Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Don't miss this amazing opportunity to discover a new discipline and find balance and relaxation in our beautiful park! Join our neighbors from the Taoist Tai Chi Society for an introductory practice of the different moves included in the basic Tai Chi set. Tai Chi is learned by doing: the instructor will demonstrate, then perform the moves with the class, and finally watch the students as they repeat them. Movements are believed to help calm the emotions, focus the mind, and strengthen the immune system.

People of all ages and conditions can learn.

RSVP here!

In the event of rain, Tai Chi will be moved into the 14th Street passage, on the High Line at 14th Street.

The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic "Puss in Boots" tale, with a twist. Once upon a time there lived a young man named Ferguson Mundingle. Fergus has just the bare essentials in life - a roof over his head, the clothes on his back, and his ever faithful pet cat. One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York. The installation consists of previously and newly acquired works, all from the original Gracie Mansion period, which have been curated to create a more historically accurate picture of life in New York City during the time of Gracie Mansion’s construction.

Join Wave Hill’s Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions.

In the main gallery, (Not So) Still Life presents novel ways that contemporary artists are transforming the still-life genre to engage with current culture. As a subject, the still life has remained popular since the early Renaissance, featuring compositions of natural and inanimate objects often presented with allegorical connotations. Today, artists are creating new variations by working in photography and sculpture to conflate interior space with landscape, or by using video and animation to convey still life in motion. Artists include Adam Brent, Elizabeth Bryant, Nicole Cohen, Ori Gersht, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Sue Johnson, Laura Letinsky, Beth Lipman, Erin O’Keefe,Donna Sharrett, Nicolas Touron, Michael Vahrenwald, Rodrigo Valenzuela, and Alex Verhaest. In the Sunroom Project Space, art collective Dark Matters (Aimée Burg, Frank De León-Jones and Anna Ritsch) create an interactive site for contemplating the invisible energy that fills the universe. Visitors may concoct their own wishes using materials available at stations throughout the space.

This tour is free with admission to the grounds.

To RSVP for tour, please visit on.nyc.gov/gracietour.

Currently, Gracie Mansion is not offering group tours. If you are part of a private organization that would like to tour the house, please email your request, including the size of group, your name and the purpose of a tour, to gracieinfo@cityhall.nyc.gov and we will work to add you to one of the currently scheduled tours.

Join us at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for South African artist Lionel Smit's public art installation Morphous.

Morphous, a bronze sculpture, is an exploration of hybrid identity and its ever-changing nature within South Africa’s social landscape. This particular piece evokes a question of time, of past and future, and the balance point at which the artist's country finds itself as it embarks on its next chapter. The “double-vision” depicted is a foretelling and an acknowledgement of what has already passed, a societal commentary without judgment.

This installation is presented by Cynthia-Reeves, in collaboration with NYC Parks, the Union Square Partnership, and Art Miami / Art New York. Morphous will be on view through April 30, 2017. This will be the artist’s first public art installation in the United States, it will be complemented by an exhibition of his work at Cynthia-Reeves’ gallery venue on the campus of MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts from July through August, 2016.
