCB’s high school rowing and boatbuilding programs teach valuable maritime skills and provide youth with a community built on teamwork. VCB provides free public access to the waterways of New York City, promotes environmental stewardship of the harbor and estuary, revives the arts of small-boat seamanship and boatbuilding, and fosters a tradition of maritime hospitality and fellowship. Every year VCB introduces hundreds of New Yorkers and visitors young and old to the joys of rowing.

Registration

  • You must be 18 years old or older to participate in the row.
  • You must be an experienced rower and in reasonable physical condition. We row with the tide and take long breaks, so you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete.
  • Those wishing to choose their own crews may do so with the understanding that we may at some point ask people to switch boats to balance crew strengths.

As soon as you have raised at least $100 (see Fundraising below) email us at RAM@vcb.nyc or at ROW@vcb.nyc, or call Rob Buchanan at (917) 656-7285 to register.

Fundraising
To set up your fundraising page, click on "Join the Team" button on the fundrasing website.

The minimum amount you must raise to participate in the Row Around Manhattan is $100, but many people raise much more than that. We recommend setting a goal of at least $300. You might be surprised by how much you can raise with the right tools and a bit of effort.

VCB is here to support you and help you reach your fundraising goals. We provide fundraiser tip sheets, email support, and more. As a fundraiser for the Row Around Manhattan you are a champion of powerful, community-based rowing and boatbuilding. VCB is committed to helping you reach your goal.
