An exhibition of site-specific artworks by Andrea Arroyo will be on view at Maggie’s Garden and Friendship Garden in Harlem, through October 31, 2017.

“Women with Wings” will feature a series of artworks inspired by the women of New York, including the historical and contemporary women who make Uptown Manhattan a diverse and vibrant community. Each piece, executed in mixed media and repurposed materials, is integrated within the natural environment of plants, grass and other elements of each garden. “Women with Wings” creates a multi-level conversation bridging local culture, nature and history that connects the past and the present.

Artworks include “Maggie’s Pearls of Wisdom”, a piece executed in acrylic, repurposed materials and beads, integrated with a Magnolia tree and inspired by the legacy of Maggie Burnett, beloved Harlem resident and founder of Maggie’s Garden, and “Women in Movement” a piece featuring multiple women silhouettes on multiple wheels hanging from light posts inside the garden.

The Socrates season always goes out with a BANG with our Halloween Harvest Festival! Join us for spooky costume- and art-making with Socrates artists, fantastical face-painting with Agostino Arts, and add your mementos and relics to ancestral altars set up throughout the landscape. Urban Shaman Mama Donna will be offering harvest animal blessings for your pets, and if your pooch is in costume you can participate in a Socrates tradition – our annual Dog Costume Contest with fun prizes and local judges, including Château le Woof! Todos están bienvenidos a participar en este festival inspirado por el Dia de los Muertos, una celebración Mexicana que honora los muertos.

Step back in time to 1865, when family patriarch Seabury Tredwell died at home in his second floor bedroom. Poignant scenes of death and grief recreated in the house will explore mid-19th century mourning customs. Pay your last respects at his deathbed upstairs, or join the mourning in the double parlor, hung with black crepe and set for a mid-19th century funeral. And stage your own “postmortem” photograph in our 19th century coffin. Then share with your friends on Instagram and Twitter. #mhmcoffin2017

Also on exhibit, Tredwell family photographs and mourning attire and accessories, including jewelry made of hair and jet, a black net veil, several bodices and shawls, and two 1870s mourning gowns.

Included with regular admission; reservations not required.

Please note: This exhibit is on view from noon to 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays and from noon to 5:00 p.m. on Fridays through Mondays, from October 5 through October 30.

Sydney Valerio will read poetry from her one-woman show Matters, from the Mujeres, the Magic, the Movement and the Muse anthology and from her MFA coursework.

Each project contributes to her development as a poet concerned with documenting environmental, cultural, and social factors that shape her perspective. Her one-woman show zooms into her identity as a Bronx child, the by-product of the Dominican countryside. Work from the anthology explores the sources of strength found in the spiritual and natural worlds; her MFA coursework creates the foundation for what she’s working on next.

This program concludes with a Q&A facilitated by Bronx Writers Center Director Charlie Vázquez.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market is opening for its ninth season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market has engaged hundreds of local youths, distributed over 10 tons of fresh food, recycled 24 tons of organic waste via its market compost dropoff operation, hosted 240 community market sessions, delivered 550 cooking demonstrations, 16 bread baking workshops and more in its eight seasons of operation.

Sunday market reopens for a fifth season July 30, 2017 on the farm, with a series of healing events which highlight the value of herbs and non-invasive healing modalities for humans.

Join the Village Community Boathouse for Community Rowing in traditional Whitehall gigs, captained by experienced New York Harbor coxswains. The Village Community Boathouse offers free community rowing on Sundays at noon and on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., through November 12, 2017.

Community rowing is free and open to all; no experience or reservations necessary, and lifejackets will be provided. Children (under 18) must be accompanied by a parent. For every rower under 12 one parent or adult guardian must be present. All participants must sign a liability waiver.

Please note: You must arrive at noon, as the Village Community Boathouse pair their boats, coxswains, and rowers by 12:30. Boats leave right after for the afternoon. Please check the Villiage Community Boathouse's social media feeds on Facebook or Twitter for possible last-minute changes due to weather or other circumstances. Or, call (212) 229-2059.

About Free Community Rowing
The Community Rows are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. Visit the Village Community Boathouse's website for more information and photos!

About Village Community Boathouse
Village Community Boathouse is a 501(c)(3) non-profit run by volunteers, based on the south side of Pier 40 on the Hudson River. While our community rowing programs are free, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. Your donations make our program possible.

*Pumpkin Flotilla Guidelines:

Get a pumpkin: Bring a pumpkin that weighs about 8 pounds after it’s carved – that’s approximately the size of a soccer ball. Mini or extra-large pumpkins cannot be accepted for the flotilla.

Get creative: All pumpkins must come with tops and be gutted and carved at home. Jack-o’-lanterns with artificial decorations, such as paint, glitter, marker, food dye, paper, plastic, light bulbs, candles, or floats cannot be accepted for the flotilla. A light and floating device will be provided when you register your jack-o’-lantern at the event.

Drop off your pumpkin: We will have a designated drop-off area near the Dana Discovery Center between 4:00 pm and 5:45 pm. Space in the flotilla is limited to 50 pumpkins and is first come, first served. Please make sure your creation meets all the requirements.

MEMBERS-ONLY PERK
pre-register online to reserve space in the flotilla for your pumpkin by Friday, October 27. Please note: Only one pumpkin per household and please bring your membership card.

Watch the Harlem Meer get spooky! Once the activities are finished at twilight (about 6:30 pm), find a spot along the edge of the Harlem Meer and watch as the jack-o’-lanterns float by in New York’s largest pumpkin flotilla!

Please note: Pumpkins in our flotilla cannot be returned. Thank you for your contribution to our event.

Join us for a tour of the home of Rufus King, signer of the United States Constitution and early voice in the anti-slavery movement.

Originally constructed in the 1750s, King lived here from 1805 until his death in 1827. Executive Director of the King Manor Museum Nadezhda Allen will lead a behind-the-scenes tour, covering the entire house from top to bottom. You'll get to go into the attic and the basement and from the servants’ quarters to the King family’s parlor.

Explore how the house, a designated New York City Individual and Interior Landmark, tells its history of three major phases of construction (c.1750, c.1790, and 1810) and still holds a few mysteries.

Call (718) 206-0545 or visit Eventbrite to reserve your spot today! Don't miss this once-a-year chance to see all the secrets of King Manor!

A century after US entry into World War I, the exhibit Over Here features 39 of the 102 World War Memorials in New York City’s Parks. Through the use of 94 vintage and contemporary photographs, as well as original renderings, and objects, the show conveys the losses that communities throughout the city experienced and the artistic response. The show also references how parks were used for the war effort.

Highlights include images of sculptor Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, an original rendering of Father Duffy in Times Square, and the bronze maquette for the Woodside Doughboy.

This exhibition is free and open to the public. Closed on Holidays. For more information, please call (212) 360-8163.
